Uppsala is Sweden’s fourth largest city with a population of 200 000 inhabitants. Unique cultural treasures and an exciting history are to be found in the city of knowledge and inspiration. Uppsala has retained its small-town charm while offering a big city’s selection of shops, restaurants and other entertainment. Uppsala is located 40 minutes north of Stockholm. Uppsala can easily be reached from Arlanda airport. HISTORICAL ATTRACTIONS Uppsala has many historical attractions. Among the most famous are: • Uppsala Cathedral the largest cathedral in Scandinavia. • One of Sweden’s eldest Botanical Gardens • A unique Anatomical Theatre built in the 1600’s • The Linnaeus Garden Linnaeus is one of the most famous Uppsala University professors ever. Linnaeus created the system for classifying and naming nature, and the foundation of his system is still in use today throughout the scientific world. ‘God created the world, and Linnaeus categorised it’ has become an adage. • Uppsala Castle from the mid-1500's Carolina Rediviva – Uppsala University Library from 1620 with the silver bible from 6th century Old Uppsala As early as the 3rd century AD and the 4th century AD and onwards, it was an important religious, economic and political centre. Norrlands nation One of the most integral parts of student life in Uppsala is the student nations. There are thirteen student nations, each dating back to the 17th century. Blåsenhus Conference Place The Conference will take place at Blåsenhus. Blåsenhus, one of the newest campuses within Uppsala University is located in the area with the very same name. You can find Blåsenhus opposite the Uppsala castle. The Blåsenhus area has a historical past that goes back 350 years. Blåsenhus is light, airy and with many areas for the students to study. The goal of this two-day event is to gather researchers, stimulate discussion and scholarly exchange about one of the fundamental aspects of social relationships, namely connection. For over the past two decades or so digital networks became increasingly embedded in the everyday life and subsequently transformed many aspects of social living – from intimate and private relations through collective action to industries and social structures. At the same time, the goal of this event is to tackle the idea and question of disconnection – a multifaceted concept which has gained public and scholarly attention in recent years. As already noted in our call for abstracts, the purpose of this symposium is to stimulate the discussion on the gains, costs and possibilities of ethical life in the culture of hyperconnectivity. The aim is thus also to address both positive and negative aspects of dis/connected living and to better understand how it can possibly give rise to and facilitate social inclusion and meaningful societal exchange. The symposium programme consists of international and local researchers and promises intellectually stimulating time and great opportunity for networking, new partnerships and friendships. This event will take place at Campus Engelska Parken (The English Campus) and the University Main Building (Universitetshuset) and is arranged by the Cultural Matters Group with support from Uppsala Forum on Democracy, Peace and Justice at Uppsala University.

    Joseph M. Gonzalez 6 Fashioning Death: Clothing, Memory and Identity in 16th Century Swedish Funerary Practice Introduction King Gustav Vasa was married three times. In 1531, less than a decade after his election as King of Sweden, he made a match calculated to boost his prestige and help consolidate his position as king and married Katarina von Sax-Lauenburg, the daughter of Duke Magnus and a relative of the emperor. She bore the king one son, Erik, and died suddenly in 1535 (Svalenius, 1992). After her death, the king married the daughter of one of the most powerful noble houses in Sweden, Margareta Eriksdotter Leijonhufvud in 1536. Queen Margareta bore the king eight children before she died in 1551. By August of 1552, the fifty-six year old Gustav Vasa had found a new queen, the 16-year-old Katarina Gustavsdotter Stenbock, daughter of another of Sweden’s leading noble houses. Despite the youth of his bride, the marriage bore no children and the old king died eight years later (Svalenius, 1992). The king’s death occasioned a funeral of unprecedented magnificence that was unique both in its scale and in its promotion of the Vasa dynasty’s image and interests. Unique to Vasa’s funeral was the literal incorporation of the bodies of his two deceased wives in the ceremony. They shared his bed-like hearse on the long road to Uppsala and the single copper casket that was interred in the cathedral crypt. Six months after the funeral, Gustav Vasa’s son with Katarina von Sax-Lauenburg, Erik, was crowned king.

    Creating Holy People and People Places Holy on theCreating Periphery Creating Holy People and Places on the Periphery A Study of the Emergence of Cults of Native Saints in the Ecclesiastical Provinces of Lund and Uppsala from the Eleventh to the Thirteenth Centuries During the medieval period, the introduction of a new belief system brought profound societal change to Scandinavia. One of the elements of this new religion was the cult of saints. This thesis examines the emergence of new cults of saints native to the region that became the ecclesiastical provinces of Lund and Uppsala in the twelfth century. The study examines theearliest, extant evidence for these cults, in particular that found in liturgical fragments. By analyzing and then comparing the relationship that each native saint’s cult had to the Christianization, the study reveals a mutually beneficial bond between these cults and a newly emerging Christian society.
