J/Orient/03 03.10.10 10:55 AM ページ 94 A History of Women in Japanese Buddhism: Nichiren’s Perspectives on the Enlightenment of Women Toshie Kurihara OVERVIEW HE Buddhist thinker and reformer Nichiren (1222–1282) is consid- Tered among the most progressive of the founders of Kamakura Bud- dhism, in that he consistently championed the capacity of women to achieve salvation throughout his ecclesiastic writings.1 This paper will examine Nichiren’s perspectives on women, shaped through his inter- pretation of the 28-chapter Lotus Sutra of Gautama Shakyamuni in India, a version of the scripture translated by Buddhist scholar Kumara- jiva from Sanskrit to Chinese in 406. The paper’s focus is twofold: First, to review doctrinal issues concerning the spiritual potential of women to attain enlightenment and Nichiren’s treatises on these issues, which he posited contrary to the prevailing social and religious norms of medieval Japan. And second, to survey the practical solutions that Nichiren, given the social context of his time, offered to the personal challenges that his women followers confronted in everyday life. THE ATTAINMENT OF BUDDHAHOOD BY WOMEN Historical Relationship of Women and Japanese Buddhism During the Middle Ages, Buddhism in Japan underwent a significant transformation. The new Buddhism movement, predicated on simpler, less esoteric religious practices (igyo-do), gained widespread acceptance among the general populace. It also redefined the roles that women occupied in Buddhism. The relationship between established Buddhist schools and women was among the first to change. It is generally acknowledged that the first three individuals in Japan to renounce the world and devote their lives to Buddhist practice were women. -

Shikai Zuiko o-sensei and Nathan Fushin Comeau Article 1: Guan Yin Rupa As you enter the front door of the Monastery you may have noticed a white porcelain figure nearly two feet tall standing on the shelf to the left. Who is she? Guan Yin, Gwaneum, Kanzeon, are some of the names she holds from Chinese, Korean, and Japanese roots. The object is called a "rupa" in Sanskrit, which means "form" and in this case a statue that has the form of a representation of a quality which humans hold dear: compassion. I bought this 20th century rupa shortly after we established a small temple, Zazen-ji, on Somerset West. This particular representation bears a definite resemblance to Ming dynasty presentations of "One Who Hears the Cries of the World". Guan Yin, Gwaneum, Kanzeon seems to have sprung from the Indian representation of the qualities of compassion and warmth portrayed under another name; Avalokitesvara. The name means "looking down on and hearing the sounds of lamentation". Some say that Guan Yin is the female version of Avalokitesvara. Some say that Guan Yin or, in Japan, Kannon or Kanzeon, and Avalokitesvara are the same and the differences in appearance are the visibles expression of different influences from different cultures and different Buddhist schools, and perhaps even the influence of Christianity's madonna. The joyful presence of so many of our Marpa family, which included a real international presence. The ling glorious weather smiled upon us all weekend, making mealtime BUDDHIST picnicking around the beautiful MEDITATION AND garden delightful. Incredible teachings from Kyabje Chime RETREAT CENTRE Rinpoche, Pasang Rinpoche and Lama Sean made it feel like Summer School was squeezed into a weekend! On top of this was an offering of robes to the White Sangha, several Body, Speech and Mind offerings and a Guru Rinpoche Tsok puja to finish. It was remarkable to have so much happen in one weekend, and I’m sure that it will remain in our hearts forever. What a perfect blessing for us all. Earlier in the year, saw the Shrine room refurbished and the new Shrine fitted. We were delighted that Rinpoche came out of his writing retreat to bless the Shrine at Losar, and I know that many of you were moved by the beauty of this new Shrine. -

Third Edition, 1998 The Venerable Traleg Kyabgon, Rinpoche was born in 1955 in Eastern Tibet. At the age of two, he was recognised by His Holiness the sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa, head of the Kagyu lineage, as the ninth incarnation of the Traleg tulkus, which can be traced back to the time of Saltong Shogam, a contemporary of the first Karmapa. Traleg Rinpoche was enthroned as the Abbot of Tra'gu Monastery in Tibet and following the Chinese invasion of his country was taken to safety in India. There he continued the rigorous training prescribed for tulkus born with responsibilities as major lineage holders in the Tibetan tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism. This training included five years at Sanskrit University in Varanasi and several years at Rumtek Monastery, the main seat of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. Not only has Traleg Rinpoche received the complete teachings of the Karma Kagyu tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism, but he is also well acquainted with the practices and philosophy of the Drugpa Kagyu strand of the Kagyu lineage, having spent nine years studying with the Regent of the Drugpa Kagyu, the late Dungse Rinpoche, at his monastery in Darjeeling. -

Mind is the ultimate cause of our suffering. Mind is the true source of our happiness. This is Buddhism’s central insight and the key to Buddhist meditation. It’s what makes Buddhism unique among the world’s religious and secular philosophies. Among all the different causes of happiness and unhappiness people talk about, only Buddhism says unequivocally, “Mind!” Specifically, the Buddha said in “The Mind” chapter of the Dhammapada, “A tamed mind brings happiness.” Conversely, a wild and untamed mind brings suffering. Sometimes it feels like our mind is the enemy, full of painful fears, deep traumas, and repetitive thoughts we can’t seem to control. But it can also be our greatest friend, the source of love, wisdom, beauty, and all good qualities. According to Buddhism, transforming the mind of suffering into the mind of joy is the secret of life.
