  • Ties to Technoparks and University Characteristics in Turkey
Volume 8, Number 1, 2021, 97{117 journal homepage: region.ersa.org DOI: 10.18335/region.v8i1.300 ISSN: 2409-5370 Linking the Performance of Entrepreneurial Universities to Technoparks and University Characteristics in Turkey Tuzin Baycan1, Gokcen Arkali Olcay2 1 Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey 2 Gebze Technical University, Gebze, Turkey Received: 10 January 2020/Accepted: 2 December 2020 Abstract. Universities' third mission of knowledge commercialization imposes them a core role towards becoming entrepreneurial universities in the triple helix interacting with the government and industry. Entrepreneurial universities have crucial functions of providing entrepreneurial support infrastructure for innovation and engaging in the regional economy. Technoparks, in that sense, form an essential channel for universities to disseminate and commercialize the knowledge considering their geographical proximity and facilitating mechanisms. Measuring the performances of entrepreneurial universities and technoparks in quantitative metrics have been initiated by different government agencies in Turkey, which resulted in two different indices. The Most Entrepreneurial and Innovative University Index and the Performance Index for Technoparks track performances annually. Using the data provided by the two indices, this study explores how the technoparks' performance can be linked to the universities' scores in entrepreneurship and innovation, along with some university-specific characteristics and their interactions. The geographical proximity provided by the technoparks contributes to the performance of entrepreneurial universities. While the increasing university size has a negative effect on university entrepreneurial scores, the socio-economic development factor of the region positively contributes to the scores. Young universities are also found to benefit more from the large share of the graduate students of their student composition on university entrepreneurship and innovation scores.

  • Chapter 3 Road Network and Traffic Volume
The Study on Integrated Urban Transportation Master Plan for Istanbul Metropolitan Area in the Republic of Turkey Final Report Chapter 3 Chapter 3 Road Network and Traffic Volume 3.1 Road Network 3.1.1 Inter-regional Road Network 1) Existing Road Turkey is situated at the transit corridor between South-east Europe and the Middle East. Since “The Declaration for The Construction of International Arteries” (AGR) prepared by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) in 1950 in Geneva, Turkey has developed international corridors connecting it to Southern Europe, because the international road network of AGR included an extension to Turkey. According to the provisions of AGR, two arteries should reach Turkey as E-Road. These are E-80 entering from the Bulgarian border (Kapikule) and E-90 entering from the Greek border (Ipsala). These two main routes link the International Road Network of Europe with the Middle East and Asia at southern and eastern borders of Turkey via Anatolia. Source: KGM, Ministry of Transportation Figure 3.1.1 International Road Network through Turkey, 2007 In addition to the E-Roads, the Trans-European Motorway (TEM) project is ongoing and it covers the whole country as an expressway network. The TEM highway network in Turkey starts from Edirne at the Bulgarian border and passes through Istanbul via the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and parts into two branches in Ankara going eastward and southward. Its eastern branch again parts into two branches in Askale. One of them reaches Trabzon in the Black Sea Region, and the other ends in Gurbulak at the Iranian border.

  • The Urban Rail Development Handbook
DEVELOPMENT THE “ The Urban Rail Development Handbook offers both planners and political decision makers a comprehensive view of one of the largest, if not the largest, investment a city can undertake: an urban rail system. The handbook properly recognizes that urban rail is only one part of a hierarchically integrated transport system, and it provides practical guidance on how urban rail projects can be implemented and operated RAIL URBAN THE URBAN RAIL in a multimodal way that maximizes benefits far beyond mobility. The handbook is a must-read for any person involved in the planning and decision making for an urban rail line.” —Arturo Ardila-Gómez, Global Lead, Urban Mobility and Lead Transport Economist, World Bank DEVELOPMENT “ The Urban Rail Development Handbook tackles the social and technical challenges of planning, designing, financing, procuring, constructing, and operating rail projects in urban areas. It is a great complement HANDBOOK to more technical publications on rail technology, infrastructure, and project delivery. This handbook provides practical advice for delivering urban megaprojects, taking account of their social, institutional, and economic context.” —Martha Lawrence, Lead, Railway Community of Practice and Senior Railway Specialist, World Bank HANDBOOK “ Among the many options a city can consider to improve access to opportunities and mobility, urban rail stands out by its potential impact, as well as its high cost. Getting it right is a complex and multifaceted challenge that this handbook addresses beautifully through an in-depth and practical sharing of hard lessons learned in planning, implementing, and operating such urban rail lines, while ensuring their transformational role for urban development.” —Gerald Ollivier, Lead, Transit-Oriented Development Community of Practice, World Bank “ Public transport, as the backbone of mobility in cities, supports more inclusive communities, economic development, higher standards of living and health, and active lifestyles of inhabitants, while improving air quality and liveability.

  • Turkish Academics' Self-Efficacy Beliefs in Their Spoken English
International Journal of Progressive Education, Volume 16 Number 6, 2020 © 2020 INASED Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace: Turkish Academics’ Self-efficacy Beliefs in their Spoken English Adem Yılmaz i Kastamonu University Pınar Ayyıldız ii Ankara Science University Hasan Şerif Baltacı iii Başkent University Abstract Academics are known as individuals designing and conducting scientific research and they are to hold problem-solving skills, use scientific methods, carry out research, and publish at a global level. That said, they may encounter problems while performing the actions mentioned above due to a lack of foreign language proficiency, which interferes with sharing their knowledge with the others in the international arena. Taking that into consideration, this study aims to scrutinize the self-efficacy beliefs of Turkish academics regarding their oral communication in English. For this purpose, the data were collected through e-mails, and a total of 352 academics working in the departments of educational sciences participated in the study. Qualitative (document analysis) and quantitative research (survey) methods were used together in the study. The scale "A Self-efficacy Instrument for Academics’ Oral Communication in a Foreign Language" developed by Özer, Çakır & Uzun (2019), was utilized in the quantitative data collection phase. The findings were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that the self-efficacy scores of academics with respect to their oral communication in English showed no significant difference in terms of their department, academic title, academic experience, and age variable. It also turned out that there is a significant difference between self-efficacy belief scores and experience abroad, current language exam scores, and involvement in academic events abroad.
