“Beware the !”

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Beware the Ides of March!” from

William Shakespeare’s play, Julius . But to what does it 2020 refer? Is that day really an ominous day that we should caution? th Today, “Ides” loosely refers to the middle of the (the 15 ). But in Ancient history, the “month” referred to the lunar cycle – the phases of the March moon. The earliest , believed to have been created by in 753 BC, expressed dates according to three distinct phases: [1] Kalends (where we

get the word “calendar”) referred to the new moon, [2] Nones referred to the first

quarter moon, and [3] Ides referred to the full moon. Each month began with the Kalends, 8 or 9 days after the Ides began, when astronomers established the last sliver of the “old moon” so that the beginning of the new moon began. Nones was declared between the 5th–7th day of the month, and Ides was determined in the middle of the month (13th–15th). The Romulus Calendar began the new year with the month of . On the Ides of Martius (March 15th) the people celebrated the New Year by gathering on the Via Flaminia by the banks of the Tiber River with food, wine, music, and offered sacrifices to Anna Perenn to ensure a good, prosperous year. The calendar contained 10 a year with 304 days: Martius, , , Junius, , , Septembis, Exciting,Noetic, Courageous, Octobis, Novembis, and Decembis. The ancient Obsessive,Righteous, Encouraging Romans ignored the 61 dead days of winter. But, Shakespeare’s line to “Beware!” rings with superstitions galore surrounding the Ides of

March, even though all throughout the centuries, the top ten tragedies include the assassination of in 44 BC, a cyclone in 1889, a deadly blizzard in 1941, and even the cancellation of the Ed Sullivan Show in 1971. We associate the Ides (full moon) itself with witches, werewolves, Hecate, insanity, and any number of phenomena. Let’s face it, we are a people who love to run with superstitions. Praise the Lord, we have a God who supersedes the Ides of March, Friday the 13th, and black cats! We do not have to fear the unknown, because our God knows the unknown and He loves us – providing us protection and comfort! When the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, leads me beside still waters, and restores my soul.
