Agnus Dei: # 375 SIGNIFICANCE of BOWING

A bow signifies reverence and honor shown to the names or event being mentioned. We are to do the following:

1) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons (the Trinity) are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated. 2) A bow of the body (a profound bow) is made during the Creed with the words (and by the Holy Spirit…and became man—highlighted in red words in the Creed). —General Instruction to the Roman Missal, #275

p. 6 Co-Cathedral Music Music for the Third Sunday of Lent

The music heard on Sunday morning this weekend includes two seemingly disparate themes, German Chorales (hymns) and an Af- rican-American Spiritual. Our music department recently taught a workshop on hymnody for teachers, exploring the very Catholic nature of this musical genre. Attendees discovered that hymn texts and tunes by definition have a connection to the (common) peo- ple; many old tunes in German retained today had their first origins in Gregorian chant and Latin. The choir sings today a selection by Johannes Brahms and the organ prelude is an exploration of chorales set by Brahms near the end of his life. Today’s opening hymn is from one of those tunes - Passion Chorale, or Herzlich tut mich verlangen. In addition, February is Black History Month. Our offering of Steal Away, though American, retains the theme as these German texts. Here escaping earthly persecution is a very real and less metaphorical need. Texts (translated) are listed below:

Christian Meditation Wed. Evenings at 6:30 PM Parish Library On the first floor of the Cathedral Centre.

Christian Meditation is not a study or discussion, but a weekly meeting of Christians coming together to silence their minds/ hearts and listen to the quiet voice of God speaking. After a brief, pre-selected Christian message, participants meditate in silence for about 20 minutes. Meditation is an ancient form of Christian prayer practiced by the saints, and religious communities throughout the world. Did you have a powerful en- counter with Jesus on an ACTS retreat? p. 14 Ash WednesdayHow to Go & to Lenten Confession... Schedule May the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of all the saints, whatever good you do and suffering you endure, heal your sins, help you grow in holiness, and reward you with eternal life. Go in peace. – Rite of Penance, no. 93

1) PREPARATION: Before going to confession [You may go face-to-face or behind the screen—your choice.], take some time to prepare. Begin with prayer, and reflect on your life since your last confession. How have you—in your thoughts, words, and actions— neglected to live Christ’s commands to “love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind,” and to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mt 22:37, 39)? As a help with this “examination of con- science,” you might review the Ten Commandments or the Beatitudes (Ex 20:2-17; Dt 5:6-21; Mt 5:3-10; or Lk 6:20-26).

2) GREETING and the SIGN of the CROSS: The priest may welcome you. Together, you and the priest will make the Sign of the Cross. The priest may read or summarize a Scripture passage. You may then begin your confession with these or similar words: “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been [give days, months, or years] since my last confession.”

3) CONFESSION: Confess all your sins to the priest. If you are unsure what to say, ask the priest for help. When you are finished, conclude with these or similar words: “I am sorry for all my sins, including the ones I cannot remember.”

4) PENANCE: The priest will propose an act of penance. The penance might be prayer, a work of mercy, or an act of charity. He might also counsel you on how to better live a Christian life.

5) ACT of CONTRITION: After the priest has conferred your penance, pray an Act of Contrition, expressing sorrow for your sins and resolving to sin no more. A suggested Act of Contrition (though there are other appropriate versions) is: My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. Amen. (Rite of Penance, no. 45)

6) ABSOLUTION: The priest will extend his hand(s) toward/over your head and pray the prayer of absolution. You respond, “Amen.”

7) PRAISE: The priest will usually praise the mercy of God and will invite you to do the same. For example, the priest may say, “Give thanks to the Lord for he is good.” And your response would be, “His mercy endures for ever” (Rite of Pen- ance, no. 47).

8) DISMISSAL: The priest will conclude the sacrament, often saying, “Go in peace” or another dismissal.

If it has been a while since your last confession, remember, “Do not fear” (Is 41:10). The priest will help guide you. Feel free to take this how to guide with you into the confessional! As Catholics we take up the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving every year. These practices help us to remember the merciful love and compassion that God shows all people. Participat- ing in these practices, we journey toward repentance with our com- munity and God and toward the celebration of the Paschal Mystery of our Lord. We do not make this journey alone. The whole Church prepares for the celebration and together, along with those who are preparing to enter the Church at the Easter Vigil, we try to live more faithfully to God's call to be merciful, loving, and compassionate to those around us. Our acts of love through sacrifice and prayer are a tangible witness of God's love to those around us.

1. Spend some time in reflection about why you choose to partici- pate in the prayer, fasting, and almsgiving of the Church during this Lenten season. Next time someone asks you why you aren't eating “He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me the chicken on Friday in the lunchroom, you'll be better prepared to always; everything I have is yours. But now we share your belief in God who is merciful and compassionate. must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother “ was dead and has come to life again; he was lost H 2. Share with someone what your Lenten practices will be this and has been found.’” (Lk 15: 31-32) e year. This is not to brag about how good you are at following Christ, rather, it allows us to each have something of an "accountability partner" so that we can strive to be a more credible witness to our faith.
