SOUTHERN FOURS AND EIGHTS NEWSLETTER OF THE SOUTHERN MORGAN GROUP MOGS OUTH VOL. 2/07 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance March 9-11, 2007 O nce again we were headed to Amelia Island on a Friday afternoon. This time however we were traveling north, out of Orlando, instead of south, from Atlanta. We thought it would be a simple two and half hour drive, but then again, we always seem to make things a bit more interesting. We started off in the Plus 8, got just a few miles up the road and realized we had forgotten the camera. We had to turn around. I couldn’t go to Amelia without a camera. A half hour later we are back on the road, this time, however, we were in the Mustang. I just can’t get comfortable in the Plus 8’s super sport buckets. My butt Photos and Article - Mark Braunstein Braunstein Mark Article - and Photos 1938 Talbot-Lago T-150C Figoni et Falaschi Teardrop - Absolutely magnificent! Continued on Next Page 1 was hurting after the short 30 minute run. I hated the thought of not having a Morgan in Amelia Island, but I hated the thought of a 2-3 hour ride on those super sports buckets, quite a bit worse, and the 4/4 needed propane. I really do have to do something about finding new seats for the Plus 8 or rebuilding these. Andrea doesn’t mind the seats and doesn’t see a problem if I can’t drive the car. But I can’t even ride in it comfortably.

  • Barrett-Jackson, and Pick up Your Ex- Clusive 26Th Anniversary Pin
ARIZONA ■ INTRODUCTION A Concours Joins the Auctions e’ve got a treat for you as a friend of Sports Car Market and Amer- ican Car Collector. Stop by our booth at Gooding, or come to the ACC Insider’s Seminar at Barrett-Jackson, and pick up your ex- clusive 26th anniversary pin. We ran out of our 25th anniversary Wpins nearly as soon as they were available in Monterey last year, and our 26th are sure to go as quickly. This guide, now on its eighth year, is the only complete guide to the week. You’ll find previews, maps, insider’s tips on where to eat, and advice from each auction company as to what to watch for in their events. Keep it handy. I know you’ll use it over and over. The Arizona Auction week may be on its way to becoming Arizona Collector-Car week. This year, both a concours and an automobilia marketplace join the calendar of events. Both the Arizona Concours d’Elegance and Automobilia Scottsdale are logical extensions of the sales. See more about them on pp. 44 and 50. Get ’em while All six auctions are geared up for action, maneuvering like they’re hot World War I dreadnoughts in the North Sea as they prepare to fire their salvos of desirable cars, from $5,000 trinkets to multi-million-dollar masterpieces. This is my 26th year going to Arizona, and the same advice applies as in years past. Carry sunscreen for the hot winter sun; those of us from winter climes may not realize ADVERTISERS INDEX just how pale we’ve become, and being toasty red all week just isn’t much fun.

  • How to Reach Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille
CHANTILLY ARTS & ELEGANCE RICHARD MILLE 9 & 10 SEPTEMBER IN THE PREMIUM LEAGUE! The fourth Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille will be held in 2017 and it has already earned prestigious accolades starting with the Historic Motoring Award of the Year for the first Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille by Octane, the benchmark British magazine, which gave it the same award the following year, and it was again nominated in 2016. Since 2015 it has enjoyed the honorary sponsorship of the French Ministry of Culture and Communications. And it has just been nominated by the Peninsula Classics Committee for the Best of the Best Award for 2016, 2017 and 2018. All these prizes have crowned the concept of this event that has revived the Concours d’Elégance of which France was the cradle in the 1920s, as well as celebrating the French Art de Vivre, an inestimable richness of which our country can be justly proud. Boosted by this success and still on the lookout for improvements to enhance the excellence of the event, Peter Auto is enriching and refining its concours to make it even more magical and captivating in the eyes of its public and partners. Thus, the 2017 event will have certain evolutions including new dates (a week later than in previous years), the Bonhams auction moved to Sunday, an even bigger spectacle with the return of Mario Luraschi with a new equestrian show, and a richer manufacturers’ village with Bugatti, DS Automobiles, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Tesla and others to be announced in the near future. And of course, the motorbikes! The ingredients that have put this newcomer in the premium league and thrilled more than 13 000 visitors in the last two stagings are still the same.

T I have long wanted a listing of the most significant museums in the U.S. in one easy-to- access digest. This guide fulfills that need. I’m keeping a copy in my glovebox. I love automotive museums of all types, from the rigorous, intellectually challenging Petersen and Revs collections to “I bought it because I liked it” private collections. The history of the automobile spans little more than 130 years, starting with the Benz Patent-Motorwagen in 1886. Thus in a single museum you can often follow the evolution of the motor car from the horseless carriage to the Bugatti Chiron. As you stroll through the museums listed here, reflect on what the cars on display tell you about the tastes of the owners who collected them. The cars and the people behind them are inextricably intertwined, as it should be with these four-wheeled chariots of passion. — Keith Martin, Publisher, Sports Car Market ■ FeATUreS 12 The Qualities That Make a Museum Great — Donald Osborne 18 Map of Major Automotive Museums in the U.S. FeATUreD MUSeUMS eAST 28 Indianapolis Motor Speedway 40 The Cobra experience Museum 20 The Buffalo Transportation 41 Fountainhead Antique Auto Pierce Arrow Museum 28 Packard Proving Grounds Museum 20 Newport Car Museum 30 Studebaker National Museum 41 LeMay—America’s Car Museum 22 Owls Head Transportation 30 The Henry Ford Museum 42 National Automobile Museum SOUTH (The Harrah Collection) 22 Simeone Foundation 32 The revs Institute Inc.
