‘Ice’ and slow with Rufus Wainwright The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), 220 E. Chicago, embraced Chicago’s subzero weather, naming its annual benefit “Dry Ice.” The event, held Saturday, Jan. 24, was limited to200 guests for a live art auction and an intimate performance by singer/songerwriter Rufus Wain- wright. The live auction featured art pieces by modern art superstars Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, and Olafur Eliasson. The Olafur Eliasson piece raised $92,000, the highest bid of the evening for a single item. The Eliasson item was also a favorite of Mayor Richard Daley, who was present with his wife, Maggie. “This museum always is on the cutting edge, you can see the number of fami- lies, younger families have made a difference in this city. they need it [money] in these hard economic times, shows you a lot of people come through with that auction,” said Daley. For his performance, Wainwright sat at the piano solo. He introduced each song with a joke or a statement, dedicating the song “In My Arms” to his boyfriend—“the German fellow, who is here.” He acknowledged the mayor’s presence by quipping, “...this is great. I’ve cornered [Michael] Bloomberg a couple of times...and he still haven’t come to one of my shows, so I’m moving here: Chicago, the Paris of Illinois.” For more information on future events at the MCA, visit www.mcachicago.org.
