Brevard Live June 2011 - 17 I’m With ... The Wrestler Hulk Hogan

By Matthew “The Bretzle” Bretz

hen I was a kid the WWF (World- Wwide Wrestling Federation) was one of the highest rated shows on television, and Hulk Hogan was king of the castle. Back then it was all about the charac- ters: Andre the Giant, Sergeant Slaugh- ter, Superfly Jimmy Snooka, Captain Lou Albano, Mount Fuji, Sting the Ultimate Warrior, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Rick Flair... the list goes on and on. There was even a Saturday morning car- toon show dedicated to it. During those days it was still unclear whether or not pro wrestling was real or not. The bas- tard child of official Greco Roman style and Mexican theatrical wrestling - pro wrestling in America took it all to a new level. And during the eighties it explod- ed. Today’s pro wrestling is as fake as photos by Janet Eckhardt can be when it comes to the actual fight-

18 - Brevard Live June 2011 one and only... Hullllkkkkk Hooooooogannnn! Standing to the far right, in a frozen pose of quiet strength, Hogan watches as his crew descends upon the ring. More wres- tlers appear and there seems to be some kind of altercation. Mics are handed out and we are all now privy to the verbal throw down going on between the two disagreeing parties. It doesn’t last long, just a continuation of the story line that loosely runs throughout the season. There are always alliances being made and broken within the ranks. There are good guys and bad guys and sometimes even double agents. It’s really kind of a live action comic book with the closest thing to super heroes we can have in the real world. Hulk, or should I say the script, decides that he’s done with the banter and he heads backstage again. And that’s when it all starts. All the wrestlers on the floor jump into the ring to fight the opposing forces for their now absent general. Fist fly and almost land, heads are gently pushed into turnbuckles, guys fall on the mat after being nearly clothes lined. It’s a total (fake) massacre, at least until com- mercial break. As the night goes on actual matches take place and many more story lines are advanced. During commercial breaks stage hands work quickly to make various scen- ery changes for the next segment and characters take their places for whatever is scripted to come next. The whole machine is very well oiled and the show is seamless. It’s amazing. Everything is fake of course, except for the fun and there is no shortage of that. As an added surprise one of the cast members of Jersey Shore makes his wrestling debut in an exhibition match. Clothes lined, body slammed and rolled, his hair never moves, just amazing. After the show we are taken backstage to meet the talent. There in a room full of muscle mass and testoster- one I scan frantically for the man in charge. But alas the Hulk has left the building. Having had recent back surgery Hogan suffers from pain as of late and headed out for his home Clearwater over an hour ago. Maybe another time. Leaving the theater I wonder what my gimmick would be if I were a pro wrestler. I don’t know what I would call myself, but my signature move would be the “bretzle”.

Did you know? In 1978 Hogan took a hiatus from wrestling and managed a club in Cocoa Beach, known as the Anchor Club for a man named Whitey Bridges. Eventually, Whitey and Hogan became close friends and decided to open a gym together called Whitey and Terry’s Olym- pic gym. It’s been told that the Hulk also worked as security at Brassy’s during big concerts. If you know more, please tell us at facebook.com/Brevard Live.

Brevard Live June 2011 - 19 Local History he Henegar Center is is one of Brevard TCounty’s oldest public buildings and was designed by W.M. Christen, architect of many of Melbourne’s most important historic build- ings. It was constructed to become a Melbourne School Complex

Construction began in 1919 and in the fall of 1920 the building opened. It was soon to become the first of three structures to stand on the site. The first high school class, consisting of only 13 students graduated in 1921. At its highest the enrollment reached 1400. In 1963 the school was named for former Principal Ruth Henegar (1950–1951). In 1975 enrollment reached an all time low of 331 students and the decision to close the school was made. On June 11, 1975 after 55 years the doors of the school closed. To this day the two remaining structures has housed many things prior to becoming the community cultural center that it is today. In the late 60’s both outer buildings were closed as instructional buildings and the west building (Trinity Towers South now oc- cupies this land) housed Brevard Junior College (now Brevard Community College, BCC): the center build- ing (Henegar Center) was used by the school board and other county offices. In 1980 the West building was demolished to make room for Trinity Towers South, in 1983 a small group of local residents acted and formed a non-profit corporation- the Brevard Regional Arts Group (BRAG) and went to work to restore the two remaining buildings. In1984 The North Building Cul- tural Center was granted a forty- year renewable lease and BRAG was deeded the buildings by the Brevard County School System. BRAG mobilized the commu- nity and was able to raise $2.5 million. In 1991 the Henegar Center for the Arts opened its doors with a 493-seat Proscenium style Theatre, designed by Tony Award winning Broadway Designer Peter Feller. The original main stage curtain was from the Broadway Musical The King and I. State of the art sound and lighting equipment was installed in order to present the highest quality productions. The main building also boasts many spaces including the main ballroom, Reception room, Courtyard Garden Room, a mirrored dance studio and two additional meeting spaces. In addition, the public spaces are home to ro- tating exhibitions of work by local artists. Located at 625 E New Haven Ave in Melbourne (across the post-office). Tel.: (321) 723-8698.

recent report from the National Oceanic and Atmo- Aspheric Administration claims that “solar storms” pose a growing threat to our dear planet Earth. It seems that the sun is in a “waking up” phase that will reach its peak in 2013. There has been a much greater frequency in these occurrences over the past few years. In February of 2011, a giant solar flare threatened the Earth. Charged solar particles hitting the Earth’s magnetic field effect all kinds of radio transmission, TV, communications satel- lites, GPS systems and potentially take out entire electri- cal grids across the country. In this instance, it jammed radio signals in southern China. In 1973, 6 million peo- ple lost electricity in Canada due to one of these flares. The good thing, though, is that we may be able to see the Aurora Borealis or “Northern Lights” as far south as the northern United States! Woo-hooo! Well, I guess if you can’t watch “Dancing With the Stars” because there’s no electricity or TV signal for that matter, and you can’t drive anywhere because the electronic sensors and stuff in your car got fried, and you can’t go to the bar and get wasted because nobody has a cold beer or ice, and noth- ing would be open anyway because there’s no electricity, so you couldn’t even mosey on down to the 7-11, well, I guess all you could do is lay in your yard and stare at the sky and play with all your toys that run on batteries until they die, too. (The ladies might like that part). Hmmm… seems like a pretty grim situation.

These solar storms are some of the most powerful events in nature. Too bad we mere mortals can’t figure out a way to make this happen artificially, so we can inflict this mayhem upon ourselves, without the need for messy solar storms and such. But wait! We can!! For a few de- cades now there has been much research and development into EMP or Electro Magnetic Pulse bombs. Many con- spiracy theorists (and many who are not) believe the next terrorist threat will be one of these devastating EMPs. An EMP, according to “National Geographic”, is “a bomb that’s designed to go above the atmosphere and release

22 - Brevard Live June 2011 huge amounts of energy, some of which in the form of gamma rays.” This type of bomb would cripple whole electronic grids but not kill people. My understanding of the matter is that some kind of nuclear explosion would take place high in the atmosphere, emitting vast amounts of gamma rays, potentially crippling the electric grid of at least half the country! Imagine, no one in the area from the east coast to the Mississippi River could travel, com- municate, watch “South Park”, make a phone call, text, blog, tweet, go to Starbucks, NOTHING! What kind of mayhem would that be? On top of that, it would take years to fix!

Well, not to worry. As usual, I have it all figured out. Got my list together for survival, but we have to start now. Firstly, I’ll stock up on ACOUSTIC guitars. Don’t need electricity for them. Then I’d make a bunch of col- lapsible megaphones, like those cups you used to be able to get, only bigger. They’ll have to do for sound rein- forcement equipment. Next we need a bunch of string and a crapload of cans and paper cups. That will be the only way to communicate long distance. The telephone poles are already there, so half the infrastructure is already in place! Just make sure the string is tight! I ran a string out my front door, around my house, and into my neighbors house behind me. He still yells constantly about what a friggin moron I am, but I can hear it REALLY clearly now. Of course, you have to stock up on the necessities: Camel lights, instant coffee, matches, and Twinkies (av- erage shelf life = 22 years). And don’t forget the duct tape! I’ll get a bicycle with a wagon attached to the back to haul my stuff to my gigs - oh, wait, there won’t be any gigs. You’ll have to take a towel down to the Indian River to bathe (hmmm, I usually have to bathe when I get OUT of the river). I’m also making an analog version of Fa- cebook. Right now it consists of an old sketch book that I’ve begun drawing pictures of my “friends” in, one to a page, so if you want to post anything, you have to come to my house and actually write it in the book. I think it will be a really big hit!

Now, maybe, just maybe it won’t be that bad. Hey! I can still have a dream, can’t I?

A Cocoa Beach Original: Meet Joel Silver

eople who are into health food and/or traditional Pblues music have known Joel Silver all along. For them he’s almost a legend. As founder and president of Sunseed Coop in Cape Canaveral, Joel brought a new concept of doing business and healthy living to the Space Coast at a time when few people were living here and nobody locked their homes or cars. Being a life-long hippie he’s missing those days. His other passion is blues music, networking with national artists and inviting them to perform his hometown.

Born 1945 in Salem, Mass., he grew up in a middle- class family. His father owned a plumbing, heating, electri- cal supply store and Joel decided early on that he “never wanted to become a retailer. Too much work,” he said and chuckled. “Then I ended up becoming just that.” However, that’s not how he started off. He began play- ing drums at 13 years old, at age 15 he was playing in clubs. “Back then electric guitars were new and everyone wanted to play them,” remembered Joel. “They all needed a drum- mer, so here I was.” It was the time of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and all the cool cats. The 45 records came in along with the hippie-movement and Joel found himself in the middle of it all - drinking, drugs, the party never seemed to stop. In 1962 Joel began studying engineering, hated it and after one year decided to pursue a degree in photography. For quite some years he worked for newspapers, then built his own commercial photography studio and made his money shooting commercial photos for big companies. And in natural and organic food increased, so did business.” while he earned a lot of money, he felt as if something was Nowadays the store has more than 5,000 members, grosses missing in his life. over $3 million and has a retail space of 5,000 squ.ft. with In 1971 Joel left in his VW van and started trav- 17 staff members. By Trrey Cronin anther’s life is quite an interesting one. She grew Pup in Chicago, but she found a strong bond with the waters of the ocean when her family moved aboard their 44ft. trawler, which she considered her “second home.” As a family, they would explore anywhere from Nova Scotia to the Grand Bahamas. Her tradi- tional education was learned through homeschooling, but she felt the “paradise” she explored with her family “fed her soul.” Panther felt that the best way to honor the sea was through her art which gave “her a voice.”

Panther went on and studied art design at Columbia Col- lege in Chicago, Illinois. She focused her skills doing set and scenic design in the city for local productions. Her work ex- panded to Los Angeles, and Florida creating sets and props for film, stage, and photography. It was Panther’s mural work that seemed to garner the most attention, because they have a deliberate style of “vivid and bold usage of colors and scale.” Many requests for her murals were asked by private clients, and helped Panther gain notoriety, since she calls them her “bread and butter.” Panther describes her creativity as “limitless,” and this can certainly be noticed by her plethora of other artistic talents. Panther has juggled with a music career, ever since she spent time in Los Angeles. In the Melbourne and Orlando communi- ties, she sang, played piano, and played guitar for her bands: Blue Bloods, Bad Cat, and Junglebunny. Panther has also en- joyed painting, and likes to focus on a lot of “mother-daughter” themes in her paintings. She describes her works as “living art” because the energy they produce is “three-dimensional” and “unrestricted.” Her jewelry is Recently, most of Panther’s focus has been on her jewelry contemporary and line. Her jewelry is described as very contemporary and avant- garde, and has been sought after by many of the top “hipster” avant-garde, and has pop singers, which include Katy Perry and Avril Lavigne. My Life in Commercials By Matthew Bretz
