Taking photos from your seats during the ceremony is allowed, but we request that guests respect each other’s comfort and enjoyment by not standing and blocking other people’s views. Photos of graduates can be purchased from GradImages: gradimages.com or (800) 261-2576. The Johns Hopkins University is strongly committed to protecting the environment and practicing sustainability at all of our campuses. Today is no exception. Once again, this year’s ceremony will be carbon neutral and zero waste. By using plant-based biodiesel to power the equipment on Homewood Field, we are avoiding fossil fuels and the associated impact on climate change. And since all waste will be composted or recycled, it will go to productive reuse instead of being incinerated. We are also highlighting our sustainability principles during Commencement in other ways: this program is printed on post-consumer recycled-content paper; our caterers are local and specialize in green practices; and most information was posted on the Internet to cut down on printed materials. We invite you to join our efforts to be sustainable by placing your bottles and cans in the green bins and all your food and paper waste in the yellow bins. • Feature Gater Inage
Auf einem unscheinbaren Schild steht Aishinkakurafuketsukagū (愛新覚羅溥傑仮寓), also „Vorübergehende Residenz (kari no gū) von Aishinkakura Fuketsu (Pujie)“. Heute ist es ein Museum der Stadt Chiba. Mit der chinesischen Revolution von 1911 und der Gründung der chinesischen Repub- lik unter Sun Yat-sen hatte der letzte Kaiser Puyi als junger Mann noch eine erstaunli- che Laufbahn vor sich.

  • 2018-19 Catalog
This Catalog may be revised periodically and printed copies may not be up to date. Please view the online Catalog at https://www.uvawise.edu/academics/academic-affairs/college-catalog/ for the latest version. About the College The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, formerly Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia, is the only four-year, state-supported college in far southwestern Virginia and is a division of the University of Virginia. Situated on 396 acres in Wise County, UVa-Wise is an incredible example of the determination and perseverance of southwestern Virginia citizens. Before the College was created, there were no public colleges in Virginia west of Radford. Higher education was simply out of reach for most residents of Virginia’s Appalachian Mountains. When local residents Fred B. Greear, William A. Thompson, Kenneth P. Asbury, affectionately known as the “Three Wise Men,” and others made their case to University of Virginia President Colgate Darden for establishing a college in Wise, the Commonwealth of Virginia supported the cause by offering $5,000 to open, staff, and operate the two-year school for the fi rst year. Local supporters donated over $6,000 to furnish and equip the classrooms. Wise County donated property and two sandstone buildings, remnants of the county poor farm, to house the fi rst classes. All of these events happened in the winter of 1954. In September of that same year, Clinch Valley College opened its doors to 100 freshmen. Many of the fi rst classes of graduates went on to the University and other senior institutions and became some of the region’s most successful professionals.

  • Westernisation, Ideology and National Identity in 20Th-Century Chinese Music
Westernisation, Ideology and National Identity in 20th-Century Chinese Music Yiwen Ouyang PhD Thesis Royal Holloway, University of London DECLARATION OF AUTHORSHIP I, Yiwen Ouyang, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 19 May 2012 I To my newly born baby II ABSTRACT The twentieth century saw the spread of Western art music across the world as Western ideology and values acquired increasing dominance in the global order. How did this process occur in China, what complexities does it display and what are its distinctive features? This thesis aims to provide a detailed and coherent understanding of the Westernisation of Chinese music in the 20th century, focusing on the ever-changing relationship between music and social ideology and the rise and evolution of national identity as expressed in music. This thesis views these issues through three crucial stages: the early period of the 20th century which witnessed the transition of Chinese society from an empire to a republic and included China’s early modernisation; the era from the 1930s to 1940s comprising the Japanese intrusion and the rising of the Communist power; and the decades of economic and social reform from 1978 onwards. The thesis intertwines the concrete analysis of particular pieces of music with social context and demonstrates previously overlooked relationships between these stages. It also seeks to illustrate in the context of the appropriation of Western art music how certain concepts acquired new meanings in their translation from the European to the Chinese context, for example modernity, Marxism, colonialism, nationalism, tradition, liberalism, and so on.

  • STING 21309 Making Your Mind up Vocal By: Stefan Sidholm
STING 21309 Making Your Mind Up vocal by: Stefan Sidholm Release Date: MP3 and CD – 2015 / 11 and Jack Borgström Originally Released as part of the 2013 Edition Singing Call MS-66 of the Sting Productions Ambassador Club Hanhurst’s Best Seller listing: (see the home page for more details about this) Original artist: Bucks Fizz (November 201 5) – TBA Bucks Fizz are most famous for winning the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Making Your Mind Up ", the group was formed in January 1981 specifically for the contest and comprised four vocalists: Bobby G , Cheryl Baker , Mike Nolan and Jay Aston . They achieved instant attention with the dance routine, which accompanied the song, involving a skirt-rip; they went on to have a successful career around the world (albeit ignored in the United States), with record sales in excess of 15 million. This song had always been in the “back of my mind” as an idea for a Sting tune, the biggest problem was trying to find a way to speed it up without making it sound too “rushed”. One of the fantastic advantages of the Ambassador Club paradigm, allowed us to try “other studios”, where we might try to experiment with different tune structures. As can be heard - we achieved our intention with this recording. This is a superb “first tip” number, guaranteed to prompt the dancers to sing-a-long! Additional Lyrics: Music: the where, when and who... You gotta speed it up and then you gotta slow it down The music for this release was created in Texas, at the Studio Cos if you believe that a love can hit the top you gotta play around used for Global Music Productions, by producer emeritus: and soon you will find that there comes a time for making your mind up Doug Bennett.

Even during the past five years, when the economy was in better shape than it is now, it had become increasingly clear that the College did not have funds or personnel sufficient to accomplish comfortably all the activities it currently undertakes. In view of these challenges, the College leadership began a process of re- examination in an effort to find economies of scale, explore new collaborations, and spur creative thinking and cooperation.

  • Inventing Chinese Buddhas: Identity, Authority, and Liberation in Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism
Inventing Chinese Buddhas: Identity, Authority, and Liberation in Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism Kevin Buckelew Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Kevin Buckelew All rights reserved Abstract Inventing Chinese Buddhas: Identity, Authority, and Liberation in Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism Kevin Buckelew This dissertation explores how Chan Buddhists made the unprecedented claim to a level of religious authority on par with the historical Buddha Śākyamuni and, in the process, invented what it means to be a buddha in China. This claim helped propel the Chan tradition to dominance of elite monastic Buddhism during the Song dynasty (960–1279), licensed an outpouring of Chan literature treated as equivalent to scripture, and changed the way Chinese Buddhists understood their own capacity for religious authority in relation to the historical Buddha and the Indian homeland of Buddhism. But the claim itself was fraught with complication. After all, according to canonical Buddhist scriptures, the Buddha was easily recognizable by the “marks of the great man” that adorned his body, while the same could not be said for Chan masters in the Song. What, then, distinguished Chan masters from everyone else? What authorized their elite status and granted them the authority of buddhas? According to what normative ideals did Chan aspirants pursue liberation, and by what standards did Chan masters evaluate their students to determine who was worthy of admission into an elite Chan lineage? How, in short, could one recognize a buddha in Song-dynasty China? The Chan tradition never answered this question once and for all; instead, the question broadly animated Chan rituals, institutional norms, literary practices, and visual cultures.

Masters of Scale Episode Transcript – Barack Obama part 2 “President Barack Obama, part 2: How to adapt to changing rules” Click here to listen to the full Masters of Scale episode featuring Barack Obama. BARACK OBAMA: I said, the day the healthcare bill passed, "You guys have to make this website work. The only thing that matters right now is that this has to work." REID HOFFMAN: That’s the unmistakable voice of America’s 44th president, Barack Obama. We’re back with part two of our special two-part episode, and if you haven’t listened to part one, go back and do that now! We talked a bit in our last episode about President Obama’s latest book, A Promised Land. It’s full of insights into landmark events from his first term in office, like the 2008 financial crisis, passing the Affordable Care Act, and the raid on Osama bin Laden. The president is working on Volume Two as we speak, which will cover his second term. But there’s one second-term story that I couldn’t help asking about anyway. HOFFMAN: HealthCare.gov, which on the first pass, of course, was traditional government tech– OBAMA: It was a disaster. HOFFMAN: Disaster. Right? HOFFMAN: President Obama said it first! So I don’t feel too bad saying that the rollout of the healthcare exchange marketplace wasn’t just bad … It was shockingly bad. Obama was expected to be the tech president. His campaign wrote the playbook on leveraging social media to win grassroots donations. He was the first to appoint a Chief Technology Officer for the country.
