  • Mystic America All the Secret Histories Revealed!
Mystic America All the Secret Histories Revealed! Joe Milutis It’s 1878 in New York City, and the newly formed Theosophical Society of America is foundering. Blavatsky and Olcott, leaders of the movement for a few short years, decide to travel to India in order to bring back something or someone––a teacher, a text, and attitude––that would help them create a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern thought. The movement is demoralized, fragmented. They leave it in the hands of Abner Doubleday, who claimed that while fighting in the Civil War, he discovered what karma was, and this awakening allowed him to survive the fire of battle unscathed. Doubleday, now faced with a dwindling till thanks to Blavatsky and Olcott’s junket had to come up with a cheap way to communicate some kind of stop-gap mystical truths to the Society members who remained––a motley group of anarchists, mathematicians, heiresses, and erstwhile mediums. Most know Doubleday not as the interim president of the Theosophical Society of America, but as the inventor of baseball. Yet many do not know how baseball was actually born, that it was precisely the fruit of the society’s misdirection and that, before it became the American pastime, baseball rivalries blossomed between the Manhattanville Swedenbourgians and the Harlaem Theosophists, the East Side Bakuninists and the Hudson Nihilists. A precocious group of neighborhood boys played anytime against this bookish bunch. They were all at least half the age of any other team’s player and called themselves the Brooklyn Dodgers––not so called, as is commonly held, because they dodged streetcars, but because they were forever dodging the ideological proselytizing in which all the other teams so passionately engaged while waiting to bat.

It is not inappropriate. 1 Doesn't bother me, it's OK. 1 Doesn't bother me. Already enthuzism seems to be fading until the next attack. 1 Don't follow baseball that much, but I like to watch once and a while 1 Don't think that it really harms anyone by doing it, so why not, if there are people who enjoy it and/or believe it is important. Frankly I am neither in favor or against the song being removed from the seventh inning stretch. For me personally the song, which holds no value in my mind, has no effect on me. However, since many are able to validate an obligatory and ritualistic need to be patriotic the song should remain. For better of for worse, God Bless America helps many feel better about 1 themselves. I love my county and do not need a song to prove it. 1 I don't care that much one way or the other. 1 I don't pay all that much attention to it 1 I dont go to baseball games-boring 1 I have no problem with the song being played. it lasts 60 seconds. I wouldn't care if it was part of the game or not part of the game. Baseball is America's national pastime, so its some what fitting.

  • Deep Ecology and Contemporary Writing of the American West
All These Rivers (A Collection of Poetry) & Beyond the Temple, Beyond the Pond: Deep Ecology and Contemporary Writing of the American West Kris Johnson This thesis is submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of Newcastle University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics July 2016 ii Abstract This thesis comprises a collection of poetry, All These Rivers, and a critical dissertation Beyond the Temple, Beyond the Pond: Deep Ecology and Contemporary Literature of the American West, which collectively explore the relationship between the literature of the American West and Deep Ecology. All These Rivers engages with the themes and tenets of Deep Ecology in its methods and principles of construction. It considers my relationship to the landscape of home, the Pacific Northwest, and how it is maintained and intensified by the process of writing my experiences into existence during a period of geographic isolation. The collection’s title responds to the many rivers in this region, but also alludes to the collection’s themes of origins, direction and cycles. The content and structure of this body of work demonstrate how nature and natural processes not only shape the landscape, but imprint upon the self. Voicing my complex relationship with this geography through the process of writing, re-mapping and recounting experiences, this collection seeks to collapse the distance between vast and intimate geographies, reconcile the wild and the civilized, and to reunify myself with home terrain. The critical component provides a context for reading this collection of poems and further explores of the relationship between Deep Ecology and contemporary Western American literature through critical readings of Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm and Ellen Meloy’s The Last Cheater’s Waltz.
