Culture and Intercultural Communication
Culture and intercultural communication Due to the rapid development of science and technology, the proliferation of research activity and our continuously changing social, political, economic and cultural context constantly force us to evaluate and re-evaluate our knowledge and put our skills to the test. This volume offers insights into some of the new developments of theory and research in Cultural and Intercultural Studies that may equip students, teachers and researchers with up-to-date information regarding the state of the art of these fields of study. The fourteen contributions by different authors are organized into three Culture and main parts and address both the theoretical and the practical/pedagogical aspects of language learning, teaching and intercultural research. Part I focuses on the teaching of culture and intercultural communication and reveals important theoretical considerations communication and best practices. Part 2 of the volume presents the findings of empirical research on intercultural communication and the Research and education development of intercultural competence. The geographical orientations of the articles are also diverse. Although Part III is devoted to one area in particular, Australian Studies, the volume also contains Edited by Krisztina Károly, papers relating to Hungary, Great Britain and New Zealand, as well as Ildikó Lázár and Cecilia Gall C North and South America. Made up of 265 items, the series were produced y !ohn "rampton #hilpot, orn in the $% and settled in &lorence in the middle of the '(th century, then donated to the museum y &erenc #uls)*y in '+6+. ,urned to e-ile in '+.(, #uls)*y inherited his elated uncle/s valua le ivory collection, which was e-hi ited in 0ondon in '+51. 2ince technologies which made it possi le for sensitive artefacts to e reproduced without any damage done to the original had ecome available y that time, #uls)*y gave authori)ation, upon re3uest of his colleagues at 2outh %ensington Museum, for the reproduction of his ivory collection. In '+61 #uls)*y started to live in &lorence, where he got into professional contact with #hilpot and is li*ely to have een instrumental in the ma*ing of the a ove photo series of fictile ivory. #hilpot pu lished an individual catalogue of these series, which despite its misspellings and erroneous data has provided great assistance in identifying the photographs from "udapest. -

The Two Faces of the Hungarian Empire

Bálint Varga Eötvös Loránd Research Network, Institute of History, Budapest, Hungary Corresponding author: Bálint Varga, email: [email protected] Abstract This article investigates the uses of the term “Hungarian Empire” during the long nineteenth century. It argues that the term “empire” emerged in the Hungarian political discourse in the Vormärz era and it was used to denote the imagined integrity of Hungary proper, Transylvania, Croatia, Slavonia, and eventually Dalmatia on the grounds of the historic rights of the Holy Crown of Hungary in the form of a composite https://www.cambridge.org/core/terms nation-state. This usage of the term became ubiquitous after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise. A second meaning pertaining to imperialist foreign policy entered the dictionary of Hungarian political discourse in the late nineteenth century. Fed by the recently created memory of the medieval Hungarian great power, sev- eral pressure groups in fin-de-siècle Hungary lobbied for a Hungarian (informal) empire in Southeastern Europe and beyond. While several lobby groups were firmly embedded in the framework of the Austro- Hungarian monarchy, some of these visionaries imagined a Hungarian empire independent from the Habsburg structures. A short comparison with the Croatian and Czech political discourses illuminates that the first meaning of empire (composite nation-state) did not differ in substance from contemporary ter- minology in other Habsburg lands but the second meaning (imperialism) was indeed a unique phenomenon in the Habsburg monarchy. KÁROLY PULSZKY AND THE FLORENTINE ACQUISITIONS FOR THE SZÉPMÚ´VÉSZETI MÚZEUM IN BUDAPEST BETWEEN 1893 AND 1895 by Ildikó Fehér As director of the Hungarian National Picture Gallery (Országos Képtár) in Budapest, Károly Pulszky (1853–1899) played a decisive role in the expansion of the museum that later became the Museum of Fine Arts (Szépmú´vészeti Múzeum). The Gallery, which previously bought works from the major collections of the Hungarian nobility, was considerably enlarged during the 1890s through Pulszky’s acquisitions in Italy. Newly discovered documents concerning his purchases in Florence, published here for the first time, offer an opportunity to examine Pulszky’s activity from a much broader point of view. The examination of his work as a collector and museum founder is even more timely as these activities represent the lesser known and seldom appreci- ated chapters of his life, despite the numerous fictional stories his tragic fate has inspired. These biographies show a genius who was first envied and then despised by his peers, while also giving a detailed account of the lawsuit launched against him by the Hungarian parliament and the false accusations that led to the director’s exile in Australia in 1899, and finally to his suicide.1 The first studies of Pulszky’s extraordinary achievements as an art historian and museum founder were only published 89 years after his death, by László Mravik, on the occasion of an exhibition of works he had acquired. Mravik is to be credited with having drawn up a catalogue of the director’s foreign purchases based on archival documents in the Museum of Fine Arts of Budapest.2 The documents recently discovered in Florence amend or correct our knowledge of several aspects of his acquisitions. -

Portrait of Imre Henszlmann Abstract Initially, history of architecture, theory of architecture and monuments preservation were strictly interlaced in Hungary, for that Imre Henszlmann, scholar of history of arts (1813-1888) is to be credited with, having spent enormous energy on disclosing, systematizing remnants of Hungarian architecture history, on organizing protection and reconstruction. "To the memory of J enn Major. 140 A. I:lORVATII A main goal of his scientific activity has been to develop a theory of architecture, ex pected to help - in addition to disclose "fundamentals" of the universal development of architecture, - integration of remnants of Hungarian architecture to the history of European architecture. At the 1988 centenarY of the decease of Imre Henszlmann. a memorial exhibition was held at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Budapest. Exhibited selec tions of his drawings and publications represented three trends of his rich activities actually delivered at three sections those of History of Architecture, of Monuments Preservation, and of Theory of Architeeture. of the Institute of History and Theory of Architecture. In the paper. the life path of Imre Henszlmalln will be recapitulated, complemented with some documents from the exhibition, that were but partly published to now, and await careful analysis. Imre Henszlmann was born October 13, 1313, in Kassa (now Kosice, Chechoslovakia). After his secondary schools in Eperjes (Presov),he studied med icine in Pesth, then in Vienna. -

Júlia Papp “PRESENT OF FERENCZ PULSZKY” JOHN BRAMPTON PHILPOT’S PHOTOGRAPHS OF FICTILE IVORY IN THE HUNGARIAN NATIONAL MUSEUM* Searching in the photographic archives of the Hungarian National Museum’s central ductive techniques (drawings, etchings, plaster casts and electrotypes, paper mosaics, database, you can find a series of photographs (in Box. no. 30) consisting of 265 items, photographs, post cards in mass production and distribution, reproducing replicas of taken around 1850, depicting copies of ivories (fictile ivory) from the ancient, medie- statues for cultural purposes5) of art treasures.6 A series of photographs made of fic- val and early modern ages. Dry-stamped by the artist with the inscription “J. B. Phil- tile ivory, that is, a copy of copies, proves a useful illustration of the mutual influence pot Firenze Lungo l’Arno”, 151 out of these items are of a larger format (27,4×19,7 these reproductive techniques exert on each other.7 cms), while the remaining 114 are of a smaller format (11,5×6,7 cms) and completed with only a note on the verso saying “J. B. Philpot Firenze Borgo Ognissanti No 17”1 – thus the photographs were taken by John Brampton Philpot (1812–1878),2 born in England (Maidstone) and settled in Florence in 1850. The back of each of these items Art Reproductions in the Second Half is provided with the registration date of 1871 and a manuscript inscription, which of the 19th Century reads “by courtesy of Ferenc Pulszky”; that is to say, the series were donated by Ferenc Pulszky to the library of the museum, which had come under his direction in 1869 (Fig. -
