Introduction Geographies of Alcohol, Drinking and Drunkenness This is the first book with a focus on geographies of alcohol, drinking and drunkenness. While disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, criminology, politics, social policy, and the health and medical sciences have a long tradition of exploring the role of alcohol, drinking and drunkenness in peoples’ lives, geographers have only recently began engage in this area of research. In the context of the voluminous number of books, journal articles, book chapters and official reports, research undertaken by geographers has yet to make a significant impact on debates. Nonetheless, recent work has shown that geographers have much to offer academic, policy and popular understandings of the complex political, economic, social, cultural and spatial practices and processes bound up with alcohol, drinking and drunkenness. The aim of this book is to build on that progress. By presenting theoretically informed empirical research undertaken in the UK and drawing on writing from around the world, we argue that space and place must be conceptualized as key constituents of practices and processes relating to alcohol, drinking and drunkenness. In doing so, we foreground the ways in which geographical approaches to studying alcohol, drinking and drunkenness can contribute to debates within and beyond the discipline. While geographers are relative newcomers, a geographical focus has nonetheless, been a traditional feature of alcohol research agendas. Consideration of spatial relations, practices and concepts focused on issues such as distinctions between public and private, the city and the countryside, boundaries and transgressions, visibility and invisibility, centrality and marginality, national and local identities (and so on) have been a key feature of alcohol research. Indeed, theorists have addressed a diverse range of topics relating to legislation, policy and policing; production, marketing and retail; consumption, identity, lifestyle and forms of sociability at a variety of different transnational, national, regional and local spatial scales. However, despite alcohol studies including significant geographical research, there has been little consideration of the ways in which space and place are active constituents of the topics being studied. In these terms the geographical focus of alcohol research has tended to simply offer a location or focus, rather than as a key theoretical

Papers have to be written, powerpoints put together, and last minute travel plans attended to. Life can be especially hectic if the meeting coincides with the end of a semester, as it does for many of us this year. Nonetheless, this time of year also provides an opportunity for specialty group board members to pause and take stock. For a number of reasons, I have recently been struck by the amazing vibrancy and massive growth of the UGSG in recent years. Take our membership, for instance. Currently the group has 1,388 members (Student Members: 841; Non-Student Members: 547). My records indicate that in 2000 the group had 556 members. A similar growth is evident in the number of sessions we sponsor or co-sponsor at the meeting. This year the number is 113 sessions. In 2000, we sponsored/co-sponsored 25 sessions and a number in the 30s has been the norm recently. This jump in participation is also evident in the submissions we have received for student competitions – there were 18 submissions for the dissertation competition, for example, whereas in the past it had been possible to count the dissertation submissions on one hand. The reasons for this shift are numerous – for example, the board should be commended for their promotion of the student awards – and there are pros and cons to such sharp growth.

Peter Mackie, Cardiff University Clapham et al (2012, 2014) examined the housing pathways of young people in the UK in the years 1999 to 2008. The research identified the nature of young people’s housing pathways and considered the likely changes up to 2020, concluding that we should expect a growing number of young people living in the private rented sector (PRS), including families and young people on relatively low incomes. Clapham et al (2012, 2014) called for fundamental changes to the regulation of the PRS in order to more effectively meet the changing needs of young tenants. Fundamental policy reform has not been forthcoming. In this presentation I will revisit the key predictions of the 2020 report and, drawing on 2011 census data and empirical findings of a household survey of PRS tenants conducted in 2014, consider whether the concerns over 2020 are already becoming a reality. Young People Coping with Austerity in a Hot Housing Market: The Case of ‘Live-in-Guardians’ - Desiree Fields (Geography, University of Sheffield), Sarah Marie Hall (Geography, University of Manchester), and Mark Jayne (Geography, University of Manchester) This paper explores the case of ‘live-in-guardian’ schemes, where property owners offer temporary, affordable housing, heavily marketed towards young, middle-class professionals, in desirable city locations. Contemporary changes in the housing market, exacerbated under austerity, have led to a situation where many young people are unable to access affordable housing in urban areas, often at the same time as limited employment opportunities and significant changes to social welfare provision.

Last year’s inaugural Institute was a great success and we hope this year’s will be as intellectually and personally stimulating. While there are disciplinary and thematic summer events, so called because of their tendency to occur in the global north in July or August, no other has taken aim at the inter-disciplinary field that is urban studies. That is the aim of this institute. For as we move through the 21st century, which has been referred to by some as the “urban age”, so we are faced with intellectual challenges to which any single discipline seems ill-fitted. Conceptually and methodologically, making sense of our own bits of the urban puzzle - whether that is climate change, energy, infrastructure, housing or migration to name but five issues with which many cities are currently wrestling – demands we look beyond the disciplines in which we have each been trained. Anthropologists, architects, economists, engineers, geographers, historians, linguists, medics, planners, political scientists, sociologists; those working on the cities of the future are many, their intellectual backgrounds varied. This institute will draw on debates in some of these disciplines, and the wider field of urban studies, providing a space for critical, considered, constructive and supportive intellectual engagement.
