After graduation from the latter institution, he took further composition courses with Nikolai Miaskovsky at the Moscow Conservatory. He composed orchestral, vocal and chamber works. His other Symphonies are Nos. 1 (1962), 3 in B flat minor (1967) and 4 (1969). Symphony No. 2 in E minor (1964) Valentin Katayev/Byelorussian State Symphony Orchestra ( + Vagner: Suite for Symphony Orchestra) MELODIYA D 024909-10 (LP) (1969) VASIF ADIGEZALOV (1935-2006, AZERBAIJAN) Born in Baku, Azerbaijan. He studied under Kara Karayev at the Azerbaijan Conservatory and then joined the staff of that school. His compositional catalgue covers the entire range of genres from opera to film music and works for folk instruments. Among his orchestral works are 4 Symphonies of which the unrecorded ones are Nos. 1 (1958) and 4 "Segah" (1998). Tongyeong Festival Orchestra European Tour 2017 Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Isang Yun (1917-1995) 23 September to 2 October 2017 Program Maurice Ravel: Le Tombeau du Couperin Isang Yun: Violin Concerto No. 3 (1992) Isang Yun: Harmonia (1974) Maurice Ravel: Ma Mère l´oye (Ballett) Clara Jumi Kang Violin Tongyeong Festival Orchestra Heinz Holliger Conductor Inquiries: Tongyeong International Music Foundation www.timf.org [email protected] Tongyeong Festival Orchestra Following the example of Lucerne, Switzerland, Tongyeong Festival Orchestra (TFO) was created to enhance the musical spectrum of the Tongyeong International Music Festival, and to serve as an artistic ambassador for Tongyeong City, a UNESCO Creative City of Music. Since the festival’s first edition in 2002, TIMF has been striving to assemble highly qualified musicians in order to build its own ensemble. In 2011, then Alexander Liebreich initiated a collaboration of musicians from Ensemble TIMF with the Munich Chamber Orchestra, thus for the first time building a truly international Festival Orchestra. From then on, the group was assembled annually, performing at home and abroad. At the opening of the new Tongyeong Concert Hall in 2014, TFO was again led by Alexander Liebreich and included musicians from Ensemble TIMF, Polish National Radio Orchestra of Katowice, and from major international symphony orchestras, such as NDR Hamburg, Munich Philharmonic, Kremerata Baltica, Osaka Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. In 2015, TFO truly became a musical centerpiece of the Tongyeong International Music Festival. Following the festival theme „Voyages“, the orchestra went abroad to play in Japan and China. Performing together with violinist Gidon Kremer and German conductor Christoph Poppen, the orchestra consisted of musicians mainly from Korea, Japan and China to create a musical bridge between the three countries. -

The Society was founded in 1926 and, during the past 92 years, has undergone a number of permutations which were the result of the many political and social shifts over the 20th Century. Originally, the Society exclusively helped children of Russian decent outside of Russia who were victims of the Russian Revolution and World Wars I & II. Eventually Europe, followed by South America, became self-sufficient and the Society refocused its efforts on helping children in Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. For the past two decades, the Society has devoted all of its aid to Russia. The Society’s primary activities include: pediatric maxillofacial surgery in partnership with the Russian Aid Foundation; a successful college scholarship program currently supporting 157 students; assisting vetted orphanages; and hosting an an- nual Christmas “Yelka” party where over 1,000 orphans from across Russia celebrate an unforgettable day in Moscow. -

MUSICAL CONTENTS AND SYMBOLIC INTERPRETATION IN SOFIA GUBAIDULINA’S “TWO PATHS: A DEDICATION TO MARY AND MARTHA” DMA DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of Requirements for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Young-Mi Lee, M.Ed. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Document Committee: Approved by Professor Jan Radzynski, Adviser Professor Donald Harris Professor Margarita Mazo Adviser Music Graduate Program ABSTRACT Sofia Gubaidulina has been known for using symbolic devices in her music to express her Christian belief. Two paths: A Dedication to Mary and Martha for two violas and orchestra (1998) effectively represents Gubaidulina’s musical aesthetic which is based on the idea of dichotomy. In the wide stretch over various genres, many pieces reflect her dual worldview that implies an irreconcilable conflict between the holy God and the worldly human. She interprets her vision of contradictory attributes between divinity and mortality, one celestial and the other earthly, by creating and applying musical symbols. Thus, Gubaidulina employs the concept of binary opposition as many of her works involve extreme contrasts, conflicts, and tension. In this document I will analyze the musical content in detail. Then I will examine the symbolic devices in terms of dichotomy, which explains how Gubaidulina uses the same musical metaphor in her works and how she employs and develops the musical devices to represent her religious vision. He studied composition at the Tashkent Conservatory with Rumil Vildanov and Boris Zeidman. He later became a professor of composition and orchestration of the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan as well as chairman of the Composers' Union of Uzbekistan. He has composed prolifically in most genres including opera, orchestral, chamber and vocal works.
