(credit: modication of work by Cory Zanker) We may be top-notch learners, but if we don't have a way to store what we've learned, what good is the knowledge we've gained? Take a few minutes to imagine what your day might be like if you could not remember anything you had learned. You would have to gure out how to get dressed. What clothing should you wear, and how do buttons and zippers work? You would need someone to teach you how to brush your teeth and tie your shoes. Who would you ask for help with these tasks, since you wouldn't recognize the faces of these people in your house? Wait . is this even your house? Uh oh, your stomach begins to rumble and you feel hungry. A bed . what is a bed? We have an amazing capacity for memory, but how, exactly, do we process and store information? Are there dierent kinds of memory, and if so, what characterizes the dierent types? How, exactly, do we retrieve our memories? And why do we forget? Corballis The Wandering Mind What the Brain Does When You are Not Looking The University of Chicago Press, Chicago 2015, pp. 184 It is commonplace to consider mind-wandering as a secondary, useless ac- tivity of our mind to which we guiltily abandon ourselves for laziness or dis- traction. The aim of the book is to show that, far from being the slaves of a blamable indolence, every time we are absent-minded or lost in thought, we are involved in an essential mental activity. Not only is mind-wandering a funda- mental component of our life (whether we want it or not, our mind meanders at night and for half the time during the day), but it also has a constructive and adaptive function that is crucial for facing the contingencies of a complex world. Without a wandering mind we would be stuck in the present, unable to invent stories and to escape the here and now through mental time travel. Mind-wandering takes us into unexplored regions of the unconscious mind that are inaccessible to the conscious will. Not only does this capacity allows us to build and consolidate the sense of our personality but it also helps to multiply our self into imagined possible selves and to expand the range of our experience. Creativity, too, lies in the randomness of mind-wandering, which makes possible unpredictable connections of ideas. The book therefore takes into account different forms of mind-wandering. Mental traveling depends on memory, which provides the material that feeds our imagination. Memory is so important to mind-wandering that some syn- dromes, such as amnesia and hyperthymesia, can impair the ability to mind- travel.

    Memory & Cognition 2007, 35 (3), 565-577 Pleasantness bias in flashbulb memories: Positive and negative flashbulb memories of the fall of the Berlin Wall among East and West Germans ANNETTE BOHN AND DORTHE BERNTSEN Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark Flashbulb memories for the fall of the Berlin Wall were examined among 103 East and West Germans who considered the event as either highly positive or highly negative. The participants in the positive group rated their memories higher on measures of reliving and sensory imagery, whereas their memory for facts was less accurate than that of the participants in the negative group. The participants in the negative group had higher ratings on amount of consequences but had talked less about the event and considered it less central to their personal and national identity than did the participants in the positive group. In both groups, rehearsal and the centrality of the memory to the person’s identity and life story correlated positively with memory qualities. The results suggest that positive and negative emotions have different effects on the processing and long-term reten- tion of flashbulb memories. Therefore, the possibility of modifying autobiographical memories, in particular with memory-modulation and memory-erasing, is a very important topic both from the theoretical and from the practical point of view. Research shows that memory may be changed during storage, processing and retrieval, due to schema processing. Relevant examples related to studying the nature of reconstructive memory could be but are not limited to: • confabulation—a memory based on a fabricated, distorted or misinterpreted memory often believed to be true in spite of contradictory evidence • schema processing—memory processing based on prior knowledge in the form of schemas that could result in distortion • false memories—recalling an event that never happened and believing it to be true.
