  • Transformation of Water Transportation in Bangkok from the “Venice of East” Towards the “Jungle of Concrete”
Transformation of Water Transportation in Bangkok from the “Venice of East” towards the “Jungle of Concrete” Pawinee IAMTRAKUL1, Waleerat THONGPLU2 1Lecturer, 2Student, Department of Urban Environmental Planning and Development, Faculty of Architecture and Planning, Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus Khlong Luang, Pathumthani, Thailand 12121 Tel. +66 (0) 2986 9605-6 Abstract: Once, perhaps too long ago for the young and new generation to realize, Bangkok used to be known as the “Venice of the East”. Such pride and privilege has long perished due to the fact that the once dominating mode of city transport, the water based transport, has gradually lost its significant role to the road based transport system. Since the 20th Century, transport development in Bangkok witnessed a rapid transformation from water based transport to road based transport. Most of waterway networks have been paved over with roads that have resulted to the low serviceability of the existing system in several dimensions of problem (i.e. inadequate accessibility, lack of inter-modal linkages, safety). This paper intends to highlight the existing service of public water transportation by selecting a case study of express boat service in Bangkok. It aims to present an overview of its service together with its role and characteristics. In addition, this paper also intends to recommend actionable measures to improve the service and make it effective to share the existing burden on the road based transportation system and alleviate traffic congestion thereby. Keywords: Bangkok, Water Transport, Sustainable Transportation System. 1. Introduction Bangkok was found as capital of Thailand in 1782 by King Rama I with its ironically the original name of Bangkok, “Krupthep” in Thai also means “Great City of the Angels”.

Thailand KrungThep Bridge Construction Project Report Date: January 2003 Field Survey: November 2002 1. Project Profile and Japan’s ODA Loan Myanmar Laos Hanoi Vientiane Yangon Thailand Project site Bangkok Cambodia Vietnam Phnom Penh Site map: Bangkok New Krung Thep Bridge 1.1 Background At the time of planning, there was no railway-based means of mass transportation in the city of Bangkok, which depended almost entirely on roads for intra-city transportation. The rapid economic growth and the increase in the number of vehicles in the early 1990s added to the volume of road transportation, making road congestion even more serious. Traffic congestion was also seen on the bridges that spanned the Chao Phraya River in the city. Particularly, the traffic for the Krung Thep Bridge, which played an important role as part of the Middle-Ring Road, had continued to grow each year, reaching 99,700 vehicles per day in 1991. With economic and population growth, it was predicted that the traffic would increase to about 1.5 times the 1991 level in 2001 and 1.8 times in 2010, and it was feared that traffic congestion would become even more serious. The main reason for traffic congestion around the bridge was that the Middle-Ring Road had six to eight lanes throughout its course while the Krung Thep Bridge had only four lanes and that the bascule bridge had to be lifted two to three times a week on request. In addition, because more than 30 years had elapsed since the bridge was constructed, it was becoming increasingly old, and the traffic of heavy vehicles had been restricted since 1988.
