Bullock The term labiodentalization is used in this dissertation to describe the linguistic phenomenon consisting in the realization of /b/, which generally corresponds to the voiced bilabial segments [b] and [β] in Standard varieties of Spanish, as the labiodental fricative consonant [v]. The main goal of this dissertation is to analyze the effects of language contact on labiodentalization of the phoneme /b/ and labial consonant variation in Texas Spanish, with special emphasis on orthography and its influence on bilingual phonology. This project analyzes labial consonant variation in the Spanish of El Paso, Texas, from the perspectives of contact and variationist sociolinguistics. Specifically, it examines (i) if Spanish speakers from El Paso produce an auditorily perceptible distinction between [v] and [β] or [b] as discrete categories; (ii) if they make an acoustically measurable distinction between these categories; and (iii) which sociolinguistic factors condition the use of and the distribution of [v] in the speech community. In pursuing these questions, a hybrid experimental approach that includes auditory and acoustic analyses for a production study is employed. Results reveal that bilingual speakers from El Paso, Texas make an auditorily perceptible distinction between the voiced bilabial and labiodental segments. Moreover, this distinction is correlated with the linguistic variables of consonant orthography and within-word position, while the most relevant social factors in relation to labiodentalization are English writing proficiency level, Spanish writing competence, and gender. Lastly, the best acoustic predictors for labial variation in the dialect examined are relative intensity and duration. iv Table of Contents List of Tables     Systemic Contrast and Catalan Rhotics* Jaye Padgett - University of California, Santa Cruz (January 2003) 1. Introduction Catalan, a Romance language spoken primarily in the northeast of Spain, has two contrasting rhotics: a tap [r] and a trill [r]. The two sounds contrast only between vowels with the distribution otherwise being predictable. The facts closely parallel the better known facts of Spanish, and the problems they raise are similar. In this paper I take a new look at Catalan rhotics, arguing that we can achieve a better account of them if we explicitly acknowledge the role of contrast in their behavior. Specifically, the explanation calls on constraints requiring that contrast be maintained, on the one hand, and on constraints requiring that contrasts be perceptually distinct, on the other. The account is cast within Dispersion Theory (Flemming 1995, to appear), which is designed to express such notions. In approaching the Catalan facts in this way I follow Bradley (2001), who applies Dispersion Theory to Spanish rhotics. Some of the main conclusions we reach differ, all the same. A good deal of recent work argues that both neutralization avoidance and perceptual distinctiveness play important roles in shaping phonologies. (Besides the above, see Ní Chiosáin and Padgett 2001, Sanders 2002, Padgett to appear-a,b, and Sanders in progress.) The theoretical framework of these works, Dispersion Theory, remains rather new, and this paper offers another case study. The appeal to contrast leads to a simpler and more explanatory account of Catalan (and Spanish) rhotics compared to previous ones. The analysis also illustrates how it is possible to incorporate more systematic phonetic detail into phonology, increasing our descriptive coverage, without predicting the overgeneration of contrast.

Catalonia (Spain) [email protected] Abstract A set of different surface effects commonly found in the phonology of natural lan- guages, voicing assimilation and final devoicing, are derived from two parameters, Reduction, the loss of phonological structure, and Spreading, the association of two unas- sociated nodes. Reduction is an operation on a node (e.g. voice), and it can take three values: no operation, Deassociation of the node, or Deletion of the node. Spreading has just the two minimal values, + and -. Spreading can combine with Reduction, or with Deassociation, resulting in two different assimilatory effects. When Spreading takes the negative value, or when contextually no spreading is possible, the surface effect that results is devoicing. The different parametric settings of Recluction and Spreading coupled with syllable control, and stages of application, predict the appropriate surfa- ce clusters of voicing effects. These results are extended to other effects like place centralization, unmarked assimilation, and to a set of residual or sporadic effects like progressive assimilation in regressive systems.     PHONEMIC INSTABILITY: A BUTTERFLY EFFECT PAROMA SANYAL REENA ASHEM Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi, India 1xxIntroduction Can an imperceptibly tiny change in the relative ranking of a markedness constraint lead to phonemic instability and ultimately sound change in a language? In this paper we predict that this could indeed be the case when the phonological processes that take place within a certain morpho-phonological domain result in a particular phoneme being reinterpreted as marked by new learners of the language. According to McCarthy and Prince (1994), The Emergence of the Unmarked is a generalization about markedness constraints that are otherwise invisible in a language becoming visible in certain marked domains. While a markedness constraint C 'in the language as a whole, may be roundly violated, but in a particular domain it is obeyed exactly.' Now imagine the scenario where a markedness constraint C is ranked so low in the language that it is invisible for all practical purposes. However, when the satisfaction of a complex set of well-formedness constraints within a marked domain coincides with a systematic violation of C, it is possible for new learners of the language to re-rank C higher in the language. Thus the surface realization of phonological well-formedness conditions, if coincidentally localized to particular phonemes, rather than being distributed over a range of environments, could trigger phonemic instability and eventual sound change in the language. The Tibeto-Burman language Meiteilon, spoken in the state of Manipur in India, we claim, has a similar reanalysis taking place in its current phonological grammar. Meiteilon, like most other Tibeto-Burman languages of the region has rich inflectional morphology that attaches as suffixes to monosyllabic nominal or verbal roots.

I hypothesise that coronal nasal behaves differently in different assimilatory situations in classical Arabic. Data of the study were collected from the Holy Quran. It was referred to Quran.com for the pronunciations and translations of the data. Data of the study were analysed from the perspective of Mohanan’s dominance in assimilation model. Findings of the study have revealed that coronal nasal shows different assimilatory behaviours when it occurs in different syllable positions. Coronal nasal onset seems to fail to assimilate a whole or a portion of the matrix of a preceding obstruent or sonorant coda within a phonological word.     3 More on Phonemes 3.1 Phonemic Analysis and Writing The question of phonemicization is in principle independent from the question of writing; that is, there is no necessary connection between letters and phonemes. For example, the English phoneme /e}/ can be spelled in quite a few ways: say /se}/, Abe /e}b/, main /me}n/, beige /be}è/, reggae /cryge}/, H /e}tà/. Indeed, there are languages (for example, Mandarin Chinese) that are written with symbols that do not correspond to phonemes at all. Obviously, there is at least a loose connection between alphabetic letters and phonemes: the designers of an alphabet tend to match up the written symbols with the phonemes of a language. Moreover, the conscious intuitions of speakers about sounds tend to be heavily influenced by their knowledge of spelling – after all, most literate speakers receive extensive training in how to spell during child- hood, but no training at all in phonology. Writing is prestigious, and our spoken pronunciations are sometimes felt to be imperfect realizations of what is written. This is reflected in the common occur- rence of spelling pronunciations, which are pronunciations that have no historical basis, but which arise as attempts to mimic the spelling, as in often [cÑftvn] or palm [pwlm]. In contrast, most linguists feel that spoken language is primary, and that written language is a derived system, which is mostly parasitic off the spoken language and is often rather artificial in character. Some reasons that support this view are that spoken language is far older than writing, it is acquired first and with greater ease by children, and it is the common property of our species, rather than of just an educated subset of it.

Introduction In the last tutorial we started to look at manner of articulation - the type and degree of obstruction of the airflow when consonants are made. We have already looked at the oral stops and the nasal stops. In this tutorial we will look at the manner of articulation of some more types of consonants. Fricatives With all the sounds that we’ve discussed so far (the stops) there’s a brief complete obstruction of the airflow. If we bring one articulator very close to another, the airflow can pass between the two articulators but has to go through a very narrow passage, creating a kind of noise. The sounds made in this way are fricatives. Usually with fricatives the velum is raised, so that air can’t escape out of the nose, though it’s continuously passing through the narrow passage out of the mouth. English doesn’t have bilabial fricatives, though some languages, including Spanish, do. English has labiodental fricatives, where the lower lip comes close to or touches the upper front teeth; the voiceless and voiced labiodental fricatives are the initial sounds in fine and vine, the symbols for them being [f] and [v] respectively. There are two sounds in English written as <th> - as in thing and this. These are voiceless and voiced dental fricatives respectively. The IPA symbols for these are [θ] and [ð]. 1 MODULE 5 - COMMUNICATION FOUNDATIONS ACCESSTRUTH English also has voiced and voiceless alveolar fricatives, as in the words sue and zoo - here we bring the tip or blade of the tongue very close to the alveolar ridge - and the symbols for them are [s] and [z].

    Phonological degrees of labiality February 5, 2018 Abstract A [+round] or [labial] feature is traditionally viewed as an elementary phonological unit that has different phonetic realizations depending on the height and backness of the segment that realizes it (Clements and Hume 1995, McCarthy 1988, Halle 1995, Kaun 1997 among oth- ers). In this paper, I make two claims: a) qualitatively different lip-gestures are phonological in some languages, and b) there is more faithfulness to more extreme lip gestures. 1 Introduction While it has long been known that rounding is not realized uniformly across vowel heights, this fact has been considered purely phonetic. This paper proposes an analysis of a phonological phenomenon involving a transfer of labiality from a vowel to a consonant under certain conditions. I argue that the Karata data support the idea that differences in rounding can be phonological1. Karata (kir¯Ïi maţ¯’i, Russian karatinskij jazyk)2 is an understudied Nakh-Daghestanian lan- guage originally spoken in 10 ‘auls’ (i.e. mountain-top villages) in western Daghestan.3 The available literature on Karata consists of a grammatical sketch [Magomedbekova, 1971] , and a dictionary (Karata to Russian) [Magomedova and Khalidova, 2001]. The data presented in this paper come from fieldwork that I carried out in June 2011 and July 2012 and from the above mentioned sources. The structure of the paper is the following. Section 2 gives an overview of the phenomenon investigated and its proposed analysis. Section 3 provides background information on the phonol- ogy of Karata. Section 4 is dedicated to the OT analysis of the Karata.
