Fact Sheet: ciNE65 Festival 2019

ABOUT ciNE65 ciNE65 is the largest national platform for film students and young film-makers to produce short films that deepen our sense of belonging to Singapore. It encourages aspiring young film-makers to share what Singapore means to them. Launched in July 2011, ciNE65 is now into its fifth season. ciNE65 2019 consists of four commissioned films, a short film competition "ciNE65 Movie Makers Awards" (ciNE65 MMA), film-making seminars and workshops, and the ciNE65 Festival. The theme for ciNE65 2019, "Singapura", calls on film- makers to reflect on the stories of our past generations that make us Singaporean and how we want these stories to live on for future generations to come. ciNE65 FESTIVAL 2019

The ciNE65 Festival starts with five days of film screenings from 5 to 9 June 2019 and culminates with the ciNE65 Awards Ceremony on 13 June 2019. The schedule of ciNE65 Film Screenings is provided in the table below. Details of each programme can be found in Annex A.

Winners of the ciNE65 Movie Makers Awards will be announced at the ciNE65 Awards Ceremony on 13 June 2019. There are a total of 3 award categories – the ciNE65 Movie Makers Awards, the ciNE65 Jury's Choice Awards and Audience Choice Awards.

The Jury's Choice Awards comprises eight technical awards for both the Student and Open Categories respectively. In addition to the eight technical awards, participants from both categories can also compete for the Movie Makers Awards. ANNEX A Programme 1 - 75 min Premiere of first film of Singapore Bicentennial's trilogy 1299 by Ervin Han

"1299" is the first of a trilogy of short animation clips. Told through snapshots of three pivotal moments in Singapore's history (1299, 1819 and 2019), the trilogy highlights the journey Singapore has taken and the unique traits of Openness, Multiculturalism and Self Determination that have shaped us as a people. Followed by a screening of Timescapes, an anthology of animated short films set against the landscapes of Singapore produced by local animation studio Robot Playground Media, and directed by Ervin Han. With a large focus on some of Singapore's heritage sites, the Timescapes anthology is a nostalgic journey and a tribute to significant places. Films screened include: Erhu by Ervin Han / 5 min / Animation / 2018 This animated short film takes viewers back to the old days of colonial Singapore, this time in the mid-1800s when emigrants arrived in droves after Singapore became a free port. The story follows the life of a Chinese coolie and erhu player The Violin by Ervin Han / 16 min / Animation / 2015 A young boy receives an old violin as a gift out of kindness from a foreign trader in the 1930s. Over the 16-minute film, the violin graces different stages of Singapore - both figuratively and literally – as we see a young country's landscape change from the bustling 1930s to the dark days of the Japanese Occupation, followed by the sweeping political changes in the 60s that led to its independence and finally, present day. Rain by Ervin Han / 10 min / Animation / 2017 A story about solitude, serendipity and kindness during a late afternoon downpour in the city as two souls try to make their way home. The Girl & the Cat by Ervin Han / 13 min / Animation / 2017 A young girl is separated from her mother at a Singaporean night market and meets a cat who brings her deep into the underbelly of the bazaar where fantasy meets reality. Playgrounds by Ervin Han / 10 min / Animation / 2017 A look at life's bittersweet simplicity as we follow a boy and a girl from childhood to old age with their years marked by Singapore playgrounds from days gone by. Little Red Bricks by Ervin Han / 14 min / Animation / 2017 A friendship that blossomed between bookshelves in a library grows into a life-long love story

Scammed and stranded abroad without shelter or resources, the woman opens up her heart and home to the helpless man. The Red Packet by Sufyan Sam'an / 3 min / Drama / 2017 2014 was the year my Maternal Grandma finally met her birth mom. We knew since young that she was Chinese but raised by a Malay family. We never expected to ever meet or be greeted with open arms by new found Chinese family members. I was sure my Grandma did not do so at her age of 70. Since celebrating Chinese New Year was something new to us, my little cousins were confused about the festivities and cultures. So when they take their hong baos, they say the usual Hari Raya greetings instead. The Flame by K.Rajagopal / 15 min / Drama / 2015 The Flame revolves around an Indian family, whose men are loyal servants of the British Royal Air Force, as they are faced with a life-changing offer of British citizenship – a reward for their years of service. The anglophone father is determined to follow his colonial masters back to England, while the newly-wed son yearns to stay in Singapore. Their conflict studies the notion of state and identity as the central theme of the short story. This short film was part of the 7 Letters anthology commissioned for SG50. The Perm by Wee Li Lin / 6 min / Comedy / 2017 Soft-spoken Carolyn, 12, is on the cusp of the awkward teenage years. About to enter secondary school, Carolyn decides to get a trendy Korean hairstyle to kickstart the fact that she is now of age to perm her hair. Carolyn's grandmother assures her that the best place to get the perm done is at Grandma's long-time hair salon down the block. But is the salon Carolyn grew up in the right place to undertake this important rite of passage? The Secret Passion of Mdm Tan Ah Lian by Sun Koh / 16 min / Drama / 2014 Mdm Tan is past her retirement age but stubbornly clings on to her job despite pleas from her husband to retire and stay home. Littles does he know, she has been leading a secret life. BLESS by Victric Thng / 2 min / Drama / 2013 A woman reminisces her wedding day from 47 years ago. A setting in an old photo studio, where the bride and groom are getting ready for their wedding photo shoot. A young soldier boy's thoughts are captured, as he is about to charge into battle, towards enemy fire. He goes through a plethora of emotions, from fear, to reminiscence, to realization, and finally, courage in the face of death. A Needle A Stitch by Lawrence Loh / 3 min / Documentary / 2015 Based on an interview with an elderly uncle who runs a clothes alteration shop with his wife. It is reflective of their lives where they live by a needle a stitch every day. It is their bread and butter and their passion. They are an inspiration to many elderly who have lost their direction and do not have something to hold on at the later stages of their lives. GPS (Grandma Positioning System) by Kelvin Tong / 16 min / Drama / 2015 A young boy and his family travel to Johor each year during Qing Ming to pay respects to his late grandfather. The boy's grandmother has the ritual of describing the changes in Singapore to her late husband at every single visit. During one visit, the family's attitude is changed by the boy's actions. This short film was part of the 7 Letters anthology commissioned for SG50. Homesick by Anthony Chen / 1 min / Drama / 2013 A simple call from a son abroad. An unspoken missing of family and home. 36 Ways to Say Good Morning by Royston Tan / 3 min / Drama / 2018 A film that showcases the sights and sounds we hear and see daily in Singapore but often take for granted. The film allows the audience to have a glimpse of the morning experience of Singaporeans from all walks of life, and it allows us to identify and relate to each scenario, and to celebrate the unspoken things that mark our Singapore identity.

However as the conversation develops, the father realises that the call is not a casual one. Blk 401 by Stanley Xu / 3 min / Documentary / 2015 A young man finds the feeling of home in the coffee shop he used to visit, as he reminisce fragments of his childhood and adolescence there.

Bunga Sayang by Royston Tan / 13 min / Drama / 2015 A boy comes home one day to take a bath, only to find out that his unit's water supply has been cut. Desperate for water, he drops by his neighbour upstairs, an elderly Malay woman with a fondness for making kueh and listening to music. Unwavering by Lawrence Loh / 3 min / Drama / 2015 Unwavering is a film based on an old cleaner, who reminisces about the times when she set out to achieve her dreams and aspirations. Pink IC by Alvin Lee / 3 min / Drama / 2018 Based on a true story, Pink IC showcases the emotional experience of a stateless Singaporean of Caucasian descent after waiting 50 years for his pink identification card. Tireless by Kenny Tan / 1 min / Drama / 2014 A heartfelt tribute to the very people who have sacrificed tirelessly for the growth and well- being of each individual as well as the society at large. Afternoon at Bukit Ho Swee by Koh Chong Wu / 3 min / Drama / 2018 A story about a samsui woman who thinks that she had time travelled to contemporary Singapore. She recollects her experience of the Bukit Ho Swee fire to a young woman she met. Bonds by Tan Jun Yuan / 2 min / Comedy / 2013 In regardless of races, language and religious, or which part of the world they are at, all Singaporean will be seated in front of the television, crossing their fingers and hope that Team Singapore will be able to win the match with the last penalty kick. No matter where we are, we will always be there for Singapore, our country. Going Away by Tariq Mansor / 3 min / Drama / 2013 A young lady struggles with her decision and talks to her family members and friends about her intention of leaving her normal life to pursue something different. The people around her reminds her of the things she will miss but it is because of these people that she considered this decision in the first place. Parting by Boo Junfeng / 13 min / Drama / 2015 An elderly man travels to Singapore via the KTM express to look for an old flame whom he has lost contact with. This short film was part of the 7 Letters anthology commissioned for SG50. The Team by Ray Pang / 3 min / Comedy / 2011 The Team is a short film about kids in Singapore who loves soccer, in regardless of race or background. Set in the 90s, when our national football team is made up of multi-racial players that bring glory to Singapore as a nation. It's not about who we are, but what are we that matter. Priceless by Kenny Tan / 3 min / Drama / 2013 A visit to the principal's office over an innocent dispute brings about an invaluable lesson on the significance of defending one's own and being there for what really matters. 冰棒 by Vigo Toh / 3 min / Drama / 2017

Due to his eye deficiency, he lost hope and sees a dull future in his 2 years of army. He is in turn inspired by a little boy who looks up to him as a soldier and a hero. Home-made by Aloysius Lee / 3 min / Drama / 2015 Home-made is a short monologue about a young Singaporean chef, Joey (Ah Boy). Hello Auntie by Calvin Soon / 3 min / Drama / 2019 Hello Auntie is a story about a Normal Technical (NT) student whom many refer to as rotten apples, just like his neighbour Auntie Jaccy. On this particular day, the student did something that somewhat changes his neighbour's perspective about NT students. Little Red Fire Engine by Muhammad Dinie Bin Jumali / 3 min / Drama / 2019 A curious boy discovers his neighbour in dire circumstances. He witnesses how his grandfather mobilizes help to save their neighbour and becomes inspired to be like his grandfather, who is a retired firefighter.
