Coralwatch, and photo quadrat surveys (analysed using Coral Point Count software) were also carried out at most locations. An effort-based whale shark survey was carried out at Maamigili reef to the south of Ari atoll for five hours, with no sightings. • Maldives Sharkwatch Report 2009 - 2010
Maldives Sharkwatch Report 2009 - 2010 Maldives Sharkwatch Report for 2009 - 2010 Mohamed Ushan1 and Elizabeth Wood2 1 Marine Research Centre Maldives; 2 Marine Conservation Society UK Summary o The aim of Sharkwatch is to collect baseline data on the distribution and abundance of reef sharks throughout the Maldives and to monitor changes in populations following introduction of the reef shark fishing ban on 01 March 2009. o Despite the ban, some shark fishing is still going on because the export ban is not yet fully implemented. o Sharkwatch was launched in July 2009 by the Marine Research Centre as part of the Darwin Reef Fish Project. It is the second large scale underwater survey of sharks in Maldivian waters. A similar programme was launched by the Ministry of Tourism a few years ago, but for various reasons did not continue as planned. o Sharkwatch uses the Roving Diver Technique in which all sharks seen during a dive of approximately 45 - 50 minutes are recorded. o Fourteen Dive Centres participated in Sharkwatch over the period June 2009 – July 2010, covering Baa Atoll, South Male’ Atoll, North Male’ Atoll, Rasdhoo Atoll.and Lhaviyan Atoll. o A total of 1661 Sharkwatch surveys were carried out at 196 sites. o Sharks were seen at 85% of sites surveyed. 44% of sites had an average of 1-2 sharks recorded per survey and only 3% of sites had an average of more than 10 sharks recorded per survey (Figure 2). o The ‘top site’ for sharks had an average of over 27 sharks / survey (n= 4 surveys conducted) while the second best site had 21 sharks / survey (n= 5 surveys conducted).

  • "Rights" Side of Life
THE “RIGHTS” SIDE OF LIFE - A BASELINE HUMAN RIGHTS SURVEY 1 2 THE “RIGHTS” SIDE OF LIFE - A BASELINE HUMAN RIGHTS SURVEY HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION OF THE MALDIVES THE “RIGHTS” SIDE OF LIFE - A BASELINE HUMAN RIGHTS SURVEY SURVEY REPORT This survey was sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme, Maldives and the report written by Peter Hosking, Senior Consultant, UNDP THE “RIGHTS” SIDE OF LIFE - A BASELINE HUMAN RIGHTS SURVEY 3 Foreword This is the first general human rights survey undertaken in the Maldives. The information it contains about Maldivians’ awareness of the Human Rights Commission, and their knowledge about and attitudes towards human rights will form the Commission’s priorities in the years ahead. The events of September 2003 (riots in the prison and the streets of Male’) led to the announcement by the President, on June 9, 2004, of a programme of democratic reforms. Along with the establishment of the HRCM were proposals to create an independent judiciary and an independent Parliament. Once in place, these reforms will herald a new era for the Maldives, where human rights are respected by the authorities and enjoyed by all. To date, only limited progress has been made with the reform programme. Even in relation to the Commission, although it was established on Human Rights Day, 10 December 2003, by decree, there have been delays in passing its founding law. Then there were deficiencies in the law when it was passed and amendments are required. There has also been a delay in the appointment of the Commission’s members. While this situation is greatly inhibiting the Commission’s ability to function at full capacity, some activities have been possible, including the undertaking of this baseline survey with the generous assistance of UNDP.

  • Impacts Pf the Indian Ocean Tsunami on the Maldives Islands
2004 INDIAN OCEAN TSUNAMI ON THE MALDIVES ISLANDS: INITIAL OBSERVATIONS Barbara H. Keating and Charles Helsley, University of Hawaii, HIGP/SOEST, 2525 Correa Rd. Honolulu, HI 96822 Zaha Waheed, Marine Resources Research Center, Maldives Islands Dale Dominey-Howes, Risk Frontiers, Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW 2109 Australia ABSTRACT Post-tsunami field surveys of the Maldives Islands where carried out to document the effects of the tsunami inundation. The study area was situated in the islands of South Male Atoll that were some of the most heavily damaged islands of the Maldive Islands. The tsunami damaged the natural environment, vegetation, man-made structures, and residents. The maximum tsunami wave height was 3-4 m. This level of inundation exceeded the height of most residents. The wave height was greatest on the eastern rim of the South Male Atoll (closest to the tsunami source) and these islands were completely flooded. The islands within the interior of the atoll saw the lowest wave heights, and these were only marginally flooded. Surveys of flood lines left on the exterior and interior of structures were measured but proved to be substantially less than that reported by survivors. It appears that the highest inundation was not preserved as flood lines. We suggest that the turbulence associated with the tsunami inundation erased the highest lines or that they did not form due to an absence of debris and organic compounds that acted as adhesion during the initial flooding. Significant erosion was documented. Deposition took place in the form of sand sheets while only desultory deposition of coral clasts in marginal areas was found.
