Dependent Origination: Seeing the Dharma Week Six: Interconnectedness and Interpenetration Experiential Homework Possibilities The experiential homework is essentially the first exercise we practiced in class involving looking for the boundary between oneself and other than self while experiencing seeing. This is the exercise my dissertation subjects were given for my data collection portion of my dissertation research. It relates directly to the transition from the link of nama-rupa to the link of vinnana, and then sankhara, that I spoke about in my talk this week. Just so that you can begin to have some experiential relationship to my research before I present my dissertation in our last session in two weeks, I’m including the exact instructions as they were given to my participants as well as the daily journal questionnaire they were asked to fill out. Exercises like these are meant not as onetime exercises but for repeated application. Your experience of them will often change and deepen if they are applied regularly over an extended period of time. My subjects used this exercise as part of their daily meditation practice for 15 minutes a day over a period of 10 days. Each day they filled out the questionnaire, their answers to which then became a significant part of my data. See below. Introduction: From the Great Chain of Being to Postmodernism in Three Easy Steps The following is an excerpt from the first draft of volume 2 of the Kosmos trilogy, tentatively titled Kosmic Karma (volume 1 of that trilogy was Sex, Ecology, Spirituality). This excerpt suggests a coherent and comprehensive theory of the many approaches to subtle energies, their origin, nature, and development. This particular excerpt comes toward the end of the volume, which means that somebody reading this excerpt will not have the benefit (or the torture) of having read the first part of the book. I will therefore present a brief introduction, followed by an integral approach to subtle energies. The first two excerpts from Kosmic Karma ("An Integral Age at the Leading Edge" and "The Many Ways We Touch") can be found on this site; they explain the general approach itself. "AQAL" (pronounced ah-quil) is short for "all quadrants, all levels, all lines, all states, all types," which is the metatheory of the integral approach, and which will be explained as we go along. Following the background Introduction (Part I), I will outline an "Integral Theory of Subtle Energies" (Part II), and end with a comparison with other theorists (Part IV). The subtle system of the chakras by Jacques Vigne, M.D psychiatrist The subtle body is a notion that can be associated concretely with the bodily experience, different from the anatomy strictly speaking. It is important to understand from the start that the physical anatomy and the subtle one are not in opposition but are complementary. Let us begin by examining the meaning of the term chakra (pronounced tchakra in Sanskrit and Hindi). It comes from the same root as the English word circle. The chakra is a typically solar symbol which was developed by both Vaishnavism and Buddhism. Before statues came into use, in ancient times before our era, both Vishnu and Buddha were represented by footprints (often merely small natural depressions in a rock, interpreted as footprints) and by the chakra. Padam, the foot in Sanskrit, also means the path taken by a spiritual master leading us to the level of inner experience we seek. The chakras are levels of rising energy inside us that can be harnessed if we work on opening them up. They are like the footholds used by climbers, and their round shape also evokes the shape of the head, which can explain the very ancient association between the two notions, indicating the upward rush of energy from feet to head. In Buddhism, the dharma, that body of right understanding and ethical teachings that sustains the world − both the inner and outer one − is represented by the dharmachakra, and the teaching which corresponds to it sets the wheel of the dharma in motion, dharmachakra- parivartana symbolized by the gesture of the Buddha of Sarnath, whose name means” Lord of the deer”. -
