Country Report on Human Rights Practices in Croatia Page 1 of 20 Croatia Country Reports on Human Rights Practices - 2007 Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor March 11, 2008 The Republic of Croatia is a constitutional parliamentary democracy with a population of 4.4 million. Legislative authority is vested in the unicameral Sabor (parliament). The president serves as head of state and commander of the armed forces, cooperating in formulation and execution of foreign policy and directing operations of the intelligence service; he also nominates the prime minister, who leads the government. Parliamentary elections on November 25 were conducted in accordance with electoral legislation, although out-of-date registers of voters living abroad created a problem. Civilian authorities generally maintained effective control of the security forces. The government generally respected the human rights of its citizens; however, there were problems in some areas. The judicial system suffered from a case backlog, although the number of unsolved cases awaiting trial was somewhat reduced. Intimidation of some witnesses in domestic war crimes trials remained a problem. Courts continued to hold in absentia group trials for war crimes in both Vukovar and Rijeka. The government made little progress in restituting property nationalized by the Yugoslav communist regime to non-Roman Catholic religious groups. Societal violence and discrimination against ethnic minorities, particularly Serbs and Roma, remained a problem. Violence and discrimination against women continued. School officials continued to segregate Romani students into substandard schools. Trafficking in persons, violence and discrimination against homosexuals, and discrimination against persons with HIV/AIDS were also reported. -

Tourism Introduction Zadar County encompasses marine area from Island Pag to National Park Kornati and land area of Velebit, i.e. the central part of the Croatian coastline. This is the area of true natural beauty, inhabited from the Antique period, rich with cultural heritage, maritime tradition and hospitality. Zadar County is the heart of the Adriatic and the fulfilment of many sailors' dreams with its numerous islands as well as interesting and clean underwater. It can easily be accessed from the sea, by inland transport and airways. Inseparable unity of the past and the present can be seen everywhere. Natural beauties, cultural and historical monuments have been in harmony for centuries, because men lived in harmony with nature. As a World rarity, here, in a relatively small area, within a hundred or so kilometres, one can find beautiful turquoise sea, mountains covered with snow, fertile land, rough karst, ancient cities and secluded Island bays. This is the land of the sun, warm sea, olives, wine, fish, song, picturesque villages with stone- made houses, to summarise - the true Mediterranean. History of Tourism in Zadar Tourism in Zadar has a long tradition. The historical yearbooks record that in June 1879 a group of excursionists from Vienna visited Zadar, in 1892 the City Beautification Society was founded (active until 1918), and in 1899 the Mountaineering and Tourism Society "Liburnia" was founded. At the beginning of the XX century, in March 1902 hotel Bristol was opened to the public (today's hotel Zagreb). Most important period for the development of tourism in Zadar County lasted from the 60's - 80's of the 20th century, when the majority of the hotel complexes were erected. -

An island of farmhands who later turned to the sea and fishing preserving its tu- multuous history in the Benedictine monastery on the hill of Čokovac near Tkon and the Franciscan monastery near Kraj. These will fascinate nature and culture lovers. The trails are a unique experience for walking and cycling in mountain bike and leading to the highest peak of the island on Bokolj where the view extends from the peaks of Mount Vel- ebit to the hundreds of islands and islets and the Channel from Zadar to the Kornati islands. The southern part of the island, accessible by narrow roads and rustic houses, today partly intended for tourism, will bring you closer to Robinson tourism and the entire island will give you pleasure with its beaches. Spatial and Environmental Features of the Croatian Adriatic Archipelago As a Significant Nautical Destination
SPATIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FEATURES OF THE CROATIAN ADRIATIC ARCHIPELAGO AS A SIGNIFICANT NAUTICAL DESTINATION Srećko Favro1, Iva Saganić2, Zvonko Gržetić1 1 Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia, Split, Croatia 2 Zadar Private High School, Zadar, Croatia Abstract This paper analyzes spatial and environmental characteristics of Croatian Adriatic from the aspect of nautical tourism development. Sea and coastal area are the most important natural and geographical elements for nautical tourism development, together with historical, cultural, social, and economic characteristics. Analysis of the characteristics important for nautical tourism development will deal with the most attractive locations on the Croatian Adriatic, and it will recommend and suggest further development of all the elements of nautical tourism together with its complementary activities – nautical economy. Keywords: Croatian Adriatic, nautical tourism, nautical economy, yachting, marina 1. Introduction The sea and coastal area are most important natural and geographic elements for the development of nautical tourism. The natural resource bases of the nautical tourism development are (Dulčić, 2002) natural geomorphologic forms: relief of the coastal area, hydrographic elements, i.e. physical, thermal and chemical properties of water and climatic features of the area (air temperature, precipitation, winds, sunshine/cloudiness and humidity). The physical appearance of the coast and of the islands in particular is the result of interactions of man and nature. From the very beginning people built their settlements in the most suitable locations which allowed for the development of the basic survival activities – agriculture, fishing, farming, and later, seafaring. It is the reason why the majority of the settlements built on the coast or islands were in well- sheltered bays where it was convenient to organise a berth for ships, or near fertile fields with promising agriculture potential. -

PRILOG POZNAVANJU REGIONALNE STRUKTURE PRIMORSKE HRVATSKE – REGIONALIZACIJA RAVNOKOTARSKOG PROSTORA CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF REGIONAL STRUCTURE OF LITTORAL CROATIA – REGIONALIZATION OF RAVNI KOTARI AREA ANTE BLAĆE1 1Sveučilište u Zadru, Odjel za geografiju /University of Zadar, Department of Geography UDK: 911.6(497.5-3 Ravni kotari)=111=163.42 Primljeno / Received: 2014-15-5 Prethodno priopćenje Preliminary communication U radu se razmatra prostor Ravnih kotara (Primorska Hrvatska) s regionalnogeografskog stajališta. Uvodni dio sadrži teoretsku raspravu o regiji i regionalizaciji, njihovim obilježjima i značenju u suvremenim geografskim istraživanjima. Ključne riječi: granica, prostor, Ravni kotari, regija, regionalizacija The article examines the Ravni Kotari area (Littoral Croatia) from the viewpoint of regional geography. Introductory part consist of a theoretical debate on region and regionalization, their characteristics and meaning in contemporary geographic research. Using the results of existing regionalization and applying adittional criteria, a physiognomic regionalization of Ravni Kotari has been performed and presented in the central part of the article. Four smaller regional units comprising Ravni Kotari were detected: Ravni Kotari Littoral, Middle Ravni Kotari, (Ražanac-Karin) North Kotari Littoral and Southeast Kotari Littoral. All mentined units were identified with the parts of theoretical region – core, pheripery and transitional zone.
