Commencement This Order shall come into operation on 1 September 1998. 2. Specified exclusive routes The routes set out in Schedule 1 ("exclusive routes") are specified as the routes on which the New World First Bus Services Limited may operate. 3.     Bills Committee on Road Traffic Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2000 Speed Limits Introduction This paper reports on – (a) the outcome of the Administration’s consideration of suggestions made by the public in 1999 and 2000 concerning the review of speed limits of certain road sections; (b) the standards and existing policy on the provision of regulatory signs showing the maximum speed limit of roads and other warning signs showing the change of speed limit; and (c) the breakdown of enforcement statistics on speeding offences in 1997 – 1999 with reference to the speed limits of road sections. Review of Speed Limits 2. In 1998 and 1999, Transport Department conducted a comprehensive review on speed limits of major road sections in Hong Kong. Over 40 major road sections were reviewed and the speed limits of 18 of them have been relaxed. The results of the review are summarised at Annex A. 3. In 1999 and 2000, the Administration received suggestions from the public, including Members of the Legislative Council and the transport trade, to review the speed limits of 18 road sections. Review on 16 of the road sections have been completed. The speed limit of one of the road sections has been relaxed while that for the remaining 15 sections remain unchanged. As regards the remaining 2 road sections, no review was conducted as there were either drainage or road works going on or planned for that particular section, such that traffic would not be moving at its normal speed. A summary of the results of the review is at Annex B.

It has been observed that existing translation studies literature appears to cater mainly for long texts. This suggests that there may be a literature gap with regard to short text translation. Investigating how short texts are translated would reveal whether mainstream translation theories and strategies are also applicable to such texts. Therefore, the objectives of the paper are two-fold. Firstly, it seeks to confirm whether there is in fact a gap in the existing literature on short texts by reviewing corpuses of leading works in translation studies. Secondly, it investigates how short texts have been translated by examining the translation theories and strategies used. This is done by way of a case study on street names in Hong Kong. The case study also seeks to remedy the possible paucity of translation literature on short texts by building an objective and representative database to function as an effective platform for examining how street names have been translated. Data, including street names in English and Chinese, are collected by way of systematic sampling from the entire data population.

ECOLOGICAL IMPACT Introduction 3.1 This section presents the results of assessment of potential ecological impacts resulting from the Project. The aim of the ecological impact assessment is to provide sufficient and accurate ecological data to allow complete and objective identification, prediction, and evaluation of the potential ecological impact. 3.2 The assessment was based on field surveys and a review of existing literature, including survey and assessment reports of the study area. Ecological sensitive receivers were identified, and the ecological importance of habitats / species potentially affected by the proposed works was evaluated. The scale of possible ecological impacts resulting from the proposed works was assessed, and necessary mitigation measures were identified. Residual ecological impacts were assessed, and ecological monitoring and audit requirements were identified. Environmental Legislation, Standards and Guidelines 3.3 Guidelines, standards, documents and ordinances / regulations listed in the following sections were referred to during the course of the ecological impact assessment. 3.4 The Country Parks Ordinance (Cap. 208) provides for the designation and management of country parks and special areas. Country parks are designated for the purpose of nature conservation, countryside recreation and outdoor education. Special Areas are created mainly for the purpose of nature conservation. 3.5 The Forests and Countryside Ordinance (Cap. 96) prohibits felling, cutting, burning or destroying of trees and growing plants in forests and plantations on government land. Related subsidiary regulations prohibit the selling or possession of listed, restricted and protected plant species.

    KCRC West Rail Contract No. CC-404 Mei Foo Station CLIENT Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation CONTRACTOR Kier – Zen Pacific Joint Venture CONTRACT VALUE HK$1,763 million CONSTRUCTION PERIOD August 1999 to October 2003 MAJOR WORKS CONSISTED OF : - Station box structure with a footprint of approx. 31,500m² which lies partially underneath the Lai Chi Kok bridge. There are 2 side platforms for passenger trains. The station concourse is immediately above the platforms and the roof is covered by landscaping. There are also plant rooms and ventilation ducts below the platform level in specific areas. - The roof of the station structure is landscaped with plants and is featured an innovative roof top parkland for use by the public. - The KCR/MTR interchange link crossing over the existing culvert LK2 connecting to an entrance Pavilion on Lai Wan Road. - The Freight tunnel spur extending from the Ching Cheung Road retaining wall towards the south and terminating where it meets the Route 3. - The Freight and Passenger Tunnels across Ching Cheung Road up to the Ha Kwai Chung bored tunnels portal. - The temporary footbridge from Ching Lai Court to Lai Chi Kok Park. - Demolition of the existing footbridge across Ching Cheung Road and the associated access ramps. - Construction of Emergency Access Point and associated facilities directly to the north of Ching Cheung Road. - Slope reinstatement between Ching Cheung Road and Lai King Hill Road. - Earth mounding and landscaping over the station box and the area between culvert LK2 and the KCV slip road. - Landscaping over an earth mound over the tunnel box between culvert LK2 and Po Lun Street.

The original name arose because the mountain roads were steep and villagers had to scramble up steep hillsides to get to the surrounding areas. The name was later changed to Kau Wah Keng or “Ninth Shining Path” (九華徑) as villagers thought the name was vulgar and also likened the villagers to dogs.
