There will be no quick fix to the problem of sea lettuce in St Aubin’s Bay, an expert has warned The annual presence of the bright green algae, which blooms in summer and leaves inches deep deposit along the entire stretch of beach, is bad for business and the environment. The individual leaves look like lettuce and it tends to thrive in moderate levels of nutrient pollution. In areas where there is a bloom of sea lettuce, sunlight is unable to reach submerged vegetation, often killing it. And when sea lettuce dies, bacteria feeding on it use up high amounts of oxygen in the water which can drive away other forms of sea life. Outfall from the Island’s ageing sewage works in Bellozanne Valley pours into the bay and the effects of that are about to be researched. Transport and Technical Services, which has responsibility for keeping beaches clean, and the Environment Department have jointly commissioned water quality experts to prepare a report. The findings could impact on the construction of the new sewage plant. Sea lettuce is a common problem around the world, but exactly what causes it to bloom is not yet fully understood according to visiting expert Dr Kieran Conlan of Cascade Consulting. He says that generally other countries just leave the seaweed on the beach. There was no solution found that could be easily transferred to Jersey, he told beachside businesses. So, is there anything the algae can be used for? Apparently, like lettuce grown on land, it can be used in salads and soups. It can also be used to make ice-cream, other food products, and medicine!

For parents, the birth of a child is an intensely special moment. While most will proudly leave hospital within days complete with newborn, for some mums and dads it’s the start of an anxious and often scary time. Babies that are born prematurely, or with complications, will often remain in hospital, cared for by the Special Care Baby Unit, or SCBU. Little Miracles is a recently established local charity that aims to provide support for those parents. Les Clefs found out more from its chairperson, St Peter Parishioner Cirsty de Gruchy-Wilson .

As is the way with many new charities, a personal What goes into the experience motivated Cirsty de Gruchy-Wilson to set up memory boxes was Little Miracles. Letter from St St Peter’s Church Diary Peter’s Church Sat 6 to Sun 14 Dec 10th Annual Christmas Tree Festiv al (entry free with donations) - 9.00am to 7.00pm Dear Parishioners, Sat 6 Dec Christmas Concert with the ‘ Usual Suspects ’ In the paraphrased words of brass band and Les Conteurs choir - 7.30pm Victor Meldrew ‘I couldn’t believe Mon 8 Dec St Peter’s School Carol Service in church - 6.30pm it!’ The other day my wife and I were watching the final episode Thu 11 Dec St George’s School Carol Service in church - 6.00pm of Downton Abbey. Being on ITV Sun 14 Dec Christingle Carol Service in church - 5.00pm you have the adverts to endure, what I couldn’t believe was that Wed 24 Dec Crib Service in churc h - 5.00pm virtually every advert was for Midnight Mass - 11.30pm Christmas – and this was nearly Christmas Day Said Eucharist - 8.00am two months before Christmas Day. Family Eucharist - 10.30am

In so many ways, how sad – no, not that Wed 31 Dec New Year Eucharist - 10.00am I was watching Downton Abbey and not Sun 11 Jan Plough Sunday service - 10.30am that I was shouting at the adverts. No, how sad that we are confronted with Christmas so early. Understandably the adverts were all aimed at trying to get us to part with our hard earned money. They were completely commercial and secular. One advert did have the subject of love at its heart – the love of a boy for his pet toy. However, this really still missed the point of Christmas itself. It is the celebration of the Son of God, the birth of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Of course love is at the heart of the real Christmas – it is God’s love that was so great that he gave his only son to all of us – a real and totally unselfish present. Our giving of presents is a simple expression of love for someone close or special, recognising the love that God has for each and every one of us in our lives. Of course grumpy old men, like me, will always get cross with the adverts! Actually some of them are very funny. On the other hand, however we celebrate Christmas this year, don’t forget the real story. The love of God for us. As someone once said, ‘Let’s not forget to put Christ back in Christmas’. May I wish you, your family and all those that you love, a very blessed Christmas and Happy New Year.
