have to make an additional argument. The argument is: Although we do not deserve a good year on our own merits, since so many people rely upon us it is important that we be given a good year. In other words, we are “too big to fail.” Do not think that this only applies to people who are heads of organi- zations, CEOs of companies, or shul rabbanim. Think about what you do for your family, your community, and your job. If we spent the time thinking about what would happen if, G-d for- bid, something bad would happen to us and how it would affect others, we would realize how important we are in many other people’s lives. By the same token, we should not let this realization (that what we do has an impact on many people) go to our head and make us haughty. On one hand, we have to make the argument that we are so important and people rely upon on. On the other hand, we have to think that no one is irreplace- able. It is not an easy balancing act but it is necessary. S’lichos is supposed to be led by a person who is married and has chil- dren. The usual reason given is that the more responsibilities one has, the more he worries. The more he wor- ries, the more likely he will say the S’lichos with the right kavanah and do t’shuvah. I would suggest a second reason: A person with more responsi- bilities has a better chance of having his prayers accepted, since he or she is “too big to fail.” May we all be inscribed in the Book of Life for a year of health and fi nan- cial success.

Thank you, Hashem, for sparing us and helping us travel this leg of our trip safely! Miracle One.

It was now 3:15 p.m. and the sky was still clear in Manhattan. Prior to our trip, we called a kosher restau- rant and they recommended we make reservations for 4:00 p.m. so we could beat the crowd. I suggested we park closer to our destination, the per- formance hall on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. By doing so, it would make it safer after the show for us to return to the car, late at night. “Don’t worry,” I said. “It’s summertime and most peo- ple are away, so it should be easy to fi nd a spot.” The joke was on me. We circled around endlessly. Now, my friend was getting anxious. At this point I called out, “Please, Hashem, help us fi nd a parking spot. Please!” On the very next block, there was a spot. Miracle Two.

We parked the car and began walking in the direction of the restaurant. Now, we had another problem: The restaurant was about 30 blocks away. My new, wonder- ful friend (who is more NYC-savvy than me) advised that we catch a taxi. Now, I know zilch about taxis. But apparently, when they are in service, there is a light on the top of the taxi to indicate this. Taxi after taxi whizzed by, but no taxi seemed available. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a taxi driver pulled up without his service light on and asked, “Where are you going?” “Fifth Avenue and 48th Street,” answered my friend. “Hop in,” he said. “Even though I ended my shift, it’s on my way home. I’ll take you.” Miracle Three.

A comfortable cab ride with pleasant conversation, Hashem once again proved his kindness. We arrived at the restaurant at exactly 3:59 p.m. Miracle Four. The dinner was delectable. We talked, laughed, and spoke words of Torah. But, the looming, possible thunderstorm irked us. We wanted so much to stroll to the performance hall, drinking in the Manhattan atmosphere, enjoying the freedom from our weekday stresses. By now, it was 5:45 p.m. Specks of grayish-white

I was so impressed with the amount of support from the Fair- fi eld community, and that they came out to celebrate Fairfi eld’s 375th anniversary celebration. Event co-chair Don Sharbin was present and shared his appreciation and support of the community for making this event run smoothly. He added, “We’re thrilled that town offi cials have joined forces with us, both to promote the event through their media as well as to help coor- dinate police and emergency staff. They have generously arranged for free shuttles to and from the fes- tival to be offered by town public transportation services from area schools’ parking lots, as well as the Metro North train stations in Fair- fi eld.” We defi nitely had an incredible day and plan to go back next year. Do you have an enterprising BBQ team in the works? Maybe you will be representing BBQ Gardens Hills next year.
