Sevenoaks Festival 2014 WEB VERSION Welcome to our 45th Annual Festival! Sevenoaks Summer Festival 2014 Saturday 21st June - Sunday 6th July UKULELE ORCHESTRA OF GREAT BRITAIN Festival Finale willardsir white New this year Young Professionals see p18 Chairman’s Welcome Welcome!! Once again it’s my pleasure to welcome you to our Summer Festival, the 45th annual celebration and showcase of the breadth and diversity of Sevenoaks’ arts activities, continuing a tradition begun by Sevenoaks School in 1970. The detailed programme is presented on the following pages, displayed with event titles colour- coded according to genre as listed under “Festival Programme” on pages 4 & 5, an “at a glance” listing of this year’s quality offerings. Festival Fair, centred in Bligh’s, once again opens the programme, with entertainment, performances and activities throughout Saturday 21 June, including the Town Council’s Charity Fayre, our popular Youth Music Stage, Treasure Hunts for the young & not-so-young, stilt-walkers, jugglers, magicians and other ‘walkabout’ entertainers, including the welcome return of Bjorn the Polar Bear, plus our Grand Prize Draw. Elsewhere in Sevenoaks, we feature once again the amazing experience that is Colourscape in the Vine Gardens, (where we also site an Arts Tent for Kids). Wishworks’ Interactive Puppet Shows bring Red Riding Hood and Goldifox to STAG’s Plaza Suite, and, in The Shambles, we welcome once again Clare and Mark Seddon’s Nursery Rhyme Singalong and Mel’s Punch & Judy Show, singing and magic – all for our younger visitors. As ever, we thank our Principal Sponsor, Sevenoaks Town Council for its continued support in difficult times of activities organised by volunteers for the benefit of the whole community, our major sponsors, Sevenoaks Chronicle and United House, our event and flag sponsors and our patrons, members, friends and, of course, our participants. I’m especially grateful to Ignis UK Property Fund for letting us use Bligh’s for Festival Fair, to STAG Community Arts Centre for providing Box Office and publicity facilities, to the Town Council for funding the infrastructure and support services that comprise the Youth Music Stage, to Malabar Coffee Shop for its collaboration in use of The Shambles and to our other sponsors for their valued patronage: Barracudas, Berkeley Homes, Bligh’s Meadow, Hamptons, Royal Oak Hotel, Sevenoaks Music Club, Specsavers, Waitrose and Warners. My thanks also for the continuing support of Sevenoaks and Walthamstow Hall schools. Finally, special thanks to John Levett for his expert advice and booking skills, to Laura Pigott of Creative Dolly for designing this brochure and giving us a bright new-look front cover, to all our enthusiastic helpers for freely giving their time and skills, and above all, of course, my Committee pictured below – without whom I wouldn’t be writing! • Role of Chairman
Chairman’s Report 2009/2010 My year as Chairman has passed very quickly. During that time I have attended approaching 300 engagements and most of which my wife Hazel has been with me in a very supportive role as Chairman’s escort. A memorable occasion was my invitation to the annual lunch of the London Mayors’ Association. The current President of the Association is the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Duncan Sandys. As Cllr Sandys is Winston Churchill’s great grandson, this lunch was held at Chartwell in Sevenoaks District. This was followed by an even more memorable occasion, which was the Annual Civic Service of the London Mayors in Westminster Abbey. I have attended many other church services including the reopening of the Drive Methodist Church, two services at the superb late Saxon “Church in the Woods” at West Kingsdown and the farewell service to Michael Nazir Ali, the Bishop of Rochester. I was grateful for the support during the year of Canon Paul Francis, the vicar of Riverhead and Dunton Green as Chairman’s Chaplain, and was also grateful for the extent to which the local vicar of St Luke’s, Rev Mark Griffin, supports the District Council. There were a number of Christmas carol services. Of these, two of the most memorable were the singing of carols around the wards of Sevenoaks Hospital on Christmas Eve, and the Mencap carol service. That service is a joyful and very happy occasion with everyone joining in with famous carols such as Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer! On a sadder note I represented the Council at memorial services for two past Chairmen, Joyce Thompsett and John Harris OBE MC.

  • Southeastern Penalty Fare Scheme
Southeastern Penalty Fare Scheme DMC2685 Version 1 2009 Penalty Fare Scheme 2009 1 Introduction 1.1 We, Southeastern, give notice under rule 3.2 of the SRA’s Penalty Fares Rules 2002 that we want to change our penalty fares scheme with effect from 30 April 2009. This document describes our penalty fare scheme for the purposes of rule 3(2)(b). 1.2 Southeastern currently operates a penalty fares scheme because, each year, our passengers make over 130 million journeys and even if only a small percentage of these passengers travel without paying, Southeastern will lose a considerable amount of money. Reducing the number of people who travel without a ticket is not only in the interests of Southeastern, but also in the interests of most fare-paying passengers. Few of us want to subsidise people who avoid paying, and the loss of income due to people travelling without tickets reduces the money available to invest in a better rail service. 1.3 As part of our revenue protection strategy, we have invested in the installation of additional automatic ticket gates, but it is not cost effective to install ticket gates at every station. We have therefore focussed the use of gates at our stations where large numbers of customers travel, especially at the London terminals. Conductors carry out on board ticket checks on longer distance journeys but suburban services operate without a conductor. Also, where station stops are frequent or where the trains are often busy it is not always possible to check every passenger’s ticket between every station.

  • Otford Circular Via Romney Street Walk
Saturday Walkers Club www.walkingclub.org.uk Otford Circular via Romney Street walk A short walk packed with variety and fine views, bluebell woods in season, a pretty village and a short train journey Romney Street, Shoreham and the Darent Valley Length 12.0km (7.5 miles), 3 hours 30 minutes. For the whole outing, including trains, sights and meals, allow 7 hours 30 minutes. Toughness 6 out of 10. OS Maps Explorer 147 or Landranger 188. Otford, map reference TQ 532 593, is in Kent, 4km north of Sevenoaks. Features Being short in length, this walk makes a good, brisk, autumn or winter walk, with several ups and downs, although the walk is also delightful in bluebell season as the route passes through lots of bluebell woods during the morning. The route at the outset is steeply uphill, for a time following the North Downs Way, with views back over Otford and the valley, then going through Greenhill Wood, with a glimpse of Oak Hall, before heading north to Romney Street. You then have a steep descent to cross a former golf course for a short, steep ascent before dropping down to Shoreham village, for a late lunch at one of its four pubs or two tea rooms or vineyard. Shoreham village is worth exploring, with its twelfth-century church. After lunch the original TO Book route onwards is the Darent Valley Path through a golf course and over fields back to Otford, which offers two tearooms, a palace (in ruins), a church and many ancient buildings. It also contains the Otford Solar System, which claims to be the only scale model of its kind in the world - see History below.

MARKY DAWSON MARKY DAWSON VOX AND KEYS Pop, Rock’n’Roll, Blues Rox Management Ltd MARKY DAWSON Marky Dawson was born and raised in Broadstone, Dorset. Growing up surrounded by his dad’s impressive record collection it was almost inevitable that he would develop a love for music. And so he grew up with influences such as Ray Charles, Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel, Queen and Elton John, to name but a few. He started playing piano at age 14 and pretty soon started writing his own songs. He moved to London to get ‘spotted’ and he did get spotted, by his manager and publisher Adrian Rox. (Adrian also discovered Michael McIntyre during his days in the comedy business). Playing over 100 gigs in 2015 alone Marky has been serving his ‘apprenticeship’ doing solo gigs mainly in London and on the South Coast, but even as far afield as Austria (photo below at k.u.k in Bad Ischl). Rox Management Ltd A CD was released last autumn of piano/vocal songs called ‘First Takes’. The piano was recorded at Derek Nash’s studio (Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra) and vocals and production done by Mike Peters (B*witched, Liberty X). It includes a seminal unplugged version of Queen’s ‘Radio Gaga’, along with 5 of Marky’s impressive originals. Over the last year Marky has guested with Ben Waters, Daniel Smith, John O’Leary/Alan Glen and supported Never The Bride on many occasions and also Ben Montague. Nikki Lambourn (NTB’s vocalist, photo left) is now also Marky’s vocal coach (she coaches the likes of Beverley Knight, Newton Faulkner).
