Antisemitism in the United States Report of an Expert Consultation Organized by AJC’s Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights in Cooperation with UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed 10-11 April 2019, New York City Introduction On March 5, 2019, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, announced that he was preparing a thematic report on global antisemitism to be presented to the UN General Assembly in New York in the fall of 2019. The Special Rapporteur requested that the Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights (JBI) organize a consultation that would provide him with information about antisemitism in the United States as he carried out his broader research. In response, JBI organized a two-day expert consultation on Wednesday, April 10 and Thursday, April 11, 2019 at AJC’s Headquarters in New York. Participants discussed how antisemitism is manifested in the U.S., statistics and trends concerning antisemitic hate crimes, and government and civil society responses to the problem. This event followed an earlier consultation in Geneva, Switzerland convened by JBI for Dr. Shaheed in June 2018 on global efforts to monitor and combat antisemitism and engaging the United Nations human rights system to address this problem.1 I. W drugiej połowie kwietnia1 odnotowaliśmy znaczne pogorszenie ocen polityków z czołówki rankingu zaufania, czyli prezydenta i premiera. Utrzymali oni jednak swoje pozycje, a prezydent Bronisław Komorowski nadal jest zdecydowanym liderem tego rankingu. Ufa mu dwie trzecie Polaków (67%, o 8 punktów procentowych mniej niż w marcu), podczas gdy jedna piąta (20%, wzrost o 8 punktów) deklaruje nieufność. Drugie miejsce zajmuje premier Ewa Kopacz ex aequo z kandydatem PiS na prezydenta Andrzejem Dudą. Ufa im po 44% badanych. W ciągu miesiąca odsetek osób ufających obecnej premier zmniejszył się o 7 punktów, a nieufnych wzrósł o 8 punktów. Trzeba zaznaczyć, że w marcu odnotowaliśmy znaczną poprawę notowań Ewy Kopacz, więc w sytuacji jej niewielkiej aktywności medialnej można potraktować obecne pogorszenie jako korektę ocen. Tym bardziej że opinie o działalności rządu i samej premier zmieniły się tylko nieznacznie2. W przypadku Andrzeja Dudy należy zwrócić uwagę na ciągły wzrost jego rozpoznawalności (w stosunku do marca o 4 punkty, a w stosunku do lutego, kiedy oficjalnie rozpoczął kampanię wyborczą, o 15 punktów)3. Zmiany opinii o nim nie są jednak jednoznaczne, wzrósł bowiem zarówno odsetek badanych, wśród których budzi zaufanie, jak i tych, którzy deklarują nieufność (po 4 punkty). -

Kerstin Mayerhofer and Armin Lange Comprehending Antisemitism through the Ages: Introduction Robert Wistrich’sdefinition of antisemitism as the “longest hatred”¹ carries as much weight now as it did thirty years ago, when Wistrich published his land- mark study. Today, in our contemporary societies and culture, antisemitism is on the rise, and its manifestations are manifold. Antisemitic hate crimes have spiked in recent decades, and antisemitic stereotypes, sentiments, and hate speech have permeated all parts of the political spectrum. In order to effectively counteract the ever-growingJew-hatred of our times, it is important to recognise the traditions thathavefed antisemitism throughout history.Antisemitism is an age-old hatreddeeplyembeddedinsocieties around the globe. While the inter- net and modern media have contributed beyond measure to the increase of Jew- hatred in all parts of the world, the transformation processes thatantisemitism has been undergoing through the ages remain the same. Acorecondition of an- tisemitism is its versatile nature and adaptability,both of which can be traced through all periods of time. Current-day antisemitism is shaped and sustained not onlybypowerful precedents but also reflects common fears and anxieties that our societies are faced with in aworld that is ever changingand where the changes run even faster todaythaneverbefore. Historical awareness of the nature of antisemitism, therefore, is more important than ever.The present volume, thus, wantstohelp raise this awareness.Its articles tracethe history of antisemitismand the tradition of antisemitic stereotypes through the ages. It documents various manifestations of antisemitism over time and reflects on the varyingmotivations for antisemitism.Assuch, these contributions shed light on socio-culturaland socio-psychological processes that have led to the spike of antisemitism in various periods of time and in varyingintensity.In this way, they can help to establish methods and policies to not onlytocounter current antisemitic manifestations but also to combat them. -

It updates a similar survey covering 2015 and earlier [See Note 1] It concentrates on social, cultural, religious and political topics and mostly ignores terrorism and armed conflict in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. The Islamic State is sometimes covered because it has such a strong Islamic dimension. 1.1 The Main Findings Across the political spectrum, from the Guardian to the Daily Mail , an overwhelmingly large number of readers are critical of Islam, severely so in many cases. The criticism covers a wide range of subjects including freedom of speech, sharia, family law, how to handle extremism, extremist beliefs, treatment of women, integration, multiculturalism, and segregated communities. At least 90 percent of the comments and the votes on the comments are negative about Islam. The only difference between the Guardian on the left and the Daily Mail on the right is Guardian readers write far longer comments!!
