The female superior of a community of nuns appointed by a bishop; Mother Superior. She has general authority over her community and nunnery under the supervision of a bishop. Abbot. (from Aram. abba , father; Gr. Hegoumenos , Sl. Nastoyatel ). The head of a monastic community or monastery, appointed by a bishop or elected by the members of the community. He has ordinary jurisdiction and authority over his monastery, serving in particular as spiritual father and guiding the members of his community. Abstinence. (Gr. Nisteia ). A penitential practice consisting of voluntary deprivation of certain foods for religious reasons. In the Orthodox Church, days of abstinence are observed on Wednesdays and Fridays, or other specific periods, such as the Great Lent (see fasting). Acolyte. The follower of a priest; a person assisting the priest in church ceremonies or services. In the early Church, the acolytes were adults; today, however, his duties are performed by children (altar boys). Aër. (Sl. Vozdukh ). The largest of the three veils used for covering the paten and the chalice during or after the Eucharist. It represents the shroud of Christ. When the creed is read, the priest shakes it over the chalice, symbolizing the descent of the Holy Spirit. Affinity. (Gr. Syngeneia ). The spiritual relationship existing between an individual and his spouse’s relatives, or most especially between godparents and godchildren. The Orthodox Church considers affinity an impediment to marriage. -

On June 20th, our first parish meeting was held in the Family Center. There were some 55 people in attendance. To prepare for the parish meeting a survey was posted on the parish website and available for parishioners to answer. Some submitted an available paper survey. The results are posted on the parish web site and will remain available for anyone to consult throughout the year. Some 58 persons answered the survey. The results ran to some 50+ pages. A synthesis of the material will be posted on the website soon. However, I urge everyone to read the survey responses. All of the responses were well thought out and cogently expressed. There seems to be a remark- able consensus on many mattes and a thoughtful disagreement on others. At the parish meeting, fortunately, it turns out; I was not able to present a synthesis of the survey because I could not hook up my laptop to the projector. As a happy consequence the conversation among the participants begins right away, based upon what they wanted to express and not as a response to my presentation. The conversation was spirited and fruitful. Participants focused on three overriding issues: faith formation, stabilizing our financial situation, and outreach in general but particularly to youth and young adults. A variety of views were expressed and differences were very respectfully express and received. -

Photo by Alessia Pierdomenico/Reuters One-hundred-fifteen Roman Catholic cardinals locked themselves up in the Vatican today to select the church’s next pope. In pictures of the cardinals, they were shown wearing a variety of unusual hats. How do cardinals choose their hats? To suit the occasion, to represent their homeland, or, sometimes, to make a personal statement. Cardinals primarily wear one of three different types. The most basic hat is a skullcap called the zucchetto (pl. zucchetti), which is a simple round hat that looks like a beanie or yarmulke. Next is the collapsible biretta, a taller, square-ridged cap with three peaks on top. There are certain times when it’s customary to put on the biretta, such as when entering and leaving church for Mass, but it’s often just personal preference. Cardinals wear both of these hats in red, which symbolizes how each cardinal should be willing to spill his blood for the church. (The zucchetto is actually worn beneath the biretta.) Some cardinals also wear regional variations on the hat, such as the Spanish style, which features four peaks instead of three. On special occasions, such as when preparing to elect the next leader of their church, they may also wear a mitre, which is a tall and usually white pointed hat. The mitre is the same style of cap commonly worn by the pope, and it comes in three different styles with varying degrees of ornamentation, according to the occasion. -

PAIX LITURGIQUE Letter 99 published 14 February 2019 The New Ordinations: An Impoverished Rite Third instalment of our comparative study of the extraordinary and modern Rituals. Fifteen to twenty percent of secular priests are ordained in the traditional rite in France.1 These candidates to the priesthood are those who have chosen the Mass they will celebrate throughout their ministry, and their ordination, whether it takes place in a traditional institute or in certain dioceses, reflects this assignation. Hence they choose to receive holy orders in the liturgical universe to which their Mass will belong; such a choice is theologically and spiritually coherent. It must be said that the ordinary form of the rite of ordination, when compared with the traditional one, has been considerably impoverished. This makes sense, to the extent that, as St. Thomas taught, the priesthood is oriented towards the Mass as towards its end: “Receive the power to offer sacrifice to God and to celebrate Mass for the living as well as for the dead,” says the bishop to the man he has just ordained a priest by giving him a chalice and a paten containing bread and wine. To a Mass that has been ritually and theologically impoverished—especially when it comes to expressing the eucharistic sacrifice—had to correspond an ordination rite that has been impoverished in its signification. Study group 20 of the Commission for the implementation of the Constitution on the Holy Liturgy was put in charge of the sacrament of orders. New books were published: for the ordination of deacons, priests, and bishops, in 1968; for the institution to ministries (which replaced the subdiaconate and minor orders) and admission to the diaconate and priesthood, in 1972.2 Change for the sake of change? Beloved in Christ, We enjoyed a wonderful visit from Sayidna Joseph last week, for the Feast of the Annunciation and for the Second Sunday of Lent. He also expressed to me how much he enjoyed being back with us. Congratulations to Fr. Andrew Andrews! His Eminence awarded him the dignity of wearing the Epigonation (the rhombus-shaped vestment that hangs on the priest’s right thigh—which you can see Fr. Nabil holding, as he presents Fr. Andrew to the Metropolitan). It designates that Father Andrew now has permission to hear confessions and to give spiritual advice and absolution. Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O Mighty One, in thy comeliness and thy beauty, and proceed prosperously, and be king because of truth and meekness and righteousness, and thy right hand shall guide thee wondrously, always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. His rank as a subdeacon is indicated by his wearing an orarion (long sash) around the waist and crossed over the shoulders, front and back. The subdeacon’s role is to be a general assistant to the deacons in the service, including washing the celebrants’ hands, carrying the trikirion and dikirion candles, etc. The subdiaconate is known as one of the “minor orders,” major orders being deacon, presbyter (priest) and bishop. -

Explanation of the Proskomedia of the Divine Liturgy Praise be Jesus Christ! Let’s begin our class by praying to the Holy Spirit for inspiration and understanding. Today we are going to give an explanation of the Proskomedia which is the service of preparation before the actual beginning of the Divine Liturgy. Origin of the Proskomedia The name Proskomedia comes from the Greek word” proskomidzo,” which means “to bring” or” to offer.” In the Roman rite, the Proskomedia is known as the Offertory. The Proskomedia is the cere- mony of offering and bringing the bread and wine to the table of oblation or preparation table called the Prothesiis. Later on, at the consecration of the Liturgy particles of bread will be changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. The origin of the Proskomedia goes back to apostolic times. It was part of the very ancient form of the Divine liturgy, although not in the same arrangement as we know it today. It developed from an old Christian custom of bringing offerings for the celebration of the Liturgy. The oldest liturgical manuscripts about the Proskomedia relates that this was a simple ceremony of bringing bread and wine for offering at the altar. In the eleven century, this simple ceremony grew into an enriched rite of preparation where prayers and symbolic actions were added to commemorate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Holy Mother of God, the saints, the living and the dead. The origin of the commemoration of the living and the dead goes back to the early centuries of Christianity where the Christians of the first century prayed for each other and held their dead brethren, especially their martyrs, in great honor and respect.
