ÖSTRA GÖINGE | 3 Discover Östra Göinge! In northeastern Skåne there is a very special place. You will meet people here who like to take their time. Who love the natural things in life. You can sit here in a rowing boat leisurely watching a bobbing fl oat, stroll along a quiet gravel road in the morning haze and listen to birdsong in the dense Snapphane forests. Or gaze in wonder at the world-famous art in Wanås sculpture park. Welcome! 4 | ÖSTRA GÖINGE Active relaxation There is a lot to do in Östra Göinge. And all activities have their roots in our natural environment. You will find that it is easy to be active here while at the same time enjoying free time that is really relaxing. A plethora of rivers and lakes offer excellent opportunities for swimming. There are superb fishing waters here with perch, pike-perch and pike. And fantastic canoe trails that allow you to get close to nature. Nature, culture, sports and outdoor life provide you with the prerequisites – but in Östra Göinge it is you yourself who create the experiences. ÖSTRA GÖINGE | 5 ”I love walking in the beech forest on a summer evening. There is no other experience that comes close to the sensation of the rustling trees and the enchanting light. For me extraordinary experiences often are extremely simple.” ”Wanås Castle Park and the Broby Community Centre are two exhilarating cultural contrasts.” 6 | ÖSTRA GÖINGE A proud history The Göinge lineage is a proud family with an equally proud history. You will note the zeal of residents for their past and for their home district. Their local identification is strong, and many feel more like Göinge natives than Swedes. The Göinge district is located in the historic border- land region between Sweden and Denmark, which is apparent in both its culture and architecture. If you explore the environs, you will find a living history – with traces from both everyday life and dramatic events from the past. ÖSTRA GÖINGE | 7 • Ballingstorpsgården – a well-preserved Snapphane farm • Rodatorpet – a soldier croft by Lake Farlången • Broby Community Centre is the second largest outdoor museum in Sweden • Sporrakulla – a Snapphane farm where you can imagine being back in the 17th century 8 | ÖSTRA GÖINGE Favourite places for the family On a holiday in Östra Göinge, you and your family are intimately involved in determining what you are going to do. That is not the easiest way to go – but it produces the best memories. The most enduring experiences are often closer than you might expect. And the returns are greater than the cost. We promise that you as well as your children will recall BBQ evenings by Helge River and nights in tents in the Snapphane forest. You will look long and hard for better taste sensations than newly caught perch. And the flowers that you and your children pick yourselves will become the most beautiful midsummer wreath you’ve ever seen. • Rent canoes at Immeln’s Canoe Centre • Book a guide for Simontorp Sawmill – an industrial setting from the 1930s • Go on a day hike on the Skåne trail • Visit the nature reserve by Sporrakulla farm • Swim and sunbathe at Trollabadet in Glimåkra • Cycle the rail trolley with a packed lunch • Try wilderness life at Camp Njura ÖSTRA GÖINGE | 9 ”We managed to do a great deal in a week at Östra Göinge. We pitched a tent at a campground down by the lake, where we swam and paddled a canoe. In the evening we grilled the fish that we had caught.” ”One day we rented a bicycle and went on an excursion. We visited the Snapphane forest and related exciting stories to our children.” 10 | ÖSTRA GÖINGE • Fredholm’s at Wanås combines locally grown Skåne food with flavours from the whole world • Restaurant Jeppes in Glimåkra – a pleasant place with traditional Danish cuisine • Gästis in Broby – classic Skåne inn dating back to the 17th century • Snapphane tavern in Knislinge offers game, Swedish home cooking and vegetarian dishes • The paper mill in Östanå serves nice, tasty organic food – prepared with love according to the concept ‘Refined Country Kitchen’ Skåne flavours and aromas Skåne cuisine has a long Many have been impressed tradition. ÖSTRA GÖINGE | 11 Clever solutions By nature, the Göinge people are a combination of persistence and inventiveness. In the dense forests survival often depended on coming up with clever solutions. And this spirit continues to operate in both the occupational and private lives of residents. Thanks to an abundance of good storytellers with a distinctive sense of humour, Göinge residents have contributed to their own mythology. Pose a question to a Göinge – and we assure you that you will get a complete story as an answer! 12 | ÖSTRA GÖINGE A beautiful contrast in art and culture Art should attract attention and galleries and studios here. be provocative. Today the castle is a lively meeting place for art, nature and history. The exhibitions with international contemporary art, the organic café and the shop with design and culinary art attract tens of thousands of visitors annually from all over the world. The scenic sculpture park has more than 50 works by, among others, Yoko Ono, Marina Abramovic, Jacob Dahlgren, Janet Cardiff, Srinivasa Prasad, Jenny Holzer and Ann-Sofi Sidén. During the summer art also is displayed in stable and storeroom buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. An exhibit in the old stable makes local history come alive. 14 | ÖSTRA GÖINGE Out in nature In Östra Göinge there’s lots to do, see and discover. It’s also a place of self-discovery, with peace and quiet in which you can recover. Enjoy a walk or cycle ride through the graceful, green beech forest with its magical light, or choose the dramatic, deep Kullaskogen Forest with its rich nature and wildlife. The outdoor museum stretches the boundary between inside and outside and is part of the surrounding natural and cultural-historical landscape. It is not staffed, is accessible year- round and admission is free. Black granite is attractive stone that is exported throughout the world. In the exhibition the golden age of the stone industry – from the end of the 19th century to the end of World War II – is described as well as the oftentimes hard and dangerous work in the quarries. In northeastern Skåne there are several other interesting destinations with stonemasonry history, such as the abandoned quarries in Hägghult, Gylsboda, Immelnbergen and Rumperöd. The district’s cultural history is now linked together through the outdoor museum in Sibbhult. ÖSTRA GÖINGE | 17 The Kingdom of Stone’s black gold A billion years ago black diabase was formed in northeastern Skåne from lava that was extruded from the earth’s core. Today it is world renowned for its high quality and is often used for buildings and artwork. Unprocessed, it is grey and rough, but cut and polished, it becomes glossy and a deep black – with a surface that will endure for 300 years. It is not surprising that diabase is often called the Kingdom of Stone’s black gold. 18 | ÖSTRA GÖINGE Helgeå Festival rocks again Helgeå Festival is being held for the tenth consecutive year, and this year the festival management has listened extensively to the visitors’ wishes.
