Born in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea on March 16, 1991, Lee Jin-ah is a jazz-influenced R&B and pop singer/songwriter. She is best known as the second runner up on Season 4 of SBS’ K-Pop Star (2013-2014). She signed with the Antenna label and released her first single, “A Letter”, in 2013. In October of the same year, she issued her debut album, Unvisible, which reached Number 13 in the Gaon Album Chart. She released a series of hit singles in 2014 and 2015 including “Time Slow Down”, “My Own Way” , and “Yum Yum Yum”, all of which hit the Top 10. She was also a featured artist on the official K-pop Star 4 soundtrack. Jin-ah released the Random EP in 2017, which featured the single of the same name. Her second full length album, Jinah Restaurant Full Course, was released in 2018. The album featured the hit single “We Are”, a song that featured guest vocals from her Antenna Records labelmates Sam Kim, Kwon Jin-Ah, Jung Seung-Hwan, and Chai. 'Dreamy Alarm': Lee JinAh is wooed by Astro's Cha Eunwoo in new single, fans say his stare makes them 'weak' South Korean singer-songwriter Lee JinAh returns with her latest mini-album 'Candy Pianist', led by the single 'Dreamy Alarm'. The release follows JinAh's contribution 'Love With You' to the soundtrack of the television series 'Sweet Munchies' starring Jung Il-woo, Kang Ji-young and Lee Hak-joo. Lee Jin-ah, currently signed to the label Antenna, made her debut in 2013 with her first full-length album 'Unvisible'. She is most known, however, for her appearance on season four of the SBS show 'K-pop Star' on which JinAh finished as the second runner-up of SBS's K-pop Star Season 4, losing out to first runner-up Jung Seung-hwan and winner Katie Kim. JinAh released her first EP 'Random' in 2017, followed by her second album, 'Jinah Restaurant Full Course' in 2018, with several singles and soundtrack appearances punctuating the releases. In 2019, she married pianist Shin Seong-jin. And given her latest release is titled 'Candy Pianist', there is perhaps a bit of a teaser in the name as to what to expect from the album's tracks. The music video for the track features boy band Astro's Cha Eun-woo as JinAh's love interest, and naturally, seeing the idol play what appears to be the ideal boyfriend has his fans swooning. One fan said, "Eunwoo is a dream," another stated, "Sweetest boy with his sweetest smile. He’s so endearing :(," one tweeted, "I feel so weak when Cha Eunwoo stares like that," and one fan shared, "Astro deserves the whole world." This research focused on how three agencies – the government, public broadcasting, and the culture industry – have negotiated their relationships in the process of globalization, and how the power dynamics of these three production sectors have been influenced by Korean society’s politics, economy, geography, and culture. The importance of the national media system was identified in the (re)production of the Korean Wave phenomenon by examining how public broadcasting-centered media ecology has control over the development of the popular music culture within Korean society. The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)’s weekly show, Music Bank, was the subject of analysis regarding changes in the culture of media production in the phase of globalization. In-depth interviews with media professionals and consumers who became involved in the show production were conducted in order to grasp the patterns that Korean television has generated in the global expansion of local cultural practices.

    K-Pop Orientalism: US Cultural Imperialism in Korean Popular Music from 1954 to 2018 By Alexandra San Diego A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of East Asian Studies University of Alberta Ⓒ Alexandra San Diego, 2021 Abstract This project examines how Orientalism has impacted the U.S. and South Korea relationship in a sociocultural context, the history of Korean and Asian people in the U.S., and how these relationships affect the creation, production, and American reception of K-pop. It posits that Orientalist representations within American media produce and perpetuate problematic myths about K-Pop which impact Korean media production and do not alleviate ethnic stereotyping of Asian people and orientalist sentiments against them in the West. Orientalist discourse is found to have persisted into the modern and contemporary age thus impacting the cultural production of Korea and in particular, Korean popular music. I aim to elucidate that by including Asian-American discourse, a discourse that ruptures the binary of East-West or Orient-Occident frameworks, we can have a more transversal understanding of the creation, production, and American reception of Korean pop culture that ruptures the Orientalist logic of “difference”.
