About the College The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, formerly Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia, is the only four-year, state-supported college in far southwestern Virginia and is a division of the University of Virginia. Situated on 396 acres in Wise County, UVa-Wise is an incredible example of the determination and perseverance of southwestern Virginia citizens. Before the College was created, there were no public colleges in Virginia west of Radford. Higher education was simply out of reach for most residents of Virginia’s Appalachian Mountains. When local residents Fred B. Greear, William A. Thompson, Kenneth P. Asbury, affectionately known as the “Three Wise Men,” and others made their case to University of Virginia President Colgate Darden for establishing a college in Wise, the Commonwealth of Virginia supported the cause by offering $5,000 to open, staff, and operate the two-year school for the fi rst year. Local supporters donated over $6,000 to furnish and equip the classrooms. Wise County donated property and two sandstone buildings, remnants of the county poor farm, to house the fi rst classes. All of these events happened in the winter of 1954. In September of that same year, Clinch Valley College opened its doors to 100 freshmen. Many of the fi rst classes of graduates went on to the University and other senior institutions and became some of the region’s most successful professionals.

Petersen Date: 15 October 2019 Article Number: 319-2019-17 Besides Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune and most all Sports, the two regular TV shows I like to watch are NCIS and Criminal Minds. I decided to write this article about someone from these shows and I picked Mark Harmon because I find his life to be the most interesting. Family Thomas Mark Harmon was born in Burbank, California on September 2, 1951, which makes him 68 years old. He was the youngest of three children. His parents were Heisman Trophy–winning football player and broadcaster Tom Harmon and actress, model, artist, and fashion designer Elyse Knox. Harmon’s two older sisters are the late actress and painter Kristin Nelson, who was divorced from the late singer Rick Nelson, and actress and model Kelly Harmon, formerly married to car magnate John DeLorean. Yes, Mark’s dad was a famous football player at the Mark Harmon’s Parents University of Michigan. He played the halfback position Tom Harmon and wife from 1938 to 1940. He led the nation in scoring and was Elyse Knox a consensus All-American in both 1939 and 1940 and won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Associated Press Athlete of the Year award in 1940. His nickname was "Old 98" which I find somewhat unusual for a halfback! He played in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams for a couple of seasons. He was also a military pilot and a sports broadcaster. He died at age 70 in Los Angeles.

Right now, anytime someone mentions Fats Waller’s name, why, you can see the grins on all the faces, as if to say, “Yea, yea, yes, yes, Fats is a solid sender, ain’t he?” — Louis Armstrong More than six decades have passed since Louis Armstrong eulogized his friend shortly after his untimely death at 39, and as always, Satchmo stuck just the right note. As this marvelous collection proves, the joyous spirit of Fats Waller is as alive as ever, to seasoned fans and first-time listeners alike. Thomas Wright Waller, the seventh of 11 children born to Adaline and Edward Waller, six of whom died in childhood, came into this world on May 21, 1904 in New York City— some sources say in Greenwich Village, others claim Harlem. In any case, the family did live on Waverley place but moved uptown during Tom’s early childhood. Spurred on by a girlfriend's crush on Elvis Presley, Ricky bragged that he too was about to cut a record, and then quickly enlisted his father to make this boast a reality. In April 1957, the 16 -year -old Ricky re- leased a cover version of Fats Domino's big hit "I'm Walkin." As was his habit, Ozzie integrated this latest preoccupation of his son into a television episode, and l t' "Ricky the Drummer" aired concurrently with the record's release. He was 96. Catherine Turk, his daughter, confirmed his death. Mr. Cady played Sam Drucker for nearly a decade on the two shows, both set in the fictional town of Hooterville. Mr. Drucker was a bit of a straight man to the colorfully zany folk who populated the series, both on CBS. His general store was the closest thing Hooterville had to a social club, and unlike the shops in neighboring Pixley, Drucker’s extended credit. Mr. Cady’s Sam Drucker also appeared occasionally on a third homespun comedy, “The Beverly Hillbillies.” All three shows were produced by Paul Henning. Critics found the shows simple-minded, but in 1990 Mr. Cady defended “Green Acres,” about a city couple who move to the country. “The only thing I resent is people calling it a corny show,” he told CBS News. “It’s highly sophisticated, and it’s timeless, as I think all the reruns are establishing.” Mr. Cady had an extensive career outside of Drucker’s store.
