The following notes are intended to assist bidders and buyers, particularly those that are inexperienced or new to our salerooms. All of our auctions All lots sold with Propmasters are governed by our Conditions of Business incorporating the Terms of Consignment (primarily applicable to sellers), the Terms of Sale (primarily applicable to bidders and Certificate of Authenticity buyers) and any notices that are displayed in our salerooms or announced by the auctioneer at the auction. Our Conditions of Business are available for inspection at our salerooms and the Terms of Sale are printed in the back of our auction catalogues and on our web-site. Our staff will be happy to help you if there is anything in our Conditions of Business that you do not fully understand. Please make sure that you read our Terms of Sale set out in this catalogue or on our website carefully before bidding in the auction. If your bid is successful, you will be obliged to comply with our Terms of Sale. 2. Agency. As auctioneers we usually act on behalf of the seller whose identity, for reasons of confidentiality, is not normally disclosed. If you buy at auction your contract for the goods is with the seller, not with us as auctioneer. 3. Estimates. Estimates are designed to help you gauge what sort of sum might be involved for the purchase of a particular lot. Estimates may change and should not be thought of as the sale price. The lower estimate may represent the reserve price (the minimum price for which a lot may be sold) and will not be below the reserve price. Estimates do not include the buyer’s premium or VAT (where chargeable). Estimates are prepared some time before the auction and may be altered by a saleroom notice or announcement by the auctioneer before the auction of the lot. They are not definitive. 4. Buyer’s Premium. The Terms of Sale oblige you to pay a buyer’s premium at 27% inclusive of VAT on the hammer price of each lot purchased. If buying online there maybe an additional online live bidding fee payable as a percentage of the hammer price, see the terms and conditions you sign up to when bidding on the third party commercial bidding platform. 5. VAT. Items in our catalogue may be marked in the following ways: a. (†) indicates that VAT is payable by the buyer on the hammer price as well as being an element in the buyer’s premium. VAT will be chargeable at the standard rate (presently 20%). This imposition of VAT is likely to be because the seller is registered for VAT within the European Union and is not operating the Dealers Margin Scheme or because VAT is due at 20% on importation into the UK. b. (**) indicates that the lot has been imported from outside the European Union. [These lots are liable to a reduced rate of VAT (5%) on the hammer price and buyer’s premium)]. c. Lots which do not have either of the above symbols have no VAT payable on the hammer price. This is because such lots are sold using the Auctioneers’ Margin Scheme. The VAT included within the premium is not recoverable as input tax. 6. Inspection of goods by the buyer. As we act on behalf of the seller, we are dependent on information provided by the seller about their goods. We may inspect lots and will act reasonably in taking a general view about them. However, we are normally unable to carry out detailed examinations of lots to check their condition in the way a buyer would do. You will have ample opportunity to inspect the goods. You must inspect and investigate lots that you might wish to bid for. Please note carefully the exclusion of liability for the condition of lots set out in the Terms of Sale at clause 12.4. 7. Electrical goods. These are sold as “antiques” only. If you buy electrical goods for use you must ask a qualified electrician to check them for compliance with safety regulations before you use them. 8. Export of goods. If you intend to export goods you must find out: a. whether an export licence is needed; and b. if there is a prohibition on importing goods of that character e.g. because the goods contain prohibited materials such as ivory. 9. Bidding. Bidders will be required to register with us before the auction starts. We reserve the right to impose a deadline prior to the auction by which you must register or by which we must receive a commission bid. If you wish to bid on high value lots this deadline may be several days before the auction in order to allow us sufficient time to carry out the necessary checks. Lots will be invoiced to the name and address on the registration form. You will need to provide us with proof of your identity in a form acceptable to us and such other information as we may require. Please enquire in advance about our arrangements for telephone or online bidding. Please note that we may refuse to register you if you do not provide us with all the information and documentation that we ask for or at our discretion. Phone bidders must be prepared to guarantee a starting bid of at least £500 if they wish to bid by telephone. You may leave commission bids (absentee bids) with us indicating the maximum amount to be bid against a lot (excluding the buyers’ premium and/or any applicable VAT). If two buyers submit identical commission bids we may prefer the first bid received (where this can be reasonably ascertained). Ewbank’s accept secure online payments for all items by credit or debit card. Payment in person can be made by card with chip and pin, or by cash (with a limit of £5,000), bank transfers are also accepted (buyer is responsible for any international bank transfer fees). Ewbank’s are no longer able to accept cheques as payment for items purchased at auction. Please discuss with our office in advance of the sale if you plan to use other methods of payment. There is no additional charge charge for payment by debit or credit card (either made securely online or in person via a chip and pin machine). 12. Collection and storage. Please note what the Terms of Sale say about collection and storage. It is important that you pay for and collect goods promptly and within 7 days of the end of a sale. Any delay may involve you having to pay storage charges which are currently set at £5 plus VAT per lot per day. As well as a celebration of the 30th anniversary of Propmasters I wanted this auction to be a celebration of the continual successful huge growth of the hobby. As such, this special auction has been intentionally assembled to be accessible to every collector. All decades and genres of Cinema are represented, from the 1930’s to present day, by individual pieces of movie and television history that played their own special part in bringing to life what you finally see on screen.

I experienced many a childhood moment at various film studios and locations in the l970’s/1980’s, a true golden era of production in the UK. From Superman to Aliens, witnessing first-hand the magic of the movies. A Raiders of the Lost Ark Crew Cap gifted to me in 1980, aged just 10, was my first collection piece and where I pinpoint the beginning of my appreciation and passion for such artefacts. By the mid 1980’s I was actively trying to add pieces to my collection, often to the bemusement of various film personnel (and family) who just could not understand why I would want such things! Knowing I always wanted to endeavour to make it my career, immediately subsequent to college, I founded ‘Propmasters’, in conjunction with selling all types of collectable film and television memorabilia.

Today Propmasters are firmly established as one of the foremost purveyors of movie props, costumes and associated ephemera in the world.

6† Charlton Heston - An official period circa 1950’s, studio publicity photograph hand signed by the actor to the front and additionally hand signed to the back with added message. Accompanied by two similar period larger studio publicity photographs and also a picturegoer postcard. A hand-signed and personalised black & white photograph of Charlton Heston in ‘Diamond Black’. The inscription reads “Jack, is she in makeup yet?”. This was a humourous reference to Yvette Mimieux, his co-star. The Autograph is dedicated to Jack Roe, the Assistant Director from whom this piece was obtained and an official period studio publicity photograph hand signed by the actor to the front with accompanying hand signed Letter. The personalised letter is hand typed, dated Jan. 29 1968, and hand signed by the actor. £80-120

7† Ivanhoe (1952) A great helm used during the production of the film, constructed of steel with exterior detailing. Together with a separate carved wood Lion’s head finial which was added later to the helmet for alternative production use. Additionally accompanied by a steel Bascinet Helmet made for Sword Of The Valiant (1984). £150-250

9† Reg Hill Archive (1960’s onwards) - Reginald Hill was an English model-maker, art director, producer, and freelance storyboard artist who is most prominently associated with the work of Gerry Anderson. Comprising of a Supercar cast recording record album; personally issued/owned copy of the ‘Thunderbirds Television Mall Supplement’ signed on the index page; storyboard book for the Gerry Anderson produced Jif Commercial; The Last Days Of Pompeii - three different storyboard books; a quantity of printed and photographic storyboards for an unspecified Greek Mythology production; a large file of storyboards for Gunbus (Sky Bandits); miscellaneous photographs of concept artwork and the Protectors prop model car (Qty) £120-180

11† Goodbye Mr Chips (1969) ‘Headmaster’s Wife’, Anne Leggatt, costume design. The design features a full length costume design together with adjacent hat and back of coat detail and is signed in hand by the Costume Designer. Executed by hand in fine pencil and watercolours by the film’s Oscar winning Costume Designer, Julie Harris. Mounted, framed and glazed £250-350

13† Lawrence of Arabia (1962) Production paperwork collection. The production file mainly relates to the filming location for ‘Petra’. Includes a hand drawn plan/sketch of ‘Petra’, 22 x 17inches, which details various points such as ‘the rocky foothills in this area are a white to ochre colour’, 16 different 10 x 8inch b & w (some with hand annotations on the back); 27 different 8 x 7inch b & w photos; 8 different 6 x 4inch b & w photos; 46 page story outline (3 pages loose); ‘Ameropa Pictures Ltd’ unused letterhead; 3 page set list with hand annotated red highlights; card file detailing contents plus London office address. The photographs were obviously for reference purposes and are very indicative of the film’s beautiful cinematography. £250-350

15† Batman (1966) A group of autographs of various stars from the television series. Comprising of Burt Ward ‘Robin’, Frank Gorshin, ‘The Riddler’ and Julie Newmar ‘Catwoman’, signed photographs. Together with Eatha Kitt ‘Catwoman’ and Yvone Craig, ‘Batgirl’ mounted signatures with photograph. £80-120

16† Star Trek (1966) Central eight main cast autographs from the original television series, William Shatner, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, DeForest Kelley, Majel Barrett, Nichelle Nichols, Leonard Nimoy and George Takei. Mounted and framed with a colour photograph of the cast. £250-350

18† Khartoum (1966) A group of four different original hand drawn military costume designs for Peter Arne as ‘Major Kitchener’, Edward Underdown as ‘Hicks Pasha’, Nigel Green as ‘Lord Wolseley’ and a British Infantryman. The designs feature a full length costume design together with attached costume swatches. Executed by hand in fine pencil and watercolour by the film’s Costume Designer, Bill Carman. Individually mounted, framed and glazed. £500-800

20† Lock Up Your Daughters (1969) The signature costume worn by Christopher Plummer in his starring role as ‘Lord Foppington’. The costume can be clearly seen worn by the character throughout the first half of the film. Beautifully tailored to realistically emulate a period waistcoat and still complete with all it’s original ornate buttons. The interior retains it’s original Costumiers tag detailing the actor’s name. A highly identifiable costume that additionally featured heavily on original promotional posters, compounding it’s featured importance. £200-400

23† A Man For All Seasons (1966) A Tudor style Head Dress unidentified in the final edit but made for use by Susannah York as ‘Margaret’. The head dress is decorated with lace and faux pearls and retains the original costumier tag. Accompanied by an additional costumier card hang tag and costumier storage bag, both detailing actress and production. £80-120

27† A Man For All Seasons (1966) A Tudor style floor length dress worn by Susannah York as ‘Margaret’. Used in several scenes to include the characters initial appearance on screen. Together with costumier card hang tag and costume bag. £400-600

29† Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) Original production used Script. Dated June 1967, the 222 page Script includes blue coloured revision pages. £400-600

31† Spartacus (1960) A Roman Helmet and Tunic. Both helmet and tunic feature embossed circular lion head motifs. The interior of the leather Tunic retains the original costumier printed name and identified as ‘extra Spartacus’. As well as clear use in the film, this particular costume was interestingly additionally worn by one of the Roman soldiers greeting guests in the foyer of the film’s London Premiere. £500-800

36† The Black Hole (1979) Miniature full figure ‘Humanoid’, standing pose. The miniature was obtained directly from the Walt Disney Company and accompanied by a Disney certificate of authenticity. The certificate states that the model “... was used in a window display in Disneyland’s Main Street USA to help promote the 1979 release of Disney’s The Black Hole”. The detailed figure features a cloth costume over a hard rubber type body form with detailed arms and boots. There are two metal protruding rods from the base of each boot to facilitate fixing to a set base. The hooded head features the reflective face mask with small hole detailing. The head has become detached from the body and the face mask has suffered cracking to the lower half. £700-1000

38† Blue Peter (1970’s) From Britain’s longest running Children’s television programme of all time comes this Presenter’s Hard Hat. The Edelrid branded safety hard hat features the iconic Blue Peter emblem to the front and to the back as well as retaining it’s original BBC wardrobe label to the interior. Blue Peter presenters often found themselves in situations where such Hard Hat’s were a necessity and as such is a piece that is highly associated with the show. £80-120

40† Cromwell (1970) Richard Harris as ‘Cromwell’ costume design. Full length costume design, signed and titled in hand by the Designer. Executed by hand in fine pencil and pen by the film’s Costume Designer, Nino Novarese, with two different costume swatch fabrics attached. There are no charges on debit or credit card payments. 41† Capricorn One (1978) Advance Campaign Set for the 1978 movie starring Elliot Gould and James Brolin. Such campaign sets were used to promote the film to prospective distributors/buyers, and produced in very low numbers by ITC Entertainment, the producers of the movie. Consists of an oversized publicity campaign book of high gloss card, a synopsis of card, a production note folder containing various details about the film and it’s cast/crew plus a selection of fifteen different high quality 10 x 8 inch black and white stills with descriptive labels on reverse. £80-120

42† Alien (1979) Two different styles of lobby card large sets with eight different cards per set, a single chestburster large cinepix lobby card, three standard sized lobby cards and a synopsis, together with five different press stills for Aliens. £80-120

45† Gerry Andersons Space 1999 (1975) A quantity of vintage official Fan Cards depicting the characters ‘John Koenig’ and ‘Helena Russell’ with the printed signatures of the actors, Martin Landau and Barbara Bain (11). ‘Alan Carter’, Nick Tate; ‘Maya’, Catherine Schell (2). ‘Tony Verdeschi’, Tony Anholt (6), the reverse of the cards display the Space 1999 logo and ITC/ATV information. Originally these were exclusively sent out to fans writing in to the show during it’s original broadcasting in the 1970’s. Together with two framed displays containing three different cards in each. £150-250

46† Flesh Gordon (1974) An original final poster artwork design for the cult classic science fiction comedy. The two piece design features the logo and the artwork separately, each having clear acetate overlays. Both artworks are accomplished in hand, mounted on artists white backing board with protective tissue sheet overlays. The artwork can be seen continually used in numerous poster releases right through to subsequent video releases for the film and as such is highly recognizable. £400-600

49† The Three Musketeers (1973) Costume made for Faye Dunaway in her co- starring role as ‘Milady’. The costume can be seen when ‘Milady’ accompanies the ‘Duke Of Buckingham’ (Simon Ward) to his bedroom. The Gown has been subject to alteration for subsequent alternative use, most notably with the addition of pearl detailing to the chest and neck line plus pearl tipped pink coloured fabric tassels to the shoulders. Exhibits production wear and signs of age, particularly to the lower and inner hem lines but overall still presents very well. Accompanied by the Costumiers wardrobe card hang tag detailing the actress and production. £250-350

50† NASA Astronaut Space Suit - An early 1970’s period Spacesuit from an unidentified production. The suit features metal tipped fingers on the gloves, NASA and American flag insignia and wooden roundel chest air valve detailing. £250-350

52† Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) A formal Naval Service Jacket made for Eric Porter in his role as ‘Premier Stolypin’, as seen during the Royal Train and subsequent Assassination at the Opera sequences. Retaining original buttons and interior costumier tag detailing the actor, together with additional costumier card hang tag. £80-120

53† Prince Regent (1979) A dress made for Susanna York as ‘Mrs Fitzherbert’, Retains it’s original type detailed interior costumier tag and additional costumier card hang tag. Together with a high waist skirt from the same production. £80-120

Sean Connery can be seen wearing such a style of Jacket throughout the majority of the movie and as such it is highly and instantly identifiable. Images of Sean Connery wearing such a Jacket featured heavily in the film’s poster and publicity release campaign. Custom made for production, complete with interior sewn in Costumier label with typed detailing of actor name and production details. £800-1200 VAT on the hammer price is payable at 20% on all marked lots in this catalogue. The Jacket has had the collar recovered in a suede like material post production for subsequent alternative use by the Costumier. Retains the original Costumier tag to the inside detailing the actor and scene use. £250-350

56† Gerry Fisher Collection - Cinematographer (1947 - 2016) Gerry Fisher’s personal Coat, Body Warmer and monogrammed camera holdall. 329† 102 Dalmatians (2000) Life size animatronic hero Dalmatian puppy of the lead character ‘Oddball’. ‘Oddball’ is the main starring Dalmatian in the film, having the problem of not developing spots, hence this puppy is all in white. This would have been used during production within group puppy sequences. Such stand-in pups were either ‘solid’ or animatronic, like this version. The puppy is beautifully and realistically detailed, right down to the individual claws on each paw. The Front paws feature two slightly protruding metal rods and there are also screw holes to the plastic footplates of the rear paws. Originally the animatronics would have given movement to the neck and possibly slight movement within the body. EWBANK AUCTIONEERS Chris Ewbank founded Ewbank’s in 1990 selling out of the Hog’s Back Hotel and in 1994 we acquired our present salerooms, the Burnt Common Auction Rooms, which are situated just off the A3, under ten minutes away from junction 10 on the M25. It is a very prominent site in an out of town location giving easy access and acres of parking. Woking main line station is 4 miles away with trains to Waterloo (23 minutes).

Throughout our time in Guildford, we have had the privilege of advising thousands of clients on the valuation and sale of Antiques and Fine Art and have conducted well in excess of two hundred Antiques and Fine Arts auctions and five hundred monthly Collectors sales. When we started in 1990 we held six auctions a year and we are now expecting to hold more than 50 auctions in the next twelve months.

We always seek to maintain the highest standards, adhering to the principles of probity and ethics of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Chris is a Chartered Arts and antiques surveyor), and the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers, of which we are Members. Most of our new clients come to us on recommendation, from professional advisers or existing clients.

As the costs of selling by auction in Central London have rocketed we have benefitted from the general trend in recent years for more important items to be sold outside the capital. Catalogues are produced and circulated to prospective purchasers by post and E-mail and full details, including digital illustration of all lots for sale are included on the internet. We estimate that we now with four regular photographers on our staff take in excess of 50,000 images per annum. Buyers are attracted from all over the world.

We have invested heavily in technology in recent years with both new back office systems and website. This gives a far greater global marketing ability. We see this as being the way forward for the future and it will maximise our ability to achieve the best possible prices for our clients. Since our first auction published on the internet that side of our business has risen markedly so that in the last 12 months we have had 4.25 million pages views on our website in the last 12 months up from 2 million two years ago. Recognising the importance of live internet bidding in today’s market we have for the last two years been operating our own live bidding platform Ewbank’s Live and regularly report over 50% of our sales being to on line bidders. In one specialist sale recently over 90% of sales were transacted on line. With others we have now also set up a new search hub and bidding platform www.theauctionroom.com which saves buyers up to 6% as against other commercial platforms.

Ewbank’s has grown from humble beginnings holding six sales a year, to the position that we hold today, with our own Salerooms, bidding platform and some fifty specialist sales a year. Turnover in our first year in 1990 was approximately £250,000 and just one of our quarterly sales now easily exceeds that figure. Building refurbishments works have doubled the size of our floor space in recent years to accommodate the sale volumes. We have for some years now been able to claim that we are Surrey and Hampshire’s premier antique fine art and specialist auctioneers.

Chris Ewbank has taken a very active part in the leadership of the profession within the UK. He has been a member of the Fine Arts Advisory Panel of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Chairman of its Art and Antiques Professional Group. He was also an elected Member of its International Governing Council (the highest decision making body in the Institution) from 2005 to 2013. He joined the Committee of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers & Valuers in 1994 (he first became a member in 1982), and was Chairman from 2000-2007. He is on the Executive Committee of the British Art Market Federation and was one of the first to join the new City of London Company of Arts Scholars.
