Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

Despite the work of Leech (1937), unpublished studies by R. B. Madge indicate that N. defodiens is a distinct species. Pleistocene.—Unknown from California. Holocene.—This species occurs along the Pacific Coast of North America from Alaska into central California. Leech (1934) discussed its natural history, but misiden- tified the beetles as N. conversator (Walker 1866). True N. investigator has not been recorded in California. Pierce's N. investigator alpha is N. nigrita, which was not considered a valid species by Hatch (1927a), upon which Pierce based his work. Nicrophorus investigator alpha was described from 6 syntype pronota (LACMIP 3048-3052, 5263; C121a-f) all from Pit A, Rancho La Brea. Pierce labeled syntype LACMIP 3048 (C121d) as holotype, although it was published (Pierce 1949) as a syntype. V prostoru primárního bezlesí arkto- alpinní tundry byl studován vliv sjezdových tratí a invazivní d eviny borovice kle e ( Pinus mugo ) na spole enstva brouk . Na území sekundárních bezlesí podhorských luk a pastvin byl hodnocen vliv zem dlského hospoda ení na brouky a další bezobratlé. Studium vlivu lyža ského areálu prokázalo, že p estože jsou sjezdové trat v alpínské zón zájmového území provozovány zp sobem šetrným k vegetaci, tak pr kazn m ní pvodní spole enstva epigeických brouk . -

This study on Silphidae fauna was carried out at different sites forming part of an agricultural landscape. Catches were carried out in two selected habitats (Borek Stary and Widna Góra) in the Subcarpathian region (south-eastern Poland) during three growing seasons (2009-2010 and 2014) using Barber pitfall traps. It included potato, fodder beet and cereal crops (Widna Góra) as well as field margins (Borek Stary and Widna Góra). Four traps were placed at each of the sites studied then were emptied on average every two weeks. As a result of the observations, a total of 5491 beetles from 13 species were collected. Keywords: Silphidae, Thanatophilus sinuatus, Nicrophorus vespillo, crop culture, field margins Introduction Most representatives of carrion beetles (Col., Silphidae) are necrophagous and/or predatory. Herbivorous species are a minority (Anderson and Peck, 1985; Sikes, 2008). Alongside ground beetles (Col., Carabidae) and rove beetles (Col., Staphylinidae), beetles from this family are an important component of epigeic entomofauna of agricultural landscape from the ecological point of view (Tischler, 1955). Necrophagous carrion beetles perform important ecological functions, which can be particularly seen in the agricultural aspect. Biochemical transformations that accompany the decomposition of dead animals lead to an increased amount of mineral nutrients and humus in the soil and, as a further consequence, they affect soil fertility regeneration. -

The presence of toxins such as drugs and pesticides on carrion can affect the behaviour and life cycle of such invertebrates. The aim of this thesis was to examine the effects of nicotine upon the colonisation of carrion by invertebrates; nicotine was used because of its historical use as an insecticide and its ubiquitous use in society. The investigations aimed to examine these possible effects both in situ in field-based testing and ex situ in a controlled laboratory environment and to work towards an empirically testable correction factor for the estimation of Postmortem interval estimates in the presence of nicotine . -

Los Nicrophorus son insectos necrófagos altamente especializados, acelerada y creciente pérdida y fragmentación del hábitat que se ha bien conocidos por su complejo comportamiento nidificador (v.g., producido en los últimos 25 años (especialmente en la zona litoral Milne & Milne, 1976; Trumbo, 1992, 1994; Scott, 1998). Colorado Insect of Interest Burying Beetles Scientific Name: Nicrophorus spp. Order: Coleoptera (Beetles) Family: Silphidae (Carrion Beetles) Identification and Descriptive Features: The burying beetles are moderate-large sized (25-35 mm), brightly colored beetles marked with Figure 1. A burying beetle, Nicrophorus orange-red and black. Their antennae are investigaror, feeding on a piece of meat. Photograph pronouncedly club-like. courtesy of Joseph Berger/IPM Images Distribution in Colorado: Ten species of burying beetles are known from Colorado (Table 1) and one or more representatives can be found throughout the state. Life History and Habits: Burying beetles have unusual life histories that involve extraordinary involvement of adults of both sexes in larval rearing. Although variations may occur among the different Nicrophorus species, the general outline follows. Rearing of larvae begins upon location of a recently dead rodent, bird or other small carrion item. When a member of the opposite sex arrives the pair will then inter the carcass, a process that can usually be completed in a few hours. Once the food item has been successfully covered it is further prepared by stripping all skin, fur and/or feathers and gathering the flesh into a pear-shaped ball. The flesh is chewed and covered with salivary and anal secretions that help to preserve it from decay. A rearing chamber is then dug out where eggs are laid. -
