We look forward to seeing you all Everything! around the club and to some great Gold Coast sailing We have recently finished our first overseas conditions. competition for this year, the sailing world cup event Thank you all for your support, in Miami. We are pleased to report that we have come away with another medal, a silver one this time. Yet it feels a little bit funny to write that we were slightly Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan disappointed with the result, coming second to one of our toughest competitors (the British team who won #Aus11 silver at the London Olympics). We were satisfied with www.belcherryan2016.com our performances and happy with our preparations coming into the event. But our competitors are working hard as well, and the journey towards Rio 2016 is ever challenging for us with high expectations. Success over the years has altered the satisfaction of performance, second simply is no longer good enough. This is the reality of elite sport, we are always looking to ways to improve and define new areas of our sport. It is the main reason I decided to continue to Rio 2016 and I am loving the challenge. Our disappointment with silver keeps us hungry, wanting more, working hard to ensure that next time we meet our competition on the water we are one step ahead. Considering this, maybe silver is not such a bad colour after all. It was also great to see fellow SYC sailor Joel Turner to come away with a silver medal in the 49ers and I am sure it will motivate him to achieve many more great results. It was fantastic to see the talent this club has produced and the Mathew Belcher OAM and Will Ryan exciting times ahead. golf @ syc

10 | iN SYnC | Southport Yacht Club dux anchorage

Dux Anchorage on South Stradbroke Island is an outstanding facility for the use of Southport Yacht Club Gold (or equivalent members) and guests on their boat. The name originates from the Dux family who held oyster leases in the area, north of Tipplers, also part of the SYC leasehold is on land that was sand mined during the 1950s and 60s. The first move to obtain a lease for SYC at Dux dates back to the early seventies, eventually a lease was granted by Albert Shire Council in 1981. Over the years following a tremendous amount of volunteer work by members, the Dux Committee and the continuing support of the Associates Committee has seen the site develop to what it is today- a magnificent Club facility. The first Dux Caretaker was appointed in 1985 Mark Lopez is the current caretaker being appointed in September last year. Mark and his wife Lynne live on site at the caretaker’s residence, they are keen boaties and their trawler style cruiser is moored at Dux. Mark has a long history with boats and is a former Committee member of Redlands Boat Club and Vice Commodore of Little Ship Club on North Stradbroke. They are enjoying their time at Dux, keeping the place ship shape, meeting/assisting visiting members and they will always make time to have a yarn about boats. One of the new additions to Dux is the long awaited Pontoon that was a joint project with the neighbouring property run by The Southport School (TSS). It was a tireless effort by several Club members over many years to obtain approval for the pontoon. The pontoon is a great benefit for SYC members making it much easier and more comfortable to access the onshore facilities. Everyone using the pontoon needs to be courteous and considerate of other members and TSS. There is a ten minute loading and unloading limit for larger vessels, but there is no time limit for tenders/ dinghies to be tied to the walkway. But to allow maximum use of the facility dinghies/tenders should be tied to the walkway with one rope and be allowed to swing out. We also need to be considerate of TSS, the understanding is that SYC members do not tie up on the southern side. If everyone using the pontoon is respectful of the need to share the pontoon with fellow members and our neighbours then it will make a day or a weekend or longer at Dux the relaxing time it should always be. Members please remember it is compulsory for you and your guests to sign in apon arrival.

26 | iN SYnC | Southport Yacht Club joel turner - my summer + more

Just like every other year, the Australian summer is in the Miami World Cup Event in the US. I got the call up a very busy time for sailors with multiple regattas and to jump into his spot and sail the regatta with his crew competitions being held in all different parts of the country. Iain Jensen, better known as Goobs. So ofcourse I dropped The 2014/2015 Australian summer was a particularly good everything I was doing at home and booked myself a flight one for myself and my crew Lewis Brake. to America for the regatta beginning in 7 days from my phone call. It was race time again! Our regatta plan for the summer was similar to a lot of other SYC sailors which included Sail Sydney, closely With 60 49ers attending the event including almost all the followed by Sail Melbourne and then of course the big trip best, Goobs and I didn’t know what to expect results wise over to Perth for our class nationals. In terms of priorities, going into the regatta as a brand new team. We had two Sail Melbourne was an ISAF World Cup Event for the days of training to work some things out on the boat and Olympic Classes. So that was the most important regatta we had three practice races the day before the regatta. of the summer for us. Sail Sydney would be a warm up to In light shifty conditions we won the first two races so we that and nationals had importance in terms of beating our thought maybe we might be able to do okay here. Day one competition and training partners. of the regatta hit us with 22kts and pouring rain and big waves. Sailing a 49er in those conditions, the team needs So we kicked it off in Sydney where there was only 4 49ers to be perfectly synchronized. We were not at the time. So racing but two of those teams were from Italy and New we were sitting in 18th place overall. We began chipping Zealand. With some great 49er race tracks on the typical away at the next few days with a very wide range of Sydney Harbour in fresh NE seabreezes, we sailed quite conditions again and very shifty breezes. We then moved well in all conditions to take out the win with quite a few up to 4th overall, and then to tied first overall. So similar points to spare. We were happy enough with this because to the situation in Melbourne, in the medal race the worst Lewis and I hadn’t actually competed since our “not so we could finish overall was 7th and the best we could good result” in the Santander ISAF Worlds in September. finish was 1st on the pointscore. It was all to play for. So we pack up and quickly drive down to Melbourne where Unfortunately, I made a very small tactical mistake on the there was only enough time for one day of training on the first upwind which let our main competitors past us who race course. we had to beat to win the regatta. They sailed through We had a much better fleet of competition at Sail for the win and we held onto our 2nd place overall. There Melbourne with a lot of the top 49er teams travelling down will always be moments that you learn from and wish you under. Racing in a wide range of conditions, Lewis and I could have done that little bit better but that’s how we managed to take some bullets at the end of the regatta learn. Goobs and myself were definitely not disappointed which put us into high contention of a medal. Going into with a silver medal though! The boats we were racing the medal race the points were tight. The worst we could against all had sailors who have been doing this for many finish overall was 6th and the best would be 2nd. Our more years than me so I am very happy with the end goal for the regatta was top 5 but in that medal race we result. sailed past our competitors to take out the silver medal! When we looked at the fleet we were racing, me with what I’m trying to achieve. we were very happy to finish in this position. So the Fremantle Doctor provided us with 20+kts of wind and dead flat water almost See you all around the boat park! every day of our racing. Lewis and I were very happy with Article by Joel Turner this! J 49ers are built for flat water and if you can handle them in the breeze it’s just a serious amount of fun burning around the race course. So we sailed quite fast here and won 10 of our 15 races ahead of our Australian Sailing Team training partners David Gilmour and Rhys Mara. This was actually my very first Open National Championship victory so this was quite special for me. So after the celebrations, Lewis flew home to have a family holiday and I hung around for one more regatta in Perth with a brand new 49er sailor. James Wierzbrowski is a very good catamaran sailor but he is currently transitioning to the 49er squad where he is learning to sail without his floaties. We sailed in the Oceanic Regatta at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. With some extremely shifty and challenging conditions we managed to place third in that event, which wasn’t too bad considering we had never sailed together before and James is brand new to 49ers. So that was where my summer ended… until I got a very unexpected phone call about a week later. Nathan Outteridge, for personal reasons was not able to compete

Over the holidays I competed at 3 main events which and saw what Australia had to offer. These where the all consisted of high competition and had great skill 3 best regattas I have ever sailed. The competition across the board. The first was Sail Sydney. This was great this year and I can’t wait to jump on the regatta was a lot of fun and I met tons of new friends circuit again next year for some fine racing. Good and had a great time. The conditions there were luck to all racing in the New Year and I hope you all difficult to say the least. We were hit with light and have some great results and good fun. shifty conditions that was definitely a challenge but really paid off for the smarter sailor, I sailed well in Article by Max Quan this medium sized fleet and managed to finish with a 3rd. The next regatta I competed at was the 2014 Open Laser 4.7 national championships. This was a fairly heavy weather regatta which paid off for the fitter and more experienced sailors in the class. I sailed expectationally well and finished 18th and 1st Queenslander. This was a great regatta for me because even though I didn’t match the 3rd place in Sydney the fleet was much larger so an 18th was great! We then moved to the Fremantle Youth Championships. This regatta had the largest Laser 4.7 fleet I have ever raced in. It was a medium wind regatta with one light day and one heavy day. The whole Queensland team sailed well and kept the rest of the Nation on its toes. Due to a black flag in the last race I dropped a couple of spots to a 22nd and 1st Queenslander which is still a great result. It was great to meet kids from Photo caption: Max Quan sailing Mad Max International backgrounds and teams who travelled leads the Laser 4.7 fleet at Sail Sydney. the distance to race against us and they all raced well Extract from mysailing .com / Credit Robin Evans - Sail Sydney george morton - 4.7 nationals & o’pen bic cup

In the summer I went off to compete in national I really like the speed and fun of the Bics, and since regattas with others to represent SYC, me in two I have been in them, have doubled in size. It’s good different classes. they are at SYC where good training is available and better competition. I thank Joel Turner for the First it was the Laser 4.7 Youth Nationals in Freo, training session we had at SYC before leaving. I can I am quite new to this class, so it was a very odd help other kids learn to sail them. feeling going to a nationals with so many boats and people. The Youth Nationals was held at the Swapping from the Laser into the O’Pen BIC with Fremantle Sailing Club, they played a great host to its fully battened mono film rig requires changes in all us sailors. technique. The skiff tacks faster, is a tippy planing hull, very sensitive to outhaul and batten setting. Fremantle had unusual conditions. Almost every day With all these differences I struggled to be able to the wind constantly swinging and tending from the change over and be competitive, unfortunately SE to the SW. In WA means it came across the land disrupting my first days performance. bringing very hot and shifty weather. Not my best ever regatta but a great learning curve. I got a mid Kristin Wadley from won, from Sean & Liam fleet result. Herbert from NZ. I finished 6th Overall, 4th U16 and 3rd Australian, which means I’m selected into the My next regatta was the Australian O’Pen BIC Cup Australian team for the next World O’Pen BIC Cup. The O’Pen BIC I have been sailing the Bic for while now, this Worlds is a very new junior skiff class that is very fast fun. maybe be my last regatta as U16. Competition runs three age groups, Under 13, U16 and U19. I competed in U16, a fleet of 52, so being Article by George Morton over or disqualified meant a lot of points. This year’s regatta had several current or ex World Champions. Sailors came from Czech Republic, New Zealand and USA, all friends of mine as we sailed in the Worlds together last July in Germany. The front of the fleet was very close racing, lots of lead changes. On water judges mean no protest room. Of course no- bailing out if you capsize.
