Whether driving a car or performing an important ceremonial task , whether building a house or going to the district hospital , in all kinds of daily activities, Samoans know that they could count on the sympathetic company of one or more tapua ' i. Right after avoiding a big hole in the muddy road , the driver would receive the deserved recognition from the passengers . Malo! they would say . Malo fo' i! the driver would answer. One malo would recognize the driver's skills , the other malo would acknowledge the supporters ' sympathy and appreciation . For Samoans , in fact, there is almost no difference between the one who performs a certain task and those who are with him as his supporters . The most skilled speechmaker knows that , at the end of his speech, he will have to share his prize with his tapua ' i. Sometimes a tapua ' i might gain even more than the one who was per forming the task . If the performance went well , in the Samoan view, it is the tapua ' I 's merit as much as it is the performer's. In the writing of this monograph and , much before then, in my fieldwork experience, I had the advantage of having always next to me many tapua 'i, ready to cheer me up or make me feel accomplished. At the end of a difficult negotiation , in the middle of a challenging translation, at the beginning of a new chapter, my tapua ' i always knew when the time had corne for a ma lo! These acknowledgments are my late , but sincere ma lo fo' i! to them . The research on which this study is based was conducted in the village of Falefa , on the island of Upolu, in Western Samoa. I was part of a reserach group from the University of Southern California also comprising Elinor Ochs and Martha Platt . Many people in the village helped us in many different ways and made our work and our participation in the village life possible . In particular, I would vii viii like to thank Rev Fa ' atau 'oloa Mauala and his wife Sauiluma , who accepted our research group as part of their extended family and helped us throughout our whole stay (July 1978 - July 1979) . I learned a great deal about Samoan language and culture from several chiefs and orators in Falefa . In particular, I wish to thank 'Alo Eti , Iuli Sefo, Lua Veni , Savea Savelio, TavQ Utulei , and Tula 'i Tino . They all very generously shared with me much of their knowledge and experience of the fa 'aSamoa . Without their help and patience, I could have never made sense out of the. fono speeches I recorded. I must also thank the younger people who helped me with the tapes of more casual interaction .

They have figured prominently in discussions of Polynesian set- tlement from Thilenius (1902), Churchill (1911), and Rivers (1914) to Bayard (1976) and Kirch and Yen (1982). Scattered strategically through territory generally regarded as either Melanesian or Microne- sian, they illustrate to varying degrees a merging of elements from the three great Oceanic culture areas—thus potentially illuminating pro- cesses of cultural diffusion. And as small bits of land, remote from urban and administrative centers, they have only relatively recently experienced the sustained European contact that many decades earlier wreaked havoc with most islands of the “Polynesian Triangle.” The last of these characteristics has made the outliers particularly attractive to scholars interested in glimpsing Polynesian cultures and societies that have been but minimally influenced by Western ideas and Pacific Studies, Vol. 9, No. 3—July 1986 1 2 Pacific Studies, Vol. 9, No. 3—July 1986 accoutrements. For example, Tikopia and Anuta in the eastern Solo- mons are exceptional in having maintained their traditional social structures, including their hereditary chieftainships, almost entirely intact. And Papua New Guinea’s three Polynesian outliers—Nukuria, Nukumanu, and Takuu—may be the only Polynesian islands that still systematically prohibit Christian missionary activities while proudly maintaining important elements of their old religions.

    Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-02639-1 - The Anthropology of Intentions: Language in a World of Others Alessandro Duranti Excerpt More information 1 Rethinking anti-intentionalism 1.0 Introduction In this book I revisit the anthropological critique of analytic philosophers’ theories of meaning and action based on speakers’ intentions. On the basis of the empirical investigation of oral communication, face-to-face interaction, and written texts, I argue that both anthropologists and analytic philosophers overstated their case and that the salience of intentions cannot be decided once and for all because it actually varies across cultural contexts. As we will see, in some cases speakers avoid any kind of discourse about intentions, focusing on the consequences of actions rather than on their alleged original goals. But in other cases, speculation about intentions is present even in societies where people have been said to avoid reading the mind of others. My goal is to support an ethnographic and interactional perspective on intentions as cognitive, emotional, and embodied dispositions always embedded in an intersubjective world of experience. To provide such a perspective, I review previous arguments made by linguistic anthropologists and return to some of the fundamental concepts and claims of speech act theory as elaborated by John Searle over the last half century. In addition to relying on the data from three research projects – one in Samoa and two in the US – I also draw from a number of theoretical perspectives, including Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology, in which both intentionality and intersubjectivity play a key role. The transcripts and written texts I analyze in some detail in the chapters to follow will demonstrate that language – broadly defined – is a great resource for us to understand how particular speakers conceptualize, perform, and understand social action.

The Samoan island chain dominated by a mixture of shield and post-erosional volcanism activities. The closed basin structures of volcanoes such as the Crater Lake Lanoto enable the entrapment and retention of a near-complete sedimentary record, itself recording its eruptive history. Crater Lanoto is characterised as a compound monogenetic and short-term volcano. A high proportion of primary tephra components were found in a core extracted from Crater Lake Lanoto show that Crater Lanoto erupted four times (tephra bed-1, 2, 3, and 4).

    The I and the We: Individuality, Collectivity, and Samoan Artistic Responses to Cultural Change April K Henderson That the Samoan sense of self is relational, based on socio-spatial rela- tionships within larger collectives, is something of a truism—a statement of such obvious apparent truth that it is taken as a given. Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Taisi Efi, a former prime minister and current head of state of independent Sāmoa as well as an influential intellectual and essayist, has explained this Samoan relational identity: “I am not an individual; I am an integral part of the cosmos. I share divinity with my ancestors, the land, the seas and the skies. I am not an individual, because I share a ‘tofi’ (an inheritance) with my family, my village and my nation. I belong to my family and my family belongs to me. I belong to my village and my village belongs to me. I belong to my nation and my nation belongs to me. This is the essence of my sense of belonging” (Tui Atua 2003, 51). Elaborations of this relational self are consistent across the different political and geographical entities that Samoans currently inhabit. Par- ticipants in an Aotearoa/New Zealand–based project gathering Samoan perspectives on mental health similarly described “the Samoan self . as having meaning only in relationship with other people, not as an individ- ual. This self could not be separated from the ‘va’ or relational space that occurs between an individual and parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other extended family and community members” (Tamasese and others 2005, 303).

It provides a snapshot of the information collected from the Population Questionnaire and some highlights of the Housing Questionnaire. It also provides the final count of the population of Samoa in November 7th 2016 by statistical regions, political districts and villages. Over the past censuses, the Samoa Bureau of Statistics has compiled a standard analytical report that users and mainly students find it complex and too technical for their purposes. We have changed our approach in the 2016 census by compiling smaller reports (Census Brief reports) to be released on a quarterly basis with emphasis on different areas of Samoa’s development as well as demands from users. In doing that, we look forward to working more collaboratively with our stakeholders and technical partners in compiling relevant, focused and more user friendly statistical brief reports for planning, policy-making and program interventions. At the same time, the Bureau is giving the public the opportunity to select their own data of interest from the census database for printing rather than the Bureau printing numerous tabulations which mostly remain unused.
