Driven Pheasant shooting days normally consist of 8 to 10 guns standing in a shooting line while birds are driven by teams of beaters and dogs to fly over the waiting guns. There is some debate over the success of various possible introductions dating back to the Romans, but it is generally agreed that Pheasants were common by the 15th century. The Pheasant, although often to be thought of as a woodland bird really prefers agricultural land and woodland edges. In areas where woodlands are not common, shrubby wetlands provide suitable habitat. Despite its introduced status, the conservation of the Pheasant is important because of its long history of naturalisation and importance as a symbol of our traditional countryside. Driven, rough, decoying and stalking are all part of the British countryside’s favourites. Shooting driven Partridges and Pheasants remain in great demand and have guns travelling from all over the world in search of the very best in driven game shooting, of which we can boastfully say we offer in plentiful amounts and of the highest quality. Seasons for Pheasant run from 1st October-1st February, the Partridgeseason runs from 1st Sepember - 1st February and days can be tailored to suit your needs. They can range from the more modest, smaller days to the largest of days for those that want the non-stop shooting, extremely generous bag numbers and that ever familiar adrenaline rush to accompany the excitement of bird filled skies.

The Pheasant’s origins actually lie a long way off in eastern Europe and Asia. There are approximately 49 species to be found globally and our own common Pheasant has many subspecies and some strains developed specially for the shooting field. Gamekeepers today can choose from a perplexing variety that includes the Michigan Blueback, Bazanty, Scandinavian, Japanese Green and Manchurian, among many others.

Pheasant shooting is seen to be an impenetrable world by some but in fact it couldn’t be further from the truth. With ever more syndicates opening up smaller, affordable and more inviting days for those who have not shot a game bird before or whom just like a low key affair. Catering for a wide range of shooters, the one of the great things about shooting is that on any given day in the field you’ll be with people from all walks of life, professions, ages and backgrounds and its wonderful how many distinguishing characters you’ll meet.

Etiquette and tradition go hand in hand in the field and with shooting being a country sport with a rich history, etiquette remains a strong focal point. It’s something that has evolved steadily over a number of years and is best described as good manners, respect for fellow guns and most important of all safe shooting. If you are new to driven game shooting or are unsure of what is expected of you in the field there are a few general rules to abide by including punctuality and dress code, but more importantly code of conduct in the field and safety when shooting. It is important to understand these before you arrive. Judgement and conscientiousness is key when standing on your peg, be aware of where you’re shooting your birds as nobody likes a greedy gun who poaches from their neighbour nor someone who doesn’t know when to leave a bird.

They can range from the more modest, smaller days on the picturesque estates tucked away in the corners of the country to the largest of days with incredible bag numbers, royal like hospitality and outstanding reputations. Partridge shooting on the right estates and over the right ground provides some of the most amazing and exhilarating sport. We do not operate like a sporting agent offering just the shooting. We arrange the complete package, which just leaves you with a decision of how to get to the airport. The red-legged Partridge (Red leg) is not native to Britain, but stock from France was successfully introduced to East Anglia in about 1770. Although becoming well established by the end of the century, its spread across Great Britain was slow and its current distribution was not reached until the 1930s. Shooting Partridges over stubble in autumn is something of a very British tradition and it used to make up the majority of driven shooting in England. It was of course, our very own beautiful English Partridge or Grey Partridge, not the Red-Legged variety you see rather regularly these days. Sadly, modern agriculture back in the 1980’s had a detrimental effect on the stronghold of the little Grey Partridge but thankfully due to kind, committed landowners and farmers doing their utmost to once again see this incredible bird prosper. PARTRIDGE SHOOTING IN THE UK

The UK has an array of different species to shoot and it all depends on what your preference is. Variety falls into different categories such as Driven, rough, decoying, wildfowling and stalking which all fall under Britain’s favourites. Shooting driven Partridges and Pheasants remain in great demand and have guns travelling from all over the world in search of the very best in Driven game shooting, of which we can boastfully say we offer in plentiful amounts and of the highest quality. The season for Partridge runs from 1st September to the 1st February and for Pheasants the season starts a month later from 1st October to the 1st February. and days can be tailored to suit your needs. They can range from the more modest, smaller days on the picturesque estates tucked away in the corners of the country to the largest of days with incredible bag numbers, royal like hospitality and outstanding reputations.

The Red-Legged Partridge (Red leg) is not native to Britain, but stock from France was successfully introduced to East Anglia in about 1770. Although becoming well established by the end of the century, its spread across Great Britain was slow and its current distribution was not reached until the 1930s.

Shooting Partridges over stubble in autumn is something of a very British tradition and it used to make up the majority of driven shooting in England. It was of course, our very own beautiful English Partridge or Grey Partridge, not the Red-Legged variety you see rather regularly these days. Sadly, modern agriculture back in the 1980’s had a detrimental effect on the stronghold of the little Grey Partridge but thankfully due to kind, committed landowners and farmers doing their utmost to once again see this incredible bird prosper.

History tells us that traditional Partridges used to be presented over varied thick hedgerows and corresponding belts of trees towards eagerly awaited guns on the opposite side. Nowadays, Partridges are pushed in over agricultural land and are presented through game covers and small woodlands over the guns. Partridges are a very exciting bird to shoot and although you can choose dedicated days on the partridge many Gamekeepers on small syndicated shoots put down a few Partridges on Pheasant days to add variety to a shoot day. Goose shooting has become ever more popular over the recent years and is something very special to experience if you haven’t done so already. At some of our worldwide lodges we have dedicated Pigeon shooting areas. These vast areas are fed on a regular basis to keep the birds coming in sheer numbers, shooting from purpose built hides and over decoys placed on the ground, on stands, or on rotating carousels. These birds provide great sport, either as a dedicated shooting holiday, or for those looking for mixed bags. At a lot of our lodges it is possible to shoot Ducks in the morning, Perdiz in the afternoon and then have a few hours Pigeon shooting. There are a few things to remember when you’re thinking about heading out for a Pigeon. Decoying is a skill mastered from field craftsmanship and experience in observing flight lines and Pigeon activity. It is useful to understand what equipment and information you need and how you would need to implement it. Wild Pigeons are both large and fast, which make calculating their speed and lead slightly deceptive. Pigeons are also wary birds, and there is an element of hunting involved that makes the shooting closer to decoying Ducks than shooting Doves. Staying hidden and still in a good blind, is the key to success. Hats are a great form of protection which give a sense of camouflage. A good shooting hat will not only keep your head and eyes out of the sun but will keep you covered enough so the birds won’t see your face, giving you the added edge. If you’re seen too early it will scupper your chances of getting that Pigeon into the pattern. In the UK the ideal decoy and of course the best of all is the traditional dead Pigeon. The fresher the better but a pre-shot one from the freezer will suffice. If you don’t have any of the real thing then don’t panic as any good plastic decoy will do the job. You won’t need very many and if you’re on a good flight line then sometimes you won’t need any at all. It is recommended that you start off with around 10 decoys but make sure you do your reconnaissance beforehand.
