1 The Nickel Directive ‘The Nickel Directive’ (European Directive 94/27/EC)

Background

It has been determined that some people are sensitised to nickel or have allergic reactions to nickel. This directive covers metals that are likely to come into prolonged contact with the body and aims to reduce the incidence of sensitisation or allergic reactions.

Information

Initial Piercings (unhealed): Directive Summary: Jewellery inserted into the body during the healing period of a piercing must be homogenous (elements evenly spread throughout the metal), with nickel content less than 0.05% by mass.

Healed Piercings: Directive Summary: Replacement jewellery inserted into the body after the piercing wound has healed must have a nickel release rate lower than 0.5µg/cm 2/week.

Named after mythological Greek giants – the titans – this is truly a space-age material that is increasingly in demand for medical and aerospace applications. Titanium makes up 60% of the structural components of the space shuttle. While titanium is the 4 th most abundant structural metal on earth, it can only be found as a variety of ores. These ores must undergo a multi-step process in order to extract the titanium. With a negligible trace of nickel it is ideal for those sensitive to nickel. Titanium is also ‘bio-compatible’ and is used extensively by the British and American medical associations for implants due to its total resistance to attack by body fluids.

Titanium can also be anodised to give a thin oxide layer. While this layer is just as biocompatible, it gives an incredible PVD range of colours due to the light refracting off the oxidised surface.
