They are engaged in farming and livestock raising. Ganguela is a collective term which was used by the Portuguese to classify a variety of highly diverse ethnic groups living mainly in eastern Angola. Nyaneka- Khumbi South of the Ovimbundu and Ganguela – mainly in the middle reaches of the Kunene basin – live several groups of the “Nyaneka- Khumbi”, a general term introduced by the Portuguese to classify a number of smaller ethnic groups. Like the classification of "Ganguela" it is quite controversial. The Nyaneka and Khumbi are mainly livestock herders and agriculturalists. Like all other major groups, they consist of different sub- groups including the Ngambwe (also Ovangambwe) who are the main inhabitants of the Lower Kunene basin, together with the Himba and Zemba (see Herero- speaking Pastoralists). Oshiwambo- speaking People Another group of Bantu- origin within the Lower Kunene basin - on both the Namibian and Angolan side of the river - are the Oshiwambo- speaking people, in colonial times often referred to as Ovambo or Owambo . They occupy a vast territory in northern Namibia and the southeast of Angola. In Namibia they are the single biggest ethnic group. Their main livelihood is agriculture and livestock raising. Other economic activities include for example fishing and handicrafts. Only a small section of Oshiwambo- speakers have settled within the Kunene River basin. Herero- speaking Pastoralists The (semi-)arid regions of the Lower Kunene basin in north- western Namibia and south- western Angola are mainly populated by Herero- speaking pastoralists raising cattle, sheep and goats. Some of the Herero- speaking ethnic groups also cultivate land (Duarte de Carvalho 2002, Bollig 1997). Himba One Herero- speaking group living in the lower basin on both sides of the river are the Himba (speaking the Herero dialect Dhimba or Zemba) who became internationally famous during the Epupa dam debate in the 1990s (see also Hydropolitics in the Basin ). The Himba are semi- nomadic cattle herders who also breed sheep and goats. Young men will move the cattle between dispersed cattle posts. Other members of the family remain in permanent villages or only move at certain times of the year. At the driest times, when circumstances do not allow use of inland water points, some households migrate to the Kunene River to obtain water and grazing (see also Livestock Farming ) (ERM 2009, Bollig 1997). Hakavona & Zemba Other important Herero- speaking groups in the Lower Kunene basin on the Angolan side are the Hakavona and Zemba (also named Ovazemba or Zimba). Non- Bantu- speaking Groups There are three major non- bantu groups living in the Kunene River basin: In addition to the Khoisan speakers and the Thwa, Kwisi and Kwepe, one can find Europeans as well as people of “mixed race”. The Khoi and the San are the earliest known inhabitants of southern Africa. Source: Garner 2009 ( click to enlarge ) Khoisan Single locations in the Kunene basin – mainly in Huíla Province – are inhabited by small groups of ! Kung- speaking San. The San live within certain territories with no fixed settlements and earn their livelihoods mainly by hunting, gathering and livestock raising. They also cultivate land, partially within dependent labour relations with their Bantu neighbours. To know more about the San, please click on the video on the right- hand side. Europeans and Mixed Population Two numerically small groups in the Kunene basin are Europeans and people of “mixed race”, called coloureds in Namibia and mestiços in Angola. In the wake of decolonisation both groups have strongly declined in number in the Kunene River basin. Indeed, one cannot even talk of groups, as only individuals live in the basin, particularly in Lubango. There are also some Cubans who have stayed for personal reasons after the general withdrawal of the Cuban troops from Angola at the end of the cold war. In recent years a certain number of Namibians and South Africans have come to Lubango. A growing Chinese population has also to be mentioned. Next: Traditional Knowledge .

Introduction Portuguese explorers first reached the Congo Basin in the late 15th century, beginning a linguistic and cultural presence that in some regions was to last for 500 years. In other areas of Africa, Portuguese-based creoles rapidly developed, while for several centuries pidginized Portuguese was a major lingua franca for the Atlantic slave trade, and has been implicated in the formation of many Afro- American creoles. The original Portuguese presence in southwestern Africa was confined to limited missionary activity, and to slave trading in coastal depots, but in the late 19th century, Portugal reentered the Congo-Angola region as a colonial power, committed to establishing permanent European settlements in Africa, and to Europeanizing the native African population. In the intervening centuries, Angola and the Portuguese Congo were the source of thousands of slaves sent to the Americas, whose language and culture profoundly influenced Latin American varieties of Portuguese and Spanish. Despite the key position of the Congo-Angola region for Ibero-American linguistic development, little is known of the continuing use of the Portuguese language by Africans in Congo-Angola during most of the five centuries in question. Only in recent years has some attention been directed to the Portuguese language spoken non-natively but extensively in Angola and Mozambique (Gonçalves 1983). In Angola, the urban second-language varieties of Portuguese, especially as spoken in the squatter communities of Luanda, have been referred to as Musseque Portuguese, a name derived from the KiMbundu term used to designate the shantytowns themselves.

    People, Cattle and Land - Transformations of Pastoral Society Michael Bollig and Jan-Bart Gewald Everybody living in Namibia, travelling to the country or working in it has an idea as to who the Herero are. In Germany, where most of this book has been compiled and edited, the Herero have entered the public lore of German colonialism alongside the East African askari of German imperial songs. However, what is remembered about the Herero is the alleged racial pride and conservatism of the Herero, cherished in the mythico-histories of the German colonial experiment, but not the atrocities committed by German forces against Herero in a vicious genocidal war. Notions of Herero, their tradition and their identity abound. These are solid and ostensibly more homogeneous than visions of other groups. No travel guide without photographs of Herero women displaying their out-of-time victorian dresses and Herero men wearing highly decorated uniforms and proudly riding their horses at parades. These images leave little doubt that Herero identity can be captured in photography, in contrast to other population groups in Namibia. Without a doubt, the sight of massed ranks of marching Herero men and women dressed in scarlet and khaki, make for excellent photographic opportunities. Indeed, the populär image of the Herero at present appears to depend entirely upon these impressive displays. Yet obviously there is more to the Herero than mere picture post-cards. Herero have not been passive targets of colonial and present-day global image- creators. They contributed actively to the formulation of these images and have played on them in order to achieve political aims and create internal conformity and cohesion.

    The Creole Elite and the Rise of Angolan Proto-Nationalism: 1880-1910 Jacopo Corrado Abstract: The main purpose of this essay is to define the peculiarities of Angolan urban society and trace its evolution during the second half of the nineteenth century, a lapse of time marked by relative freedom—due to the economic crisis affecting Portugal from the definitive abolition of slavery and to the social and artistic progressive reformer impulse pro- moted by the Generation of 1870. This made possible the establishment in Luanda of lively journalistic activity and the production of a literary corpus—principally written by traders, soldiers, public officers, and landowners, born in Africa and tied both to their European and African origins, which witnessed the growth of a feeling of dissatisfaction destined to culminate in a heterogeneous set of open claims for autonomy or even independence. This article investigates a segment of Angolan history and literature with which non-Portuguese-speaking readers are generally not familiar, for its main purpose is to define the features and the literary production of what are conventionally called Creole elites, whose contribution to the early manifes- tations of dissatisfaction towards colonial rule was patent between 1880 and 1910, a period of renewed Portuguese commitment to its African colonies, but also of unrealised ambitions, economic crisis and socio-political upheaval in Angola and in Portugal itself. The roots of Angola, however, reach far into the past. When Portuguese caravels arrived in the Congo River estuary in the late 15th century, independent African polities dotted this vast region. Some people lived in populous, hierarchical states such as the Kingdom of Kongo, but most lived in smaller political entities centered on lineage-village settlements. The Portuguese colony of Angola grew out of a settlement established at Luanda Bay in 1576. From its inception, Portuguese Angola existed to profit from the transatlantic slave trade, which became the colony’s economic foundation for the next three centuries.
