Title: Once Is Not Enough January Wayne, the sheltered, much-loved daughter of a formerly successful Hollywood producer, goes home to New York after a lengthy stint in a Swiss hospital. Mike Wayne has fallen on hard times and decides to marry for money. January is an innocent young woman who searches for her place in the world. Pursued by her rich new stepmother's playboy of a cousin, she instead falls hard for a much older man, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who's a surrogate for her father, before tragedy strikes. 's glamorous, emotional, highly personal novels always lost something in their translation to the screen. Once Is Not Enough is another prime example. But it doesn't have the unintended hilarity of , nor the compelling sleaziness of . The most outrageous and memorable elements of the book Once is Not Enough excised completely, and the result is two hours of sudsy romantic nothingness. Without the pills, vitamin shots, wild sex including an acid-fueled orgyand disturbing violence that infused the compelling novel, the story is as flat as week-old ginger ale. It's a slick production with an all-star cast, including the engaging Deborah Raffin as January, but the material is awful. The filmmakers' were obviously trying for a "respectable" approach, and the results are just plain boring. Case in point: Jackie provided the book with a surreal, escapist conclusion that's wholly amazing, whereas the movie just The book was about a naive girl trying to deal with life, and the movie is about--say it with me now! And it's like every other mediocre movie on the subject. However, things are brightened by Brenda Vaccaro in her Golden Globe-winning, Oscar- nominated turn as uninhibited magazine editor Linda Riggs. She's the perfect realization of Susann's character albeit with toned-down material and provides a lot more spirit than this tepid production deserves. Her performance alone Once is Not Enough a viewing, but everything else is a daytime-TV-style mess. About as shocking as a trip to the supermarket--perhaps even less so. It was produced by Howard W. Koch and written by Julius J. Mike Once is Not Enough is a middle-aged motion-picture producer whose career has fallen on hard times. Try as he Once is Not Enough, Mike no longer can get a new Hollywood project made. Accustomed to a lavish lifestyle, Mike has pampered his daughter, January, providing her with an expensive education in Europe and everything else money can buy. January worships her father and eagerly returns to America to be with him again. Needing capital, Mike enters into a loveless marriage with Deidre Milford Once is Not Enough, one of the world's wealthiest women. She has already been through multiple Once is Not Enough and demands that things be done her way. She also is secretly carrying on a lesbian affair. January is devastated to learn that Mike is now wed to this rude, arrogant woman. Deidre attempts to draw January into a relationship with her cousin David Milford, a ladies' man who also usually gets his own way. He finally persuades January into going to bed with him, only to discover that she is a virgin. Unsure what to do with her life, January is advised by an old friend, Linda Riggs, now a magazine editor, to author a book. Linda enjoys a free-spirit life with many lovers and urges January to do likewise. But due in no small part to her father complexJanuary instead falls for a much-older Tom Colt, a hard-drinking, impotent novelist who is an adversary of her father's. Mike bitterly resents the affair. He punches Colt upon catching January in a Beverly Hills hotel bungalow with him. Mike orders his daughter to make a choice between them, and Colt gives her the same ultimatum. She chooses her lover. Deidre's demands and insults finally become too much for Mike, who wants a divorce. They amicably agree to one, but their airplane crashes and both are killed. The devastated January turns to Tom Colt for comfort, but he turns against her instead, leaving her to go on alone. When she goes to tell the good news to Linda, she finds Linda angry and distraught for she was just fired from her job after having sex with her boss who used her. Realizing that nothing is perfect in life, not even in her own way, January is left all alone wandering Manhattan after dark, but with hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Despite only 14 seconds of screen time, with just two lines "You dumb drunken broad! Guy Green was hired to direct the film, according to one Paramount executive, because he "might give it class". He also wanted to fire David Janssen during rehearsals and replace him with Robert Shaw. said Kirk Douglas and Janssen directed themselves during the film. The ending was made more hopeful than in the source novel. The novel ends with January trying acid and Once is Not Enough in an orgy. She then wanders onto the beach where she hallucinates that she sees her father and walks into the ocean after him, presumably drowning. From Wikipedia, the free Once is Not Enough. Release date. I once asked a writer friend whether he'd ever contemplated setting aside his literary integrity, writing a Jackie Susann novel, and making millions of dollars. And I think: You can't. Whatever it was that might have occurred during the editorial process, and whatever labors Michael Korda or whoever labored to labor, there is an integrity to this novel that sucks you in and keeps you turning pages. It's an addle-brained, childish integrity, but it's integrity nonetheless. The incredibly overdone incestuous fixation of the heroine, the explicit and yet squeamish sex scenes, the tawdry cultural name-dropping: It's mesmerizing. And at the very end, Susann takes a leap into the transcendent, and I'll be goddamned if she doesn't pull it off. I couldn't possibly have had more fun. View 1 comment. Ah, the days when alcohol was officially one of the major food Once is Not Enough. Normally I love these soap-opera sagas. And I would have enjoyed this ride through Doll-land NYC, but continually controlling my gag reflex over the whole father-daughter lust thing got to be a strain. At least the incest theme in The Love Machine was only hinted at and the character got help. Even the other Once is Not Enough are aware of the incest theme in Once Is Not Enough and yet no one ever points out how sick the father-adult Ah, the days when alcohol was officially one of the major food groups. Even the other characters are aware of the incest theme in Once Is Not Enough and yet no one ever points out how sick the father-adult daughter relationship is nor ever recommends they seek professional help. I kept waiting for this to somehow redeem itself The book earns an extra star because I want to grab someone and discuss the book over coffee despite the fact it drove me up the wall. I didn't like it, but it touched my emotions, and any time an author can make you want to rant about fictitious people, they've done their job. Dec 22, Jessica rated it Once is Not Enough was ok Recommends it for: girls with massive Once is Not Enough complexes who usually only read magazines. Actually, that's incorrect, it was Valley of the Dollsand that book only needed to be written once. Or at least, reading that book once was enough for me. Oh, maybe I just wasn't in the mood this time, I don't know It wasn't bad or anything -- I mean, obviously it was bad, but you get what I'm saying. I just wasn't gripped, and if you can't get into this on a flight to Las Vegas, t Yeah, but it should have been Still, in the weeks since leaving it in the casino hotel room under a pile of blood-stained Kleenex and empty scotch bottles, I have caught myself wondering what happened to the characters, so I guess I wasn't totally unaffected. I might read this someday, if I'm stuck in an LA rehab or something. Maybe it just wasn't the right time View all 8 comments. Sep 17, Dfordoom rated it it was amazing Shelves: trash-fiction. Once is not Enoughpublished inwas the third of her blockbuster bestsellers. Her critics would have said she took it to new depths, but when you can sell 30 million copies of one novel you can afford not to worry too much about the critics. Once is not Enough includes the basic ingredients that had made Valley of the Dolls so successful - a show business background, glamour, Once is Not Enough, sex, drugs, tragedy and self- destructiveness. And it adds a very large helping of kinkiness. The heroine this time is January Wayne, the daughter of a big-time Broadway producer who had tried to repeat his success in Hollywood and come badly unstuck. January is fond of her father. Very fond of him. Very very fond of him. And not in the way year-old women are supposed to be fond of their dads. And this same middle-aged movie star is having a lesbian affair with Dee Milford! January also develops a rather worrying drug habit. Every element that could possibly have outraged mainstream literary critics and self-appointed moral guardians of society Once is Not Enough an appearance at some stage in the outlandish soap-opera plot. She believed in excess, and that excess works best if you have a very large amount of it. Truckloads of it. Part of the success of Valley of the Dolls was due to the fact that Susann knew the world depicted in the novel extremely well, having been an actress on Broadway in the 50s. With Once is not Enough she moves into a s setting, and she was not quite as familiar with the Once is Not Enough of early 70s youth culture. The novel is of course complete trash, but it celebrates its own trashiness. Revel in it.
