Beloved in Christ, We enjoyed a wonderful visit from Sayidna Joseph last week, for the Feast of the Annunciation and for the Second Sunday of Lent. He also expressed to me how much he enjoyed being back with us. Congratulations to Fr. Andrew Andrews! His Eminence awarded him the dignity of wearing the Epigonation (the rhombus-shaped vestment that hangs on the priest’s right thigh—which you can see Fr. Nabil holding, as he presents Fr. Andrew to the Metropolitan). It designates that Father Andrew now has permission to hear confessions and to give spiritual advice and absolution. Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O Mighty One, in thy comeliness and thy beauty, and proceed prosperously, and be king because of truth and meekness and righteousness, and thy right hand shall guide thee wondrously, always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. (Prayer said when a presbyter or bishop puts on the epigonation.) Axios!, Father Andrew and Kh. Ruth. God grant you Many Years! His Eminence also ordained Seraphim Keshishian to be a subdeacon. His rank as a subdeacon is indicated by his wearing an orarion (long sash) around the waist and crossed over the shoulders, front and back. The subdeacon’s role is to be a general assistant to the deacons in the service, including washing the celebrants’ hands, carrying the trikirion and dikirion candles, etc. The subdiaconate is known as one of the “minor orders,” major orders being deacon, presbyter (priest) and bishop. Subdeacon Seraphim is now studying in the St. Stephen’s Course of the Antiochian House of Studies. As Sayidna noted, we look forward to him serving in a higher order in the future. Axios!, Subdeacon Seraphim and Andromachi Keshishian. God grant you Many Years! On Saturday, April 3 We will celebrate the monthly Liturgy in Arabic, including the Commemoration of All the Departed (Souls Saturday). Matins will begin at 9:15 am; Liturgy will follow at 10:30 am. You are invited to bring Koliva and a list of the names of the departed to be remembered. On Sunday, April 4 On the third Sunday of Lent in the Holy Orthodox Church, we, the faithful, venerate the precious and life-giving Cross of our Lord, God, and Savior, Jesus Christ. This third Sunday marks the midpoint of the Great Fast, which serves as a reminder of what we are anticipating: the crucifixion and death, but more importantly, the Resurrection of Christ. The Cross of Christ is our strength and our hope and serves as a weapon against the evil one, who is constantly throwing darts of evil thoughts and temptations against us, attempting to make us fall. It is through the veneration of the Holy Cross that we who are tired from fasting and long hours of prayer are given a second wind and are able to complete the race and proclaim Christ’s victory over death. With love and blessings in Christ, +Fr.
