January-2015 3 Super Student Monthly Super Student : Sophie Chatas Runner, musician, math whiz Long before last fall’s cross country season, Sophie Chatas met with her coach to figure out how to get from here to there. The doe-eyed, slender brunette wanted to transform herself from a strong runner to a great one. Chatas was hungry for one last trip to the state meet, after finishing back in the pack—107th—the previous year. “Her drive was most impressive,” says Lori Baldwin, head cross country coach at Columbus School for Girls. Chatas began training daily, even though she was still in the middle of a successful track season, one that would see an 11th-place finish at the state competition in the 1,600-meter run. She trained through the summer. Even changed her form: “We worked on her foot strike, got her arms relaxed,” recalls Baldwin. Forgoing soccer, Chatas trained aggressively deep into cross country season, sacrificing strong showings in her early races. “Sophie was committed,” says Baldwin. January-2015 4 Super Student Monthly She went out fast that November morning at the 2011 state championship. “But with 200 meters left, I was in 30th place,” Chatas recalls. “I dug down. I began passing people—what a feeling!” She wound up 13th: a school record, a personal best and an All-Ohio designation (given to state meet qualifiers with a 3.5 GPA or better). Determination like this is hard-wired into Chatas. The 18-year-old daughter of Geoff and Katie Chatas—he’s OSU’s chief financial officer, she’s an ardent community volunteer—is not just a gifted athlete. An honor student and National Merit Finalist, Chatas has garnered awards for exceptional scores on the National Latin Exam and, as CSG’s top math student her junior year, received the Honda-OSU Math Medal. She’s interned with OSU’s Reading Recovery Program, helping youngsters read. A staff member of the school newspaper and student council president, she’s a visible leader with what she admits is infectious school spirit. She’s musical, too. A French horn player, Chatas has been a member of the Youth Philharmonic of Central Ohio for four years. In her final performance with them, she’s happy to see Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite on the program, which, she says, “has a great horn part.” Digging in when things get tough, however, doesn’t apply just to her running. “Math may’ve been easy in the beginning,” Chatas confesses, “but I really have to work in BC Calculus this year. It’s an AP class, and it’s a challenge.” Her AP success rate, however, is high. An AP Scholar with Distinction, she earned a 5 (the top score) on each of the five AP tests she’s taken in a range of subjects, from biology to comparative government. After a trip to London with her family this summer for the Olympics—they’ve got tickets for beach volleyball, diving and track events—and Greece to connect with distant relatives, Chatas will attend Williams College in Massachusetts. The Division III school has recruited her for track and cross country. Chatas hasn’t committed to either yet. Or a major. But witnessing Olympic track stars in competition—that might spark a whole new round of Chatas determination. January-2015 5 Super Student Monthly Brave Manjunath remembered on IIM-L campus Lucknow: A candlelight march was organised at Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM-L) campus on Wednesday in memory of Manjunath Shanmugam, who was killed fighting against corruption on November 19, 2005. A bright alumnus of IIM-L, Manjunath was a manager with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) posted in Lakhimpur, where he was shot dead by a petrol pump owner and his henchmen for objecting to adulteration of oil. IIM students addressed the gathering giving information about the trust and its activities. A minute’s silence was observed in Manjunath’s memory. Students then administered the pledge of integrity to the students and rendered the national anthem. The Manjunath Shanmugam Trust (MST) — an initiative of business school alumni across the world who has joined hands to improve governance in Indian public life — fought the case relentlessly. After a record nine-month trial, all eight accused were found guilty, with the main accused given the death sentence and the remaining life imprisonment. India’s first national RTI Act helpline was set up by MST in association with a noted NGO on November 19, 2006 to mark the first death anniversary of Manjunath. January-2015 6 Super Student Monthly IIM Raipur gets a reactor tender Lucknow: Rolling up their sleeves, management students battled against each other to come up with an idea to build an atomic reactor without taking loans and generate quick profits from it. After much deliberation, the government finally handed over the tender to a team from IIM Raipur. This was, however, not a real tender process but one of the business events titled L&T-Finesse at IIM-Lucknow’s annual business and cultural fest Manfest-Varchasva. Giving it their best shot, B-schools from across the country competed for the reactor tender. Battling the brightest of the country, six teams presented their financial and technical bid to put down their competitors. With less investment and minimum hard work, the budding managers made use of the latest technology that required minimum foreign intervention to come up with the best idea. Lobbying their idea strongly, the teams fought tooth and nail for the winner’s slot. For managing its financials well and working in tandem with the external environment, the team from IIM Raipur was adjudged the winner. In the management event, ‘The Next CEO’, students were given a task to get themselves appointed in a company. Already under pressure, teams were asked to develop a strategy to work better. While the employer wanted to appoint people on low salary package, the job-seekers did not agree to the packages. The event was endowed with foresight, functional expertise, confidence and the rare ability to make decisions under severe pressure.
