(ARIJ Field workers 11 May 2015) Israeli Occupation bulldozers escorted by the Israeli Occupation Army (IOA) demolished a barracks in Beit Ra’mar area in Al Fureidis village, southeast of Bethlehem city and confiscated stones. The targeted barracks is owned by Hisham Ibrahim Abu Mahamid. During the operation, the IOA arrested Ahmed Abu Mahamid (20 years). (ARN 15 June 2015) Israeli Occupation Army (IOA) razed 20 dunums of Palestinian land in Khirbet Hamuda, west of Husan village, west of Bethlehem city and uprooted 200 olive seedlings. The targeted land is owned by Ibrahim Lafi Shousha and Adel Sa’di Shosha. The IOA claimed that the targeted land classified as “State land”. (RB2000 15 June 2015) Israeli Occupation Authorities stormed Al Bireh area in Al Khader village, southwest of Bethlehem city and survey the 3 dunums of land owned by the sons of Musa Mohammad Hussin Salah. (Wafa 17 June 2015) Israeli Occupation Authorities handed out a military order to demolish a Palestinian house in Al Masara village, south of Bethlehem city. (ARIJ Field workers 21 June 2015) Israeli Occupation Authorities handed out a military order to demolish an agricultural room and retaining wall built on 10 dunums of agricultural land in Kisan village, southeast of Bethlehem city. The targeted room is owned by Musa Abu Daya. (Wafa 24 June 2015) Israeli Occupation Army (IOA) stormed and searched dozens of Palestinian houses in Ash-Shawawra village in Bethlehem governorate. The IOA also, closed all the entrances of the village and prevented Palestinians from entering or leaving it. (RB2000 29 June 2015) Israeli Occupation Army (IOA) handed out a military order to demolish an animal shed in Um Rukba neighborhood in Al Khader village, southwest of Bethlehem city. (Maannews 2 July 2015) Israeli Occupation Army (IOA) tightened its procedures at Gilo 300 military checkpoint, north of Bethlehem city. (RB2000 3 July 2015) The Israeli Supreme Court Gives the Green Light to Begin Building the Separation Wall in the Cremisan Valley. The Israeli Supreme Court issued a decision on Monday, the 6th of July 2015, giving the Israeli Ministry of Defence the green light to begin building the separation wall in the Cremisan Valley in Beit Jala. This ruling limits the effect of the Court’s previous decision given in April 2015 to stop building the separation wall in Cremisan. In its new decision, the court limited the ban on building the wall to the lands surroundings of the Salesian Sister’s Convents, represented by the Society of St. Yves, and the Salesian Monk’s Monastery, represented by Adv. Nihad Irsheid as well as the monasteries’ agricultural lands. The court ruled that the Israeli authorities can initiate building the wall on the privately owned lands by people from Beit Jala; thereby leaving-out only a small section, hundreds of meters in width and adjacent to the Salesian monasteries and their lands. The Court’s decision comes after the Israeli Ministry of Defence sent correspondence to the petitioners in late April. In it, they expressed their intention to initiate the building of the separation wall along the eastern section of the planned route, which in effect would mean that the wall will be built on the lands which are privately owned 5 Applied Research Institute - Jerusalem (ARIJ) & Land Research Center – Jerusalem (LRC) [email protected] | http://www.arij.org [email protected] | http://www.lrcj.org by people from Beit Jala. The Ministry of Defence claimed that the Court's initial decision from last April did not annul the planned route; it has only requested maintaining the geographical connection between the Salesian Convent and Monastery as well as the connection between the Monasteries and the local community. In other words, the Ministry of Defence has interpreted the decision in a narrow manner, limiting the cessation of the building of the wall to the area around the Monasteries and their lands. Following that correspondence, Adv. Ghiath Nasser who represents the Municipality of Beit Jala and the land owners, submitted an application to the Supreme Court alleging the contempt of the Court’s decision while requesting the court to issue an injunction preventing the building of the wall.

Date: Sign: 2 Abstract This thesis examines the geopolitical orientations of Messianic Jews in Jerusalem, Israel-Palestine, in order to shed light on the confluence and co-constitution of religion and geopolitics. Messianic Jews are individuals who self-identify as being ethnically Jewish, but who hold beliefs that are largely indistinguishable from Christianity. Using the prism of ‘everyday geopolitics’, I explore my informants’ encounters with, and experiences of, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the dominant geopolitical logics that underpin it. I analyse the myriad of everyday factors that were formative in the shaping of my informants’ geopolitical orientation towards the conflict, focusing chiefly on those that were mediated and embodied through religious practice and belief. The material for the research was gathered in Jerusalem over the course of sixteen months – between September 2012 and January 2014 – largely through ethnographic research methods. Accordingly, I offer a lived alternative to existing work on geopolitics and religion; work that is dominated by overly cerebral and cognitivist views of religion. By contrast, I show how the urgencies of everyday life, as well as a number of religious practices, attune Messianic Jewish geopolitical orientations in dynamic, contingent, and contradictory ways.

    Absentees against Their Will – Property Expropriation in East Jerusalem under the Absentee Property Law July 2010 Introduction The Absentee Property Law of 1950 was meant to serve as the legal basis to transfer the property of Palestinian refugees into the possession of the State of Israel. The law says that the land and property of Palestinian residents and nationals of Arab countries who, from November 29, 1947 until a declaration that the state of emergency declared in 1948 ended [which has not yet happened] were in one of the Arab countries, or "in any part of the Land of Israel that is outside of the area of Israel," would revert to the possession of the Custodian of Absentee Property, meaning, to the possession of the State.1 Following the annexation of East Jerusalem in 1967, and as a result the application of all of the laws of Israel -- including the Absentee Property Law -- to the annexed area, a problematic situation arose in which the property of almost all the Palestinian residents of the city became, in fact, absentee property, because those residents were at the time to which the law refers citizens of Jordan, then an enemy country, who resided in "a part of the Land of Israel that [was] outside of the area of Israel." To contend with this problematic situation, section 3 of the Law and Administration Ordinance 5730-1970 provides that the law does not apply to residents of East Jerusalem who "on the day of the incidence of the order of application of the law was in the area of its application and was a resident thereof."2 Therefore, only residents who were physically present in East Jerusalem on the day of annexation are not considered absentees.

    Jerusalem Office POBox: 25047 Jerusalem Tel.: +972‐2‐532 83 98 Tel: 02‐2976555 Fax: +972‐2‐581 96 65 Fax: 02‐2976557 Email: [email protected] Email: [email protected] Web: www.fespal.org Website: www.jmcc.org Poll no. 73_April 2011 A public opinion poll conducted by Jerusalem Media & Communications Center * Increase in ratio of Palestinians who oppose military and bombing operations and firing of rockets * A majority of Palestinians support holding local council elections and believe that early elections are a solution to end the internal split * Popularity of political parties and figures remains stable * Around 41% of the Palestinians believe that the local council elections will not be held on the set date (July 9, 2011) The public opinion poll conducted by Jerusalem Media & Communication Center (JMCC) showed an increase in the ratio of Palestinians who oppose military operations as an appropriate response under the current political conditions from 38.1% in January 2009 to 51.8% this April. Accordingly, the ratio of Palestinians who support military operations decreased from 53.3% in January 2009 to 37.1% in April 2011. With regards to the rockets fired from Gaza Strip towards Israel, the ratio of Palestinians who believe they are useful in achieving the national goals went down from 50.8% in January 2009 to 25.4% this month while the ratio of Palestinians who believe that these rockets harm the national interests went up from 20.8% in January 2009 to 38.6% this month. In a similar trend, the ratio of Palestinians who support bombing operations against Israeli civilian targets decreased from 55.4% in January 2009 to 37.3% this April.
