Title: Once Is Not Enough January Wayne, the sheltered, much-loved daughter of a formerly successful Hollywood producer, goes home to New York after a lengthy stint in a Swiss hospital. Mike Wayne has fallen on hard times and decides to marry for money. January is an innocent young woman who searches for her place in the world. Pursued by her rich new stepmother's playboy of a cousin, she instead falls hard for a much older man, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who's a surrogate for her father, before tragedy strikes. Jacqueline Susann's glamorous, emotional, highly personal novels always lost something in their translation to the screen. Once Is Not Enough is another prime example. But it doesn't have the unintended hilarity of Valley of the Dolls, nor the compelling sleaziness of The Love Machine. The most outrageous and memorable elements of the book Once is Not Enough excised completely, and the result is two hours of sudsy romantic nothingness. Without the pills, vitamin shots, wild sex including an acid-fueled orgyand disturbing violence that infused the compelling novel, the story is as flat as week-old ginger ale. It's a slick production with an all-star cast, including the engaging Deborah Raffin as January, but the material is awful.

Image of PR Practitioner in Movies and Television 1901-2011 1 The Image of the Public Relations Practitioner in Movies and Television 1901-2011 Joe Saltzman1 Professor of Journalism Director, The Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) A Project of the Norman Lear Center Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA [email protected] Introduction In this article, we examine images of public relations practitioners in film and television appearing in more than 327 English-speaking films and television programs from 1901 to 2011.2 This is the largest study of its kind ever attempted and one of the first to include the image of the public relations practitioner in television programs. Many public relations practitioners believe the image of the publicist and the PR professional is one of the most negative in history. But this analysis indicates that the images of the PR practitioner are far more varied and even more positive than previously thought. Literature Review There have been previous studies on the image of the PR practitioner in film. They include Karen Miller’s landmark study in 1999 (which included film and print images),3 Larry Tavcar’s 1993 look at 17 films depicting public relations in the movies,4 Donn James Tilson’s brief look at public relations and Hollywood in 2003,5 and Carol Ames’ comprehensive follow-up to Miller’s study in 2010.6 In addition, Mordecai Lee studied images of the public relations practitioner in government and public administration, sampling 20 films from 1944 to 2000 in a 2001 study,7 and in a 2009 update8 added seven more films from 1996 to 2008.

  • The Oxford Dictionary of Modern Quotations.TXT
The Oxford Dictionary of Modern Quotations PREFACE Preface =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- This is a completely new dictionary, containing about 5,000 quotations. What is a "quotation"? It is a saying or piece of writing that strikes people as so true or memorable that they quote it (or allude to it) in speech or writing. Often they will quote it directly, introducing it with a phrase like "As ---- says" but equally often they will assume that the reader or listener already knows the quotation, and they will simply allude to it without mentioning its source (as in the headline "A ros‚ is a ros‚ is a ros‚," referring obliquely to a line by Gertrude Stein). This dictionary has been compiled from extensive evidence of the quotations that are actually used in this way. The dictionary includes the commonest quotations which were found in a collection of more than 200,000 citations assembled by combing books, magazines, and newspapers. For example, our collections contained more than thirty examples each for Edward Heath's "unacceptable face of capitalism" and Marshal McLuhan's "The medium is the message," so both these quotations had to be included. As a result, this book is not--like many quotations dictionaries--a subjective anthology of the editor's favourite quotations, but an objective selection of the quotations which are most widely known and used. Popularity and familiarity are the main criteria for inclusion, although no reader is likely to be familiar with all the quotations in this dictionary. The book can be used for reference or for browsing: to trace the source of a particular quotation or to find an appropriate saying for a special need.

Following her first book, Every Night, Josephine!, in 1964, she became the only writer to have three consecutive Number One bestsellers—Valley of the Dolls, The Love Machine and Once Is Not Enough. Television Recording Origins: Oldest Surviving Live TV Broadcast – R. Shagawat TELEVISION RECORDING – THE ORIGINS AND EARLIEST SURVIVING LIVE TV BROADCAST RECORDINGS By Robert Shagawat E Mail: [email protected] Abstract Of Information as of October 4, 2004 updated October 2010 – April 2011 1947 DuMont RA-103 TV Set Early Kinescope Recording Machine Called the Chatham (or “Doghouse”) model Introduction - Oldest Surviving Record of Live Television Program: What is the earliest surviving live television broadcast recording? It is surprising how little definitive research and solid information is available on this topic. This article seeks to answer this question, based on what we know today. Lack of Prior Research: While there has been a significant amount of research done on the oldest surviving live radio broadcast airchecks (from 1925 or earlier), there is a scarcity of comprehensive research on the earliest live TV transmission recordings that are still in existence. This dearth of information on what remains of the formative years of television was not anticipated, given the vital importance of the TV legacy to the “baby boomers” raised on the media. It is also amazing, given the relatively recent appearance of television during the 20th century (where more documentation of its earliest records would be thought to exist). Historic Means of Capturing Live Television: First of all, we must understand how early TV broadcasts could be captured in the days before videotape and later analog and digital recording methods (as will be further elaborated below). The kinescope recording was filmed from the kinescope or cathode ray tube TV receiver, where these films of live television as taken from the kinescope device were soon themselves just called “kinescopes”.

Gallamore A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2012 ABSTRACT INTRODUCING THE INCOMPARABLE HILDEGARDE: THE SEXUALITY, STYLE, AND IMAGE OF A FORGOTTEN CULTURAL ICON Monica S. Gallamore Marquette University, 2012 This study is an historical biography of the popular American entertainer from the nineteen-forties and fifties named Hildegarde. Known by her first name long before such designations became commonplace, Hildegarde achieved such celebrity status that she influenced women‘s fashions and promoted a number of consumer products. She even had her own signature Revlon lipstick and nail polish called ―Hildegarde Rose.‖ Hildegarde‘s career spanned for more than seventy years, beginning as a pianist for silent movies in Milwaukee and eventually becoming the darling of nightclubs and supper clubs. Unfortunately, few people remember this entertainer or her influence. She has been overlooked by historians as a cultural influence and a groundbreaking performer even though in 1945 she was the most popular songstress in the nation. Hildegarde is unique because she did not fit into the accepted archetype of women during her heyday.
