2014 IfW Bernhard Harms Prize goes to

This year the Bernhard Harms Prize, awarded by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) and worth EUR 25,000, goes to Professor Abhijit Banerjee from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Professor Banerjee is one of the world’s best known economists on the subject of combating poverty. His evidence-based methods of evaluating development policy have had a revolutionary impact on this field. With his book “Poor Economics", written jointly with Esther Duflo, Banerjee has created an economic best-seller on the subject of the fight against poverty. In this work the Indian-born scientist combines scientific work at the highest level with questions of practical political implementation. This was one reason why in 2012 UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed him a member of the High Level Panel to prepare new development targets for the UN.

Banerjee studied at the University of Calcutta and Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi before gaining his doctorate at Harvard. Since 2003 he has been Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics and Director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab at MIT.
