According to Dr. Allison Alberts, an ecologist with the San Diego Zoo and lead researcher in Cuba, among GTMO's many wildlife species, "The Cuban iguana is one of the largest, undoubtedly the most visible and cer- tainly the most charismatic. It seems that no one completes a tour of duty at 'GTMO' without getting to know these prehistoric-looking giants." Alberts added, "Unfortunately, outside the safety of the fenceline, Cuban iguanas are rapidly disappearing as a result of habitat loss, hunting and predation by introduced mammals." Hospital offers EDIS services Sailor raises right hand in GTMO

By Donna Hudson Coakley Early ChildhoodSpecialist Educator The Educational and Developmental Intervention Services (EDIS) Pro- gram is designed to provide early intervention and medical services to eligible military and civilian children and their families in GTMO. The EDIS program is in compliance with and meets the requirements outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Department of Defense (DoD) guidance. The program assists children from birth to age three with developmental concerns. Children with developmental delays or the high probability of delays in areas such as speech, physical skills, cognitive skills, social/emotional skills or self-care skills are eligible for EDIS services. The offered services include but are not limited to: family training, counseling and home visits, special instruction, service coordination, early identification and assess- ment, social work services, speech pathology and audiology and occupa- tional therapy. The hospital EDIS program works with the school system to transition the child into the preschool program. The program also as- sists families who are moving to a new duty station to locate services in that area that would benefit their child. These services are provided in the child's natural environment, which includes the home or day care center.
