  • The Historic Recordings of the Song Desafinado: Bossa Nova Development and Change in the International Scene1
The historic recordings of the song Desafinado: Bossa Nova development and change in the international scene1 Liliana Harb Bollos Universidade Federal de Goiás, Brasil [email protected] Fernando A. de A. Corrêa Faculdade Santa Marcelina, Brasil [email protected] Carlos Henrique Costa Universidade Federal de Goiás, Brasil [email protected] 1. Introduction Considered the “turning point” (Medaglia, 1960, p. 79) in modern popular Brazi- lian music due to the representativeness and importance it reached in the Brazi- lian music scene in the subsequent years, João Gilberto’s LP, Chega de saudade (1959, Odeon, 3073), was released in 1959 and after only a short time received critical and public acclaim. The musicologist Brasil Rocha Brito published an im- portant study on Bossa Nova in 1960 affirming that “never before had a happe- ning in the scope of our popular music scene brought about such an incitement of controversy and polemic” (Brito, 1993, p. 17). Before the Chega de Saudade recording, however, in February of 1958, João Gilberto participated on the LP Can- ção do Amor Demais (Festa, FT 1801), featuring the singer Elizete Cardoso. The recording was considered a sort of presentation recording for Bossa Nova (Bollos, 2010), featuring pieces by Vinicius de Moraes and Antônio Carlos Jobim, including arrangements by Jobim. On the recording, João Gilberto interpreted two tracks on guitar: “Chega de Saudade” (Jobim/Moraes) and “Outra vez” (Jobim). The groove that would symbolize Bossa Nova was recorded for the first time on this LP with ¹ The first version of this article was published in the Anais do V Simpósio Internacional de Musicologia (Bollos, 2015), in which two versions of “Desafinado” were discussed.

SUPPLEMENTAL MUSIC RESOURCE Copyright 2014 by JustFaith Ministries • www.justfaith.org • 502-429-0865 YOUNG ADULT/COLLEGE Introduction “I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music.” Billy Joel Music is a powerful medium used to stir our senses and awaken us to deeper reality. The poetry of words coupled with the emotion of melody often proves to be a helpful resource for people of prayer. The Psalms of David, African-American spirituals, Taize music, all can reveal God’s movement in our lives and speak to our hearts. In the following pages, you will find five suggested songs for each J-Walking session that can be used alongside the resource CD Songs for JusticeWalkers by Bryan Sirchio. These songs may be used during the appointed time for music as transitional music, for welcoming people into the session, or to play while participants journal. Different Types of Music Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob. Psalm 81:1 The following music is diverse both in style and popularity. This sampling aims to mirror attitudes and outlooks from the Christian tradition. Some of the music is contemplative and meditative like the first chapter of Genesis; some is heavy and heartbroken like the 23rd Psalm. Some seethes with prophetic anger, demanding social change like Jeremiah’s volleys against Jehoakim. A few musical offerings sing a grateful and joyful melody like Mary’s Canticle.

Two years on from our hugely successful inaugural event in Brussels it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 2009 World Copyright Summit in Washington, DC. This year’s slogan for the Summit – “New Frontiers for Creators in the Marketplace” – illustrates perfectly what we aim to achieve here: remind to the world that creators’ contributions are fundamental for cultural, economic and social development but also that creators – and those who represent them – face several daunting challenges in this new digital economy. It is imperative that we bring to the forefront of political debate the creative industries’ future and where we, creators, fit into this new landscape. For this reason we have gathered, under the CISAC umbrella, all the stakeholders involved one way or another in the creation, production and dissemination of creative works.

  • Tom Jobim and the Music of the Murdered House Tom Jobim E a Música Da Casa Assassinada
Tom Jobim and the music of the Murdered House Tom Jobim e a música da Casa Assassinada Ney Costa Santos In 1959 Lucio Cardoso's Chronicle of the Murdered House was published, dividing critics and readers between acceptance and outrage. The detractors were disturbed by the atmosphere of guilt, sin and incest and the admirers were overwhelmed by the passionate and intense writing. Sixty years after its release, there is no doubt that the Chronicle is one of the greatest novels in Brazilian literature and it is impossible to remain indifferent to it. Lucio Cardoso has always been controversial. When he launched Maleita in 1934 and Salgueiro in 1935, the two books were still in line with the regional and social themes that dominated Brazilian literature. The next book, Luz no Subsolo, represented a rupture from realistic novels and a plunge by the writer into the themes of interiority, questions about life and death and the relationship between man and Mystery. This book bewildered the criticism to the point that Mario de Andrade, in a letter sent to the author, although claiming that he did not like the book, admitted that there was something in it that disturbed him and to which he attributed value. (...) What a strange and haunted novel you wrote! (...) It punched me in the stomach, I ran out of breath, I read it, reading, the situation gripped me, the characters didn't interest me, sometimes the analyzes fatigued me a lot, sometimes they illuminated me, I didn't know in what world I was, completely out of my element.

  • Robert Juliat Dalis Adds a Golden Glow to the Latin Grammy Awards 2020 | 1
Robert Juliat Dalis adds a golden glow to the Latin Grammy Awards 2020 | 1 Robert Juliat award-winning Dalis 860 adds golden glow to Latin Grammy Awards 2020 Hosted by Ana Brenda Contreras, Victor Manuelle and Yalitza Aparicio, the 21st Latin Grammy Awards were celebrated in late November to honour the cream of the Latin music scene. This year saw a rather different format from the usual star-studded occasion due to the dictates of the COVID-19 pandemic: to ensure the safety of the artists and the production team, the nominees were showcased to the world in a remote, live broadcast by Univision from the American Airlines Arena in Miami, with breakout performances streamed from other cities throughout Latin America. Despite the lack of a live audience, this year’s performances were no less glamorous, and the stellar line up – which included the likes of Bad Bunny, Camilo, Kany García, J Balvin, Jesse & Joy, Natalia Lafourcade, Ricky Martin, Fito Páez and Carlos Vives all competing for Album Of The Year – were presented in their best light, bringing some much-needed joy and warmth to its worldwide viewing audience. The Awards show’s lighting designer and director, Tom Kenny, operating from the Miami base, chose to enhance the appearance of the artists with the elegance and subtleties of a number of Robert Juliat Dalis 860 LED fixtures. Nine of the 8-colour LED battens were arranged at ground level in a horseshoe configuration bordering the front of the performing area, from where they were used as footlights and for low level front lighting.
