  • History and Current Status of Systematic Research with Araceae
HISTORY AND CURRENT STATUS OF SYSTEMATIC RESEARCH WITH ARACEAE Thomas B. Croat Missouri Botanical Garden P. O. Box 299 St. Louis, MO 63166 U.S.A. Note: This paper, originally published in Aroideana Vol. 21, pp. 26–145 in 1998, is periodically updated onto the IAS web page with current additions. Any mistakes, proposed changes, or new publications that deal with the systematics of Araceae should be brought to my attention. Mail to me at the address listed above, or e-mail me at [email protected]. Last revised November 2004 INTRODUCTION The history of systematic work with Araceae has been previously covered by Nicolson (1987b), and was the subject of a chapter in the Genera of Araceae by Mayo, Bogner & Boyce (1997) and in Curtis's Botanical Magazine new series (Mayo et al., 1995). In addition to covering many of the principal players in the field of aroid research, Nicolson's paper dealt with the evolution of family concepts and gave a comparison of the then current modern systems of classification. The papers by Mayo, Bogner and Boyce were more comprehensive in scope than that of Nicolson, but still did not cover in great detail many of the participants in Araceae research. In contrast, this paper will cover all systematic and floristic work that deals with Araceae, which is known to me. It will not, in general, deal with agronomic papers on Araceae such as the rich literature on taro and its cultivation, nor will it deal with smaller papers of a technical nature or those dealing with pollination biology.

A FLORISTIC SURVEY ON THE GOZITAN ISLETS OF TAĊ-ĊAWL AND TAL-ĦALFA IN THE MALTESE ARCHIPELAGO Stephen Mifsud Citation: Mifsud, S. (2011).A FLORISTIC SURVEY ON THE GOZITAN ISLETS OF TAC-CAWL AND TAL-HALFA IN THE MALTESE ISLANDS". MaltaWildPlants.com Online Publications; Ref: MWPOP-001. URL: http://www.MaltaWildPlants.com/publ/index.php#W01 Abstract A floristic survey was carried out on the islets of Tal-Ħalfa and Taċ-Ċawl, both situated just off the Southern coast of Gozo. The aim was to confirm or otherwise results of a recent study (Sciberras & Sciberras, 2010) which concluded that a number of species had become extinct or doubtful when compared to an earlier work (Cassar and Lanfranco, 2000). The present work confirms the occurrence of most of the species found by Cassar and Lanfranco and in addition reports on the discovery of a significant number of new records of legally protected or rare vascular plants. Taxonomical notes concerning a few ambiguous plants which were discovered are discussed. Keywords Flora, Taċ-Ċawl, Tal-Ħalfa, Islets, Maltese Islands 1: Introduction After reading an article (Sciberras & Sciberras, 2010) regarding surveys carried out on the islets around the Maltese islands, the author decided to visit and survey the flora of the islets of Taċ-Ċawl and Tal-Ħalfa. The reason being that of a substantial number of discrepancies between this article and an earlier survey (Cassar and Lanfranco, 2000). It was surprising to read that after visiting each site at least “four times each season from the period 1998-2010” the authors had only found 24 and 21 species for Taċ-Ċawl and Tal-Ħalfa Rocks respectively.

Several studies have focused on the effects of these plantations on agricultural production. Prior scholarship reveals that shelterbelts enhance the diversity of bird and insect communities but generally fail to consider herbaceous cover. Our study aimed to describe the herbaceous vegetation in shelterbelts of different origins, tree species composition, and land management. We investigated surveys in four agricultural landscapes of North West Hungary, where the intensity of the landscape transformation is different. The diversity and species composition of the herbaceous vegetation were analyzed, including plant sociology and forest affinity. Our results highlight the importance of landscape history in herbaceous flora. A sketch of their vegetation pattern is also provided, as well as a list of all the terrestrial fauna, with some more detailed information on the vertebrates. The finding of some bones of Mustela nivalis Linnaeus, 1758 is the first record for the whole archipelago and deserves further investigations. The floristic data have been used in order to analyze life-form and chorological spectra and to assess species-area relationship, the peculiarity of local plant assemblages, the occurrence of islet specialists, the risk of alien plants invasion and the refugium role played by the islets. The significant differences among the check-lists compiled by the two different couples of authors during their own visits to Prèveto and Galeotta underline the need of planning regular and standardized field investigations in order to avoid an overestimation of local species turnover rates.

Medit. 24: 51-62. 2014. — ISSN: 1120- 4052 printed, 2240-4538 online. The common European Arum maculatum L. is an acknowledged medicinal plant. Although the uses of the plant are widely acknowledged, little is known about the actual exploitation poten- tial in natural and cultivated conditions. We aim to address this question. The first step in know- ing if a resource is exploitable is checking where the plant is present. In this study, we first gathered information based on a critical revision of the deposited herbar- ium samples of genus Arum L. in the national Bulgarian herbaria. Secondly, we organized this information in a database, which was used to construct UTM-grid maps of the current known distribution of the taxa in Bulgaria. Thirdly, we compiled the presented information on the UTM-grid maps together with our field study data which we collected during the period April – July 2013 by visiting locations known from the literature and from the herbarium vouchers (see above) and checking for the presence of Arum. When considering the potential exploitation of the plant in natural conditions, our preliminary field survey suggests a more limited potential in Bulgaria, when compared to previous investi- gations. Also, the fact that the proper identification is difficult even to specialists could lead to a serious hazard, since plant collectors may confuse species, and thus may improperly use them.

Recently, anumber of new genera and species were described on the basis of the DNA sequence data and morphological observations. The peculiar genus Phyllosiphon, which forms amonophyletic clade within the Watanabea clade, is characterized by forming siphonous parasitic stages thriving in the leaves of the Araceae. In addition, several previous studies demonstrated that members of the genus Phyllosiphon also include free-living chlorelloid individuals that occur on various subaerial substrates.Anumber of Phyllosiphon members sampled from European subaerial microhabitats have so far not been taxonomically described, because they were not available in cultures. In this study, weprovide ataxonomic description of anew species of the genus Phyllosiphon, P. duini, isolated from acorticolous biofilm growing on Quercus pubescens in asub- Mediterranean forest stand. The simple chlorelloid morphology of this strain did not unambiguously distinguish Phyllosiphon duini from other closely related members of the Watanabea clade. However, phylogenetic analyses based on the 18S rDNA sequences showed that this species clustered in asister position to a Phyllosiphon species previously described from eastern Asia. Similar phylogenetic pattern was also supported by the plastid-encoded rbcLgene sequences of members of the Watanabea clade. Our data demonstrate that the genus Phyllosiphon represents adiverse phylogenetic lineage within the subaerial chlorelloid green microalgae of the Watanabea clade.
