Our work presents, for the first time, growth curves and measurements of mean longevity, growth rates and age at maturity for the Vulnerable midwife toad Alytes muletensis. Von Bertalanffy growth models were used to estimate longevity and growth rate parameters. Females had a mean (±SD) longevity of 4.70 ± 0.19 yr, significantly higher than that of males (3.24 ± 0.10 yr). The maximum estimated longevity was 18 yr for both males and females. The age distribution indicated that males reached sexual maturity at the age of 1 yr, and most females at 2 yr. There were significant differences in growth rate between sexes, with higher values in females during the first 4 yr of life, and similar values in both sexes thereafter. These life-history traits were compared with equivalent measures in the closely related amphibian genera Bombina and Discoglossus. Alytes muletensis is a frog endemic to the Balearic island of Majorca (or Mallorca). Its tadpole lives in semi-per- manent plunge pools which remain after mountain streams have dried up. Little is known about the morphology of the different members of the Alytidae and the relationships of its members are still unclear. Alytidae are among the most basal anurans, and improved knowledge of their larval morphology can contribute to our understanding of the morphological evolution of anurans. Herein, I describe the external morphology as well as skeletal and muscular features of a tadpole of A. muletensis at Gosner stage 25 by using standard histology, clearing and staining and 3D-reconstruction based on serial sections. The tadpole displays different discoglossoid traits such as the presence of two portions of the M. levator mandibu- lae externus, the separation of hypobranchial elements by the basibranchial, and the absence of the M. constrictor branchia- lis IV, among others. Unusual is the absence of the M. constrictor branchialis I as well as the absence of the M. intermand- ibularis. Remarkable is the presence of the admandibular cartilage as an additional skeletal element of the lower jaw. -

Characterisation Scientific name: Alytes muletensis (SANCHIZ & ADROVER, 1979) Vernacular name: Mallorcan Midwife Toad, Balearic toad Length: 3.5-4 cm CC#Amphibians category: IUCN Red List: Endangered (EN) Protection status CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species): no Protection status on European level: Annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive Housing: Preferably in groups of six animals or more in terrariums of approx. 80 x 30 x 40 cm (length x width x height) with mineral substrate (gravel etc.), many hiding places (layered cork bark, stone slabs etc.) and a removable water bowl with low water level. Moist and dry hiding places. Temperature range 15-25 °C. Year-round indoor keeping without real hibernation (wintertemperatures in the lower range of the temperature range). Diet: All common food animals up to the size „cricket medium“ are eaten (crickets, fruit flies, waxworms, isopods etc.). Even small toadlets can eat small crickets etc. Breeding: Reproduction possible all year round, peak in the summer half-year. -

Au ditory tu ning is known for a relatively large nu mber of anu ran species bu t most of those studied are recently-derived species, rather than ancient. For one of the ancient species analysed, the common midwife toad (Alytes obstetricans), an unusual mismatch was found between the dominant frequencyin the advertisement call and the tuning of the inner-ear organ that responds to the high frequencies characterizing the call (the basilar papilla). In this paper, the au ditory tu ning of a closely related species, the Iberian midwife toad (Alytes cisternasii), is analysed and the resu lts are discussed in relation to behavioural experiments perform ed on this species. The results indicate that in Alytes cisternasii basilar papilla tu ning closely matches the peak frequencyin the call, as is common forrecently-derived anu rans. Furthermore, the tu ning is consistent with behavioural measures of call preferences in this species.
