Yi (LGE Senior Executive Vice President) National Mathematics and Science Competition (NMSC) KSEA has held a long tradition of sponsoring the National Mathematics Competition (NMC) for students in the 4th to 11th grades. It became NMSC when the Science Competition was added in 2007. It has been recognized as an important community service organized by the KSEA members at the national level. The primary objective of this competition is to aspire young students to become more interested in science and technology and to recognize Korean-American students for their excellence in Math and Science. To promote the significance of this event, we have started to send award notifications to the awardees’ schools. Positive feedback received from many students, parents and participating Chapters on the Science Competition in particular, due to its emphasis on “teamwork” vs. individual competition. NMSC2008 was held in 33 cities in the US and Canada! KSEA is committed to expanding our efforts to grow the NMSC. For more information, visit http://nmc.ksea.org/NMSC2008/. Scholarships The KSEA and KSEA-KUSCO scholarship programs are established to recognize students for their excellence, not based on needs. The goal is to provide meaningful opportunities for the YGs to present their work and network with prominent scientists and engineers attending UKC. Our vision is to grow endowment funds to afford more scholarships and to expand categories to emphasize the importance of leadership and community service. Competition was particularly stiff this year with a record number of outstanding applicants (63 undergraduate and 92 graduate students) for a total of 15 undergraduate and 17 graduate scholarships! In addition, there were 2 essay awards. For the first time, all of the Graduate Scholarship recipients will present at either regular or Young Generation & Professional Forum Poster Sessions at UKC 2008. 5 Table of Contents Messages from UKC2008 Chairs……………………………………………………………………….................... 7 Message from Vice Minister of Education, Scienve and Technology of Republic of Korea…………………….. 9 Basic Conference Schedule..…………………………………………………………………………….................... 10 Program at a Glance and Complementary Meetings & Special Meetings…………………….………………...... 11 Plenary Program…………………………………………………………………………………………………………. 16 World Class University Project……….………………………………………………………………………………… 18 Music Program………..………………………………………………………………………………………………….. 19 Symposiums APM: Applied and Pure Mathematics………………………………………………………… 20 AST: Aerospace Science & Technology ……………………………………………............ 22 AUT: Automotive Science & Technology………………...( sponsored by Hyundai Motor) 23 BST: Bio Science and Technology…………………………….…………………………….. 25 CEE: Civil & Environmental Engineering…………………...…….(sponsored by POSCO) 28 CNT: Communication and Networking Technology……..…(sponsored by SK Telecom) 31 EPS: Electronic Packaging Science and Technology……………….……………………… 33 FEN: Fossil Energy in Next Decades……………………………………….……………….. 35 FST: Food Science & Technology……………………………………….…………….…….. 36 IST: Information Science & Technology…………..…….(sponsored by LG Electronics) 39 MRM: Mechanical Engineering, Roboitcs & Manufacturing Technology.……….………… 41 NST: Nano Science & Technology……………………………………….………………….. 43 PCP: Polymer Chemistry and Physics…..…………………………………….…………….. 45 PET: Polymer Engineering & Technology…………………………………….…………….. 47 RES: Renewable Energy & Sustainability…..….(sponsored by KETEP and SK Energy) 49 STA: Statistics, Biostatistics & Bioinformatics…………………………….……………….. 51 POS: Plenary Poster Session………………………..………………………..……………… 52 Workshops ENGY I: Energy R & D Workshop I……………….………………..….(sponsored by KETEP) 57 ENGY II Energy R & D Workshop II…………………………………...(sponsored by KETEP) 57 Forums ERD: Education and R & D Policy Forum…………………..……………………………….. 58 WiSE: Women in Science and Engineering………………………………………………….

  • The Korean Wave As a Localizing Process: Nation As a Global Actor in Cultural Production
THE KOREAN WAVE AS A LOCALIZING PROCESS: NATION AS A GLOBAL ACTOR IN CULTURAL PRODUCTION A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Ju Oak Kim May 2016 Examining Committee Members: Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Advisory Chair, Department of Journalism Nancy Morris, Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production Patrick Murphy, Associate Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production Dal Yong Jin, Associate Professor, School of Communication, Simon Fraser University © Copyright 2016 by Ju Oak Kim All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation research examines the Korean Wave phenomenon as a social practice of globalization, in which state actors have promoted the transnational expansion of Korean popular culture through creating trans-local hybridization in popular content and intra-regional connections in the production system. This research focused on how three agencies – the government, public broadcasting, and the culture industry – have negotiated their relationships in the process of globalization, and how the power dynamics of these three production sectors have been influenced by Korean society’s politics, economy, geography, and culture. The importance of the national media system was identified in the (re)production of the Korean Wave phenomenon by examining how public broadcasting-centered media ecology has control over the development of the popular music culture within Korean society. The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)’s weekly show, Music Bank, was the subject of analysis regarding changes in the culture of media production in the phase of globalization. In-depth interviews with media professionals and consumers who became involved in the show production were conducted in order to grasp the patterns that Korean television has generated in the global expansion of local cultural practices.

  • “The Social Cut of Black and Yellow Female Hip Hop” Erick Raven
“The Social Cut of Black and Yellow Female Hip Hop” Erick Raven University of Texas at Arlington May 2020 Abstract Korean female hip hop artists are expanding the definition of femininity in South Korea through hip hop. In doing so, they are following a tradition first established by Black female musical performers in a new context. Korean artists are conceiving and expressing, through rap and dance, alternative versions of a “Korean woman,” thus challenging and attempting to add to the dominant conceptions of “woman.” This Thesis seeks to point out the ways female Korean hip hop artists are engaging dominant discourse regarding skin tone, body type, and expression of female sexuality, and creating spaces for the development of new discourses about gender in South Korean society. Contents Introduction – Into the Cut ................................................ 1 Chapter I – Yoon Mi-rae and Negotiating the West and East of Colorism ............................................................. 12 Chapter II – The Performing Black and Yellow Female Body ................................................................................ 31 Chapter III – Performing Sexuality ................................. 47 Chapter IV – Dis-Orientation .......................................... 59 Conclusion .................................................................... 67 Works Cited .................................................................... 70 Introduction – Into the Cut Identities are performed discourse; they are formed when those who identify as a particular personality perform and establish a discourse in a particular social context. As George Lipsitz states, “improvisation is a site of encounter” (61). In South Korea, female Korean hip hop is the site of a social cut in dominant culture and has become a space of improvisation where new, counter-hegemonic identities are constructed and performed. In this Thesis, I argue that Korean female hip hop artists are enacting a social rupture by performing improvised identities.

  • Mapping the Presence of the Korean Wave in North Korea
Research Note IQAS Vol. 48 / 2017 3–4, pp. 273–284 Mapping the Presence of the Korean Wave in North Korea Research Note Bianca Milanowitsch Abstract This research note scrutinises the degree to which the Korean Wave – South Korean cultural exports, for example of pop music and television shows – has impacted North Korea. Hallyu, as the Korean Wave is also called, has reached the North through illegal trade, despite restric- tions put in place by the regime, and has triggered a growing demand for South Korean produc- tions. The South Korean government creates a presence in its northern neighbour by using Hallyu as a soft power tool that has become part of its foreign policy arsenal. The North has reacted to the influence of the Korean Wave with crackdowns and arrests, for example of gov- ernment officials. Yet Hallyu may also serve the North Korean government’s aim of prolonging its authoritarian rule, by using the South Korean cultural presence as a justification for feeling threatened by foreign intervention. Keywords: North Korea, South Korea, soft power, Korean Wave, Hallyu, K-drama, K-pop 1. Introduction The Winter Olympics held last February in Pyeongchang, in which a total of 92 countries participated, propelled South Korea into the focus of internation- al media and sport fans alike. Although South Korea was the host country, North Korean participation in the event attracted as much attention as on previous occasions, for example when “[t]he two Koreas marched together under one flag at both the 2000 and 2004 Summer Games, as well as the 2006 Winter Games” (Calamur 2018).
