Melbourne’s new football club in recent historical perspective.1 Roy Hay and Heath McDonald © Sports and Editorial Services Australia and Deakin University In 2005 a completely new football (soccer) team, the Melbourne Victory, was created in Victoria, Australia to play in a new national league, the A-League.2 Within a year it was drawing more than 50 000 fans to a regular season home game against Sydney FC in a league whose eight participants stretch from Perth, Western Australia to Auckland in New Zealand.3 This was the third time in less than a decade that a new soccer team had been launched in a city which is best known for its devotion to Australian Rules football, cricket and horse racing.4 The other two, Collingwood Warriors and Carlton, lasted one season and three seasons and eight games respectively before collapsing in acrimony and debt. Collingwood and Carlton began with on-field success. Collingwood won the National Soccer League (NSL) cup in 1996–67,

  • Inquiry Into Food Standards Amendment (Truth in Labelling
ZOOS VICTORIA’S SUBMISSION TO SENATE COMMITTEE ON COMMUNITY AFFAIRS Inquiry into the Food Standards Amendment (Truth in Labeling Laws) Bill 2009 FROM THE COMEDIANS OF AUSTRALIA Thank you for considering this submission on the Food Standards Amendment (Truth in Labeling Laws) Bill 2009. We want to know whether the food we buy is fuelling an environmental crisis in South East Asia. Australia’s food labeling laws are preventing us from making an informed choice, but shouldn’t every single Australian have the right to know what is in our food? Here’s what we do know: that loss of virgin rainforest to make way for the production of palm oil accounts for the death of more than 50 orang-utans a week. 1 Rainforest is destroyed at a rate equivalent to 300 soccer fields every hour to make way for palm oil plantations. 2 The destruction is only going to get worse. By 2020, Indonesia’s oil palm plantations are projected to triple in size to 16.5 million hectares – an area the size of England and Wales combined.3 And we have absolutely no idea if we are contributing to this environmental crisis, because it’s not compulsory to label palm oil in our food products. We are prepared to send a delegation to appear before the Senate Committee on Community Affairs. Bond Law Review Volume 23 | Issue 1 Article 3 2011 The nI ternational World of Sport and the Liability for Off-Field Indiscretions Chris Davies Follow this and additional works at: http://epublications.bond.edu.au/blr This Article is brought to you by the Faculty of Law at ePublications@bond. It has been accepted for inclusion in Bond Law Review by an authorized administrator of ePublications@bond. For more information, please contact Bond University's Repository Coordinator. The nI ternational World of Sport and the Liability for Off-Field Indiscretions Abstract The recent terminations of the contracts of NRL player, Joel Monaghan and the AFL’s Brendan Fevola, for off-field indiscretions, has highlighted the significance of the bringing the game into disrepute clauses contained in standard player contracts. Tiger Woods’ extra-marital affairs received extensive world wide media attention, and the outcome of this negative coverage was the loss of millions of dollars in sponsorship deals. This indicates that such contracts can be terminated on the basis that a sportsperson’s behaviour was having a negative impact on the sponsor’s image. It is for the same reason that sponsors have put pressure on the governing bodies of team sports to take appropriate action for off-field indiscretions. The Court of Arbitration in D’Arcy v Australian Olympic Committee, has also held that a competitor’s behaviour in an incident where criminal charges were laid, may, in itself be sufficient to bring a sport, or themselves, into disrepute, regardless of whether the competitor is later found guilty or innocent.

  • ADAM HILLS Comedian/Writer/Broadcaster/Presenter
ADAM HILLS Comedian/Writer/Broadcaster/Presenter Adam Hills is one of Australia’s best-known comedians, mainly as the five- time Gold Logie nominated host of his two hit ABC TV series – the music quiz show Spicks and Specks and his unique take on the late night talk show, Adam Hills Tonight. Already a gold-plated star in Australia, Adam has now taken the UK by storm with his own talk show on Channel Four, The Last Leg. Originally a one-off series for the 2012 London Paralympics, the Poms loved him so much it has been on air ever since! In 2020, Adam also managed to sneak home to reboot ‘Spicks’ for a group of specials airing in 2021 on the ABC. When Adam isn’t dominating the global TV landscape, he is usually somewhere in the world with a mic in hand doing his day job – globetrotting stand-up comedian. His latest show, Shoes Half Full, was performed at the 2021 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the 2021 Sydney Comedy Festival. "Hills delivers stand up so effortlessly brilliant you wonder why some comedians even get out of bed" The Guardian, London “If you cannot enjoy Adam Hills you cannot have a pulse. Four Stars” The Scotsman “Hills’s wit is incisively dry and sharp and his observations are bitingly precise” Sunday Herald Sun “[his] interaction with the audience proved so fruitful that they were reluctant to release him back on to the stage” ★★★★★The Scotsman “an Adam Hills show is always a festival highlight…with real weight, wit and purpose behind his contagious positivity” Chortle (UK) TELEVISION 2021 ABC TV Spicks & Specks

PETER HELLIAR Comedian/Writer/Director/Broadcaster/Presenter Peter Helliar has been one of Australia’s favourite comedians since his first appearance on our TV screens as a core cast member on the Logie Award winning Rove back in 1999. Pete has performed stand up for more than twenty years, selling out shows right across the country, where he makes the difficult business of being funny look dead easy. Now the Gold Logie Nominee is making people laugh four nights a week on Network Ten’s The Project, the beloved show where the news is delivered differently. A man of many talents, Peter created and co-produced two series of the award winning It’s A Date for ABC TV, and How to Stay Married for Network Ten which premiered in 2018 and will return in 2020. He has directed episodes of both shows. He is also the author of the much loved children’s book series, Franky Fish which is published by Hardie Grant/Egmont. In 2018, Frankie Fish was voted one of Australia’s Top 50 kids books in the annual Better Reading Top 50 Kids Books poll and Frankie Fish and the Sonic Suitcase was shortlisted for the ABIAs for Book of the Year for Younger Children in 2018. Peter Helliar used to be Strauchanie and his French accent has not improved. “Give Peter Helliar a stage, a microphone, some bright lights and a captive audience and he shows why he is one of the nation’s favourite comedians” Sunday Mail “Wonderful… a bizarre revelation” The Age, Melbourne “Peter Helliar makes the difficult business of being funny look dead easy.

E-Footy RECORD 17th May 2008 Issue 7 Editorial with Marty King AN HISTORIC AND BUSY TIME FOR EVERYONE IN QUEENSLAND FOOTBALL To say it has been a busy couple of weeks at AFL Queensland would be a massive understate- ment. It’s been quite extraordinary, and quite historic. First, I want to congratulate Tom McArthur on becoming the fi rst Queenslander inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Chosen in 2003 as the Umpire in the AFL Queensland Team of the Century, Tom did his State proud when he joined the likes of Kevin Sheedy and Alex Jesaulenko in the AFL spotlight in Melbourne last Thursday week. He spoke with great passion and love for Queensland football, and was a wonderful ambassador for our game. Second, I want to congratulate everyone involved with Community Football last weekend. It was a massive logistical exercise and yet it went off with barely a hitch, and was wonderfully well received by people at all levels of football. It was fantastic to see Queensland AFL players Courtenay Dempsey, Luke McGuane, Ricky Petterd and Ben Hudson fl y from Melbourne to Queensland to join the festivities, and the support we received from the entire Brisbane Lions playing list was fi rst-class. Thirdly, thanks to all who supported another successful Ladies Love AFL Lunch last Friday week at Royal on the Park. A great day was had by all. Special thanks to Lions players Simon Black, Daniel Merrett and Scott Clouston, VIP guests Sam Lukis, Melissa Lambert and Margo Bowers, and Channel 10 hosts Bill McDonald and Georgie Lewis.
