The Lego video game series is financially successful outselling traditionally produced licensed video games. The Lego series also receives critical acclaim from both gaming magazine reviews and user reviews. By conducting both an industrial and audience address study, this project displays how texts that begin as promotional products for Hollywood movies and a toy line can grow into their own franchise of releases that stills bolster the original work.

    The Ambiguous Captain Jack Sparrow: Destabilizing Gender, Politics and Religion in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean Dr. Jennifer E. Porter (Memorial University) [email protected] ABSTRACT: Scholars have argued that Disney films reflect a nostalgia for a white, colonial, male-oriented Christian past and an uncritical acceptance of overtly consumerist culture. This article examines these academic criticisms of Disney through the lens of Disney’s film trilogy Pirates of the Caribbean. The paper argues that Disney’s Pirates films destabilize traditional models of gender, politics and religion through the figure of Captain Jack Sparrow. Exploring Jack as a Trickster figure highlights dichotomies such as good and evil, life and death, male and female, human and divine, democracy and imperialism, and points to a broader trend within these Disney films to problematize accepted categories. As a result, the article suggests that Disney’s ideological “message” is much more nuanced in these films than academic critics give Disney credit for. [1] Pirates of the Caribbean debuted as a “dark ride” at Disneyland in 1967; modeled on imagineer Marc Davis’ sketches, it was the last ride to be conceived and built while Walt Disney himself was alive, and opened to the public three months after his death.i The ride consists of a series of vignettes, showing audio-animatronic pirates, both living and dead, indulging in various piratical pursuits.     ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. The film won the festival’s coveted Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for a drama, and was acquired by The Weinstein Company soon after its premiere screening. Providing end-to-end services for the Super 16 mm project, FotoKem and SPY worked closely with the filmmakers from start to finish. Fruitvale was processed and transferred at FotoKem in Burbank. The files were delivered to SPY’s headquarters in San Francisco, where colorist Chris Martin color graded the film with Coogler and Morrison. The two facilities are securely connected by a high-speed network offering real-time interface capabilities between the locations to provide the creative community with easy access to the full breadth of post- production services that FotoKem and its companies offer. Fruitvale follows the final day of 22-year old Oscar Grant, who was gunned down by a police officer at the Fruitvale stop of an Oakland transit line. The tragedy was caught on video, and the incident made national headlines. The movie was shot on location in San Francisco. The Super 16 footage was then shipped to Burbank, scanned to HDCAM SR, and conformed at SPY.

The beach is a stunning crescent of sand at the jungle fringe, utterly deserted. ISLA SORNA 87 miles southwest of Nublar Two SHIP HANDS, dressed in white uniforms, have set up a picnic table with three chairs on the sand and are carefully laying out luncheon service - - fine china, silver, crystal descanters with red and white wine. PAUL BOWMAN, fortyish, sits in a chair off to the side, reading. MRS. BOWMAN, painfully thin, with the perpetually surprised look of a woman who’s had her eyes done more than once, supervises the setting of the table. She looks up and sees a little girl, CATHY, seven or eight years old, wandering off down the beach. MRS. BOWMAN Cathy! Don’t wander off! Cathy keeps wandering. MRS. BOWMAN (CONT’D) Come back! To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys.
