1st Class Service also Dinners Teas Snacks Phone: BAUINGARRY 45 ...... REAMHRA I AM PRIVILIGED to welcome you to Cion mel Sports field on the occasion of our Senior Hurling Final. We look forward to Swan and to pro vide a thrilling hour's hurling, well in keeping with the standard set In previous years We wish each and every player well in giving of his best for his club, and helping also to maintain a high standard of sportsmanship in this final, thus making it a game to be remembered amongst the finals of our divisiion. Irrespective of the outcome of to-day's final, both teams go forward to meet the Mid representatives on 27th August at a venue to be arranged. We wish them both the beSt of luck in those Quarter finals; they deserve our full support in their efforts to bring a county title to the division once again. In the general hurling pattern of our county, we cannot claim to be strong. due mainly to the lack of senior teams. We look forward to the return to senior ranks of Kilienaule and Ballybacon/Grange, who play in the curtain-raiser 10 the big game, also Marlhe.ld, Fethardl Coolmoyne, Ballingarry, , Newcastle. A sound juvenile and minor policy in each club, with a special emphasis on ground hurling, will hoelp to produce players to put hurling generally in a much strong er position. I compliment to-day's finalists for their work in this regard. As my term as Chairman comes to an end this year, I take this opportunity 0 thank very sincerely the club officials and players, referees, gate checkers, groundsmen, stewards and our patrons for thoeir wonderful support and co-operation during the past three years. I thank especially our Secretary, Miceal 0 Meara, and compliment him on the production of this souvenir programme. Miceal Mac Carthaigh, Cathaoirteach C.L.C. Coisde Co. Thiobrad Arann Theas a , ,. /"'\ARRICK Swan 'have a proud record in hurling. They '-..I first came, to prominence in Senior ranks in 1929, when their team -regarded by the experts as "novices"-were beaten in the Cham pionship semi-final by the, 1927 Junior Co. Champions, ., by 6-3 to 5-3. The fifteen that did duty for "the 'birds" on that occasion was: Ned 'Reilly, Dan Roche, Pat O'Toole, Wm. OIBrien, Frank Power, Joe and PIe,ter , Sob McGann, Matty McGrath, Tony Neylon, Wm . Finlay, Mick , Tom 'Maher, Mick and John 'Phelan. Swan took their first South title in 1932 at Junior level and had not long to wait for Senior success. This came in '33, when they scol"€d a decisive 4-8 to 1"() win over Boherlahan, who had been unbeatEfi in the Division from 1924-'30. Swan went on to lose to eVEntual Co. Champions, Moycarkey, before a huge crowd (gate receipts '£101) at Gail:e. Swan's history-making line-out was: 'Pat Mahony, Joe & John Dunne, , Pat O'Toole. Ned Eade, Denis lAyan, John Maher, John Sullivan, PatMillea, Tom Gough, Jim Costigan, Nicholas Connors, Tony Neylon, Wm. O'Brien. Th€ 'Club went on to win further South titles in 1-935 and 1936, and reached the Co. Final in '35 only 10 be beaten by Sarsfields. One of the Club's greatest moments came in '37, when Willie Wall played a leading role in Tipperary's 'A'll-lreland success over al Killarne.y and brought home a lirst All-Ireland medal. The 'South Championship again came Swan's way in '39 before the Club's greatest era in the forties. They monopolised th'e, Championship Irom 1944 to 1-948 inc lusive, and Tom Wall added his own piece of history by emulating his brolhe,r, Willie, and bringing home an All-Ireland medal in 1945. 1947 was to prove a never·lo-be-forgotten year when the elusive Co. Hire. came to the Club for the one and only time. Paddy Fleming brought a third All-Ireland medal to Swan in 1951, and further South Championship successes came in 1950, 1952, 1958, and 1959. The sixties sadly proved unsuccessful but the ss,venties brought a new era and a rise in the !Club's fortunes. A County Championship success in the undH-21 grade in 1.97"2 paved the way tor a golden year in '74, when arch rivals Davins were defeated in a memorable South final. Further tAli-Ireland msdals were won by Tony F.ilzpatrlck in Inter mediate and Gerry Whelan in Minor, and whilst Swan have suffered defeat in the last thr€€ South deciders they are confident that they are onCe again on the victory trail and that captain Sean Fitzpatrick will to-day bring home the "Championship trophy to the Swan club for the 15th time. ------N unusual emmissary left Clonmel Sportsfield for SWANS' ACarrick-on-Suir on the afternoon of Sunday' 26th October, 1947 It was a carrier pigeon bringing the FINEST good news that Swan had defeated 5-4 to 2-2 in the County Senior Hurling Final, thus bring HOUR ing the Dan Breen Cup to the Suirside town for the first time in its history. lEarlier in the year, Swan had to battle all the way to turn back the challenge of their fierce rivals KiU€.naule by a single point, 4-7 to 4-6, in a thrilling South Final, but from then on they went from strength to strength, def€ating in the semi-final and then rather easily accounting for a Sorrisoleigh team, powered by minor star Paddy Kenny and his brother, Sean. The big men in the Swan sidoe. that day were midfielder Tom Wall, his brother Willie, who captained the side from the full·back position, goalie .paddy Fleming; Jack Walsh, a very ab~ midfield assistanf to Tom Wall; Paddy Kelly, who never allowed Paddy Kenny to get into the game; and forwards "Hawk" Nugent and "Three Goal" Paddy Madden. ,Every man on the team, however, was a hero that day, and they werel given a royar reception when they returned to Carrick with the Cup fhat evening. The attendance at Clonmel Sportsfield was in excess of 8,000 and over 800 travelkd by train and nearly 1,000 by car and bicycle from Carrick.

WE GIVE G A A TRADING STAMPS A FIRST FOR FIONN MAC CUMHAILL?

ICTORY for Fionn Mac Curnhaill in t

Formed last January, the team is a combination 01 the Balllngarry and St. Patrick's Orangan & Cloneen Clubs, and they affiliated in Se- nior football and hurling. St. 'Patrick's formzd the backbone 01 the football side beaten in the first round of South and County Champion ship, but BafJingarry provide the majority 01 the players on to-day's side. The combination has been a happy om, from the start. 5t. Mary's were defeated in the first outing and then followed Suco€sses over Liam Lynch's and to-day's rivals, Swan. Although defeated by holders, Davin's, Fionn Mac 'Cumhaill had alr€ady qualiHed for the decider and they now have high hopes of confirming the form of the last en counter with Swans,

Both Ballingarry and S1. Patrick's are clubs with strong footbaU tra ditions. St. 'Patrick's have fielded a junior hurling side for many YI€ars with little success. In the past they were a powerful force in football, taking County SE.nior Championships in 1947 and 1953. 1 Whilst '8allingarry are now better known for their hurling prowess, their main achievements have also come with the big ball. The.y were Co. Senior Football Champions in 1951 and won a County Junior crown in 1939. In hurling, their greatest moment in Senior ranks came in 1949 when the Club took the Senior Hurling title for the one and only time, be.ating Killenaule in a tempestuous final.

'Probably the sweetest success of all, however, was the winning of the Coun1y Junior crown in 1-973. The South Intermediate. title was won in '77, whilst an amount of success has been enjoyed by the Club's juvenile, minor and unde,r-21 sides.

Tommy Brennan brought an All-Ireland under-21 medal to aallingarry in 1962 and in more recent times -Martin Brennan and Eugene Hanra , han have been honoured by the County selre.ctors.

With the majority of the present Fionn Mac Cumhaill Side emanating from succ'€ssful Bard na nOg teams, the future of hurling in the area is assured.

Victory in to-day's ~inal would bring great rejoicing over a wide area of the South D ivision, but, win or lose, Fionn 'ry1 ac Cumhaill have brought a vibrant new force to the Championship and look lik-e being strong contenders for many years to come. SWAN
