January-2015 3 Super Student Monthly Super Student : Sophie Chatas

Runner, musician, math whiz Long before last fall’s cross country season, Sophie Chatas met with her coach to figure out how to get from here to there. The doe-eyed, slender brunette wanted to transform herself from a strong runner to a great one. Chatas was hungry for one last trip to the state meet, after finishing back in the pack—107th—the previous year.

“Her drive was most impressive,” says Lori Baldwin, head cross country coach at Columbus School for Girls. Chatas began training daily, even though she was still in the middle of a successful track season, one that would see an 11th-place finish at the state competition in the 1,600-meter run. She trained through the summer. Even changed her form: “We worked on her foot strike, got her arms relaxed,” recalls Baldwin. Forgoing soccer, Chatas trained aggressively deep into cross country season, sacrificing strong showings in her early races.

“Sophie was committed,” says Baldwin.

January-2015 4 Super Student Monthly She went out fast that November morning at the 2011 state championship. “But with 200 meters left, I was in 30th place,” Chatas recalls. “I dug down. I began passing people—what a feeling!” She wound up 13th: a school record, a personal best and an All-Ohio designation (given to state meet qualifiers with a 3.5 GPA or better).

Determination like this is hard-wired into Chatas. The 18-year-old daughter of Geoff and Katie Chatas—he’s OSU’s chief financial officer, she’s an ardent community volunteer—is not just a gifted athlete. An honor student and National Merit Finalist, Chatas has garnered awards for exceptional scores on the National Latin Exam and, as CSG’s top math student her junior year, received the Honda-OSU Math Medal. She’s interned with OSU’s Reading Recovery Program, helping youngsters read. A staff member of the school newspaper and student council president, she’s a visible leader with what she admits is infectious school spirit.

She’s musical, too. A French horn player, Chatas has been a member of the Youth Philharmonic of Central Ohio for four years. In her final performance with them, she’s happy to see Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite on the program, which, she says, “has a great horn part.”

Digging in when things get tough, however, doesn’t apply just to her running. “Math may’ve been easy in the beginning,” Chatas confesses, “but I really have to work in BC Calculus this year. It’s an AP class, and it’s a challenge.” Her AP success rate, however, is high. An AP Scholar with Distinction, she earned a 5 (the top score) on each of the five AP tests she’s taken in a range of subjects, from biology to comparative government.

After a trip to London with her family this summer for the Olympics—they’ve got tickets for beach volleyball, diving and track events—and Greece to connect with distant relatives, Chatas will attend Williams College in Massachusetts. The Division III school has recruited her for track and cross country. Chatas hasn’t committed to either yet. Or a major.

But witnessing Olympic track stars in competition—that might spark a whole new round of Chatas determination.

January-2015 5 Super Student Monthly Brave Manjunath remembered on IIM-L campus

Lucknow: A candlelight march was organised at Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM-L) campus on Wednesday in memory of Manjunath Shanmugam, who was killed fighting against corruption on November 19, 2005. A bright alumnus of IIM-L, Manjunath was a manager with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) posted in Lakhimpur, where he was shot dead by a petrol pump owner and his henchmen for objecting to adulteration of oil.

IIM students addressed the gathering giving information about the trust and its activities. A minute’s silence was observed in Manjunath’s memory. Students then administered the pledge of integrity to the students and rendered the national anthem.

The Manjunath Shanmugam Trust (MST) — an initiative of business school alumni across the world who has joined hands to improve governance in Indian public life — fought the case relentlessly. After a record nine-month trial, all eight accused were found guilty, with the main accused given the death sentence and the remaining life imprisonment.

India’s first national RTI Act helpline was set up by MST in association with a noted NGO on November 19, 2006 to mark the first death anniversary of Manjunath.

January-2015 6 Super Student Monthly IIM Raipur gets a reactor tender

Lucknow: Rolling up their sleeves, management students battled against each other to come up with an idea to build an atomic reactor without taking loans and generate quick profits from it. After much deliberation, the government finally handed over the tender to a team from IIM Raipur.

This was, however, not a real tender process but one of the business events titled L&T-Finesse at IIM-Lucknow’s annual business and cultural fest Manfest-Varchasva. Giving it their best shot, B-schools from across the country competed for the reactor tender.

Battling the brightest of the country, six teams presented their financial and technical bid to put down their competitors. With less investment and minimum hard work, the budding managers made use of the latest technology that required minimum foreign intervention to come up with the best idea. Lobbying their idea strongly, the teams fought tooth and nail for the winner’s slot. For managing its financials well and working in tandem with the external environment, the team from IIM Raipur was adjudged the winner.

In the management event, ‘The Next CEO’, students were given a task to get themselves appointed in a company. Already under pressure, teams were asked to develop a strategy to work better. While the employer wanted to appoint people on low salary package, the job-seekers did not agree to the packages.

The event was endowed with foresight, functional expertise, confidence and the rare ability to make decisions under severe pressure.

External Credit - Sanjeev Newar, IIM Calcutta Alumnus CAT 2014: Tips to get through a Group Discussion in an impressive way

In continuation to our series of “How to say it best” from those who have made it to IIMs’ or one of the best B schools. We ask some of the IIMs’ students about how they prepared themselves for the most dreaded rounds after CAT scores- Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

To secure admission in your dream college for MBA. Aspirants are selected on the basis of consolidated percentile in CAT, Group discussion and Personal Interview. Group discussion in simple term means discussion among a group of people. The panel evaluates the candidates’ potential to work and manage the team along with his/her clarity of thoughts while communicating their opinions. A group of participants are made to discuss on a topic or subject for a limited time and then assessed accordingly. It is a chance for you to be more vocal.

January-2015 12 Super Student Monthly Prashant Khullar alumnus of SIMC, Pune (Finance) shared some handy tips that each and every aspirant must keep in mind while preparing them for Group Discussion round.

1. Entering the GD: Contrary to what many esteemed trainers say, one should only enter the GD when one has valid points. Being the first to do so, leaves a good impression on the evaluator. But take the move only if you have complete knowledge of the subject.

2. Rule of thumb: Enter before half of the group has spoken. But do not repeat a point, or be lengthy or irrelevant. Intervene, if someone else is going on an irrelevant track.

3. Be Expressive: Use quotes, facts and figures, statements, everyday life examples to express a clear chain of thoughts. Also it might leave a good impression on the examiner and help you score well.

4. Prepare your thoughts well: It is always good to enter the GD when there is silence. Do not just go on and on and on with only your opinionated view. Remember, it is a group discussion. Allow others to speak too. Using body language to show entry and exit is yet another important way.

Eg: Slightly lean forward when you plan to enter and return to normal position just as you end the point-this unconsciously gives your fellow aspirants cue to step in.

5.Strong Conclusions: Summaries should only have points already mentioned and a conclusion may have a short summary but needs to have point wise conclusions which the group has come to. Do not add new points which you might have missed, however good they may seem.

6. And lastly, aspirants can use idea generating codes. One of them is Pop Bean- People objects places behavior events actions names. It can help to think alternately and bring something new on the table.

These are some basic yet very important tips that will help any aspirant to feel a bit more confident in GD.

CENTRAL LOCATION IS ITS ADVANTAGE

Dance rehearsals for the New Year bash are going on in full swing as this time the residents of Venkojipalem plan to include fresh themes such as dance, fancy dress, and elocution competitions involving children. Residents say that its the way to celebrate special occasions in their apartment blocks. Combined celebrations are organised with a sense of belonging, and we share the responsibility, says N. Srinivas, a Central Government employee residing in the colony. Apart from the

January-2015 23 Super Student Monthly visible bonding over celebrations, what has drawn the residents closer to the locality is the accessibility to the neighbouring areas. “Be it Seetammadhara, MVP Colony, Hanumanthawaka, or Madhurawada, every place is close from this area. For children, commuting to schools is made much easier as the bus stop is just a few blocks away,” says V. Padmavathi, a resident. From one of the city’s oldest colonies with less traffic movement to the busiest hub that houses scores of people who have settled here, Venkojipalem has come a long way. Petty shops, a temple with a huge Hanuman idol, a burial ground, kirana stores, and Swami Gnanananda Ashram dot the colony. Some of the colony residents allege that slum-dwellers staying in the area are causing inconvenience in many ways. “They dump garbage opposite our apartment and refuse to put it in the dustbin. The overflowing garbage bins, a gedda (rainwater drain) that passes through the burial ground, and the open drainage system raise a stink in the colony,” say the residents. It is this aspect that has drawn many a resident to Venkojipalem

Hotel Novotel that is hosting three events — one indoor and two outdoor venues — has a backup plan in place in view of the inclement weather. “For the rooftop and poolside parties, we have made alternative arrangements to shift them indoors if it rains. The ‘Casino Royale’ event at V-Convention is being held in an indoor venue and the response has been very encouraging so far,” said Madhav Bellamkonda, General Manager of Novotel Hotel. The hotel has lined up events with Indian Idol finalist Ananya Mishra, Mexican vocalist

January-2015 24 Super Student Monthly Valeria Gracia, and live bands to make it a lively and memorable night. The New Year’s Eve party at Godavari Deck at The Gateway Hotel promises to take the evening to a different level with pulsating music, live entertainment, and an array of delectable snacks, cocktails, and buffet spread at Godavari Hall. The programme is being organised in coordination with Hampshire events. “The Godavari Deck, which is at an elevated level overlooking the sea, makes it an ideal venue to host the most special event of the year. We are closely monitoring the weather and in case it rains, we will shift the programmes to Godavari Hall,” said Souvik Bhattacharya, hotel’s General Manager. The Park is hosting a seaside party with the theme Hawaiian Night with South American and Columbian dancers, DJs, and a delightful buffet spread. There will be Salsa and Latino dance performances that will transform the beach into a dance floor. The hotel has also planned for fireworks show at midnight to ring in the New Year. High demand With all the four events at Hotel Four Points being held at indoor venues, the demand for passes has been high, according to hotel’s resident manager P.C. Rao. “Passes for Banquets event are sold out and we are optimistic of a good turnout at The Eatery, Waves, and Panache, where we have a special line-up of programmes,” Mr. Rao added.

In a statement, he said in most of the units in SEZs including APSEZ and Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City, Parawada, labour laws were not being implemented. He said safety guidelines were also going for a toss due to lack of supervision. Mr. Rao said the high power committee comprising experts and representatives from various trade unions should be asked to submit comprehensive recommendations on how to improve the situation in SEZ units. He said the management of Anjaneya Alloys Unit should give adequate compensation to the family of a worker who died and to 10 others who were injured in Sunday’s blast in one of the furnaces. According to him, two workers had lost their vision due to severe burns.

ONLINE CLASSROOM LAUNCHED FOR VISUALLY CHALLENGED

Vision Aid Charitable Services Society has launched a virtual online student stations for the visually challenged. The first two stations to be connected online are Seva Bharati School for Visually Challenged in Mangalore and Sushurta Eye Hospital in Kolkata. The online class room that is equipped with a camera and computer was inaugurated at Vision Aids centre at Ba Bapu Bhavan here on Monday by Director 26 January-2015 Super Student Monthly of Centre for Policy Studies A. Prasanna Kumar. Lauding the work as extraordinarily creative, and service of Vision Aid, he said 20 per cent of the urban slum dwellers suffer from vision impairment and it needed to be addressed. It extends the education via internet using the services of Gyaanmantra, a Delhi based call centre, says M.S. Raju, president of Vision Aid, an IITian from Kharagpur. Vision Aid runs the facility in collaboration with VAInc of USA of which his son Ramakrishna Raju is founder director. While the school is here, the student station can be anywhere and requires a computer fitted with a camera costing Rs.10,000. Of the amount Rs.5,000 is given as support by Vision Aid and it installs the equipment also. “It is extremely difficult for the vision impaired to lead their life and carry out daily routine. Hence, we have prepared orientation and mobility training manual and handbook for them,” elaborates Mr. Raju. Vision Aid also offers Administrators of Application for Vision Impaired to train B.Ed. and D.Ed. teachers. Mr. Raju says while the country turns out six lakh teachers every year only 600 are trained in handling visually challenged. If trained regular teachers can identify and help the visually impaired. The online facility can help train two lakh teachers. A 50-lesson certificate course will improve the employability of the visually impaired, says Mr. Raju.

January-2015 27 Super Student Monthly FOCUS ON SAFETY AUDIT AT INDUSTRIES

Though safety apparatus is being reviewed nothing is materialising Frequent industrial accidents notwithstanding the talk of safety audit have remained an empty rhetoric. It has become a normal practice to review the safety apparatus vis à vis the protocols being implemented for occupational safety and health whenever a major accident occurs but in practice nothing concrete is materialising, say trade union leaders. Another point for deplorable track record, some due to safety negligence and others due to pollution, is stated to be lack of supervisory mechanism for want of manpower by the AP Pollution Control Board, Factories, Fire and other concerned departments. Though there was a proposal to locate the headquarters of APPCB in the city due to location of several industrial units, there appears to be no serious move in this regard as yet. The death of one worker and injuries sustained by 10 others at Anjaneya Alloys Limited in a furnace blast at AP Special Economic Zone on Sunday is a case in point on the need for regulator safety audit. Some of the workers injured in the accident told Ministers Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu and CPI (M) team led by State Secretariat member Ch. Narsinga Rao that despite warning on water leakage no immediate action was taken to halt production. “It’s a matter of serious concern that there is no let-up in industrial accidents. We have to review the safety situation and conduct audit each industry- wise,” Mr. Srinivasa Rao said. Visakhapatnam has witnessed some of the worst industrial accidents. Two engineers of a private firm died following suspected gas leakage in June at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. Frequent gas leakages have been reported in some of the units at Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City, Parawada. Three workers died in fire at Hetero Drugs, Nakkapalli last year. While 19 died in an explosion at oxygen pressure reduction station of VSP on June 13, 2012, cooling tower collapse at HPCL Visakh Refinery claimed 27 lives on August 23, 2013. “All these accidents buttress our claim on deteriorating safety status of our industrial establishments mainly

January-2015 28 Super Student Monthly due to over-dependence on outsourcing and cost reduction,” said INTUC district president Mantri Rajasekhar.

DONT CROSS YOUR LIMITS POLICE TO REVELLERS

The city police have drawn up an elaborate plan with a number of restrictions to restrain the New Year revellers from going overboard and to maintain law and order during the celebration time. The Commissioner of Police incharge Atul Singh informed The Hindu that the celebration time, be it at the hotels or at any public places and clubs, will have to close by 1 a.m. Cautioning the tipsy drivers, he said that special mobile squads will be on the move from 8 p.m. onwards and drivers under the influence of alcohol will be taken to task. It is estimated that about 50 squads will be on the move to check drunken driving and about 1,300 police including a few armed squads will be on duty to restrain the revellers. Mr. Atul Singh also pointed out that party organisers should obtain prior permission from the police for hosting programmes and all programmes should be restricted between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. “The organisers should provide adequate security arrangement and will have to take up the responsibility of installing CC TV cameras at strategic points at the venue,” he said. Mr. Singh also pointed out that any kind of obscenity such as obscene dances and eve teasing will be strictly condemned and people will be taken to task. He cautioned that alcohol will not be served without obtaining special permission from the Excise Department. Beach road to remain closed The Beach Road will remain closed from Coastal Battery to VUDA Park for traffic from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. the next day. “We have seen a lot of accidents taking place on the Beach Road in the past and moreover, a large of number of people gather on the night. Closing the Beach Road is a precautionary measure. Even the GVMC flyover at Asilmetta will also remain closed during the same period,” he said. 50 mobile squads to check drunken driving

VEERAVARAM COMING BACK TO NORMAL: SP

Veeravaram, the native village of a spiritual leader Gemmela Sanjeeva Rao who was killed by the Maoists near Korukonda shandy in Visakha Agency on October 29 and his friends and relatives clobbered to death two Maoists in retaliation, is returning to normal, Superintendent of Police Koya Praveen said. The villagers vacated Veeravaram after being threatened by the Maoists who also warned them that they had identified 19 persons involved in the attack and would “try” them in the “Praja court”. “We are sending them (villagers) back to Veeravaram in batches…. presence of Maoists in the Agency was not much. They were seen at some places during the PLGA week (observed during early December)”, Dr. Praveen said during the year-end press conference. He said that CPI (Maoist) general secretary Ganapathi had not been present in the Andhra- Odisha border area in recent past. ‘SI surrendered’ On the surrender to the department of the Sub-Inspector in the case involving Payakaraopeta MLA V. Anitha, Dr. Praveen said the officer should have informed higher officials after he had booked the case. It was January-2015 30 Super Student Monthly embarrassing for him and others when the office of AP Assembly had sought details of the case booked against MLA, he said. A case was filed against Ms. Anitha for allegedly beating up a person. Ganja cases Huge quantity of ganja which was being cultivated in the Agency and smuggled to different places in the country had been seized during this year. But tracing the kingpins behind the illegal act was proving to be difficult since their link with those smuggling ganja could not be established. They were acting cleverly and persons engaged to transport ganja would know to take it from one point to another and they were not aware who was actually organising the whole operation, Dr. Praveen said. During this year, the Maoists had killed there persons and were involved in two cases of blasting and resorted to violence during the elections. Nine persons, including a professor of Andhra University, were arrested on the charge of having explosives or weapons with them or transporting them. Nine important underground Maoists were arrested and 19 others had surrendered. They were among 83 arrested and 82 surrendered persons.

BEACH EROSION MAY BE SEVERE THIS YEAR

Scores of visitors to R. K. Beach were in for a shock on Monday as they watched furious sea waves advancing towards the coast, menacingly licking the walls of the footpath along the beach road from Kursura Museum to R.K. Beach. This severely eroded beach stretch had been a constant reminder to the gruesome impact of cyclone Hudhud. The erosion activity, which normally occurs during this time of the year, is, however pronounced, threatening to cause a permanent damage to the beach. During the cyclone, vast quantities of sand had been deposited on the land from the beach leading to a severe loss of beach. But experts point out that seasonal erosion may have dealt a double blow to the beach stretch. Scientist in charge of the National Institute of Oceonography NIO V.S.N. Murty said coastal erosion was a common phenomenon but this time the erosion may have been more marked. During the northeast monsoon, sea erosion occurs. The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has tied up with two Chinese universities by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in a move to accelerate academic cooperation and student/faculty exchange between the varsities. The two Chinese Universities, Zhenjiang and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan have agreed to conduct exchange programs for students and educational partnerships. Commonly referred to as GTU, the Gujarat Technological University is a statewide institution affiliating many esteemed engineering, pharmacy, and management colleges and varsities across the western Indian Districts of Gujarat. To ensure more efficient, and systematic imparting of technical education the memorandum was inked on Wednesday. GTU registrar G P Vadodariya, according to newspaper reports said that the MoU has been signed to design an eight-week summer intern- ship programme between the universities where the students and faculty exchange can take place and joint research can be carried out. "We are also establishing a Chinese language centre at the GTU to assist stu- dents", he further added. GTU officials further explained that they are in talks for dual degree arrangement for which they will have to streamline the courses and specialization. The university had earlier entered into a MoU by joining hands with Sias International University at Xinzheng on November 28, 2013. As per official sources, four universities of Gujarat including GU, will sign MoUs with various Chinese universities for summer internships, research among other fields of academics in January 2015, during the Vibrant Gujarat summit. The vice-chancellor of GU, M N Patel was called for a meeting at the time of signing of the memorandum where he was asked by the state government to look into fields of academics which can be subjects for MoUs during the Vibrant Gujarat summit, said sources.

January-2015 40 Super Student Monthly JNU professor Priyadarshini Mukherjee con- ferred with China's top literary award

Bringing another laurel to the county, Jawaharlal National University's (JNU) professor Priyadarshini Mukherhee has bagged China's top most literary award - The Special Book Award. Mukherjee has written many books and has also done translations, but his main work, for which he was recognised for the award was his translation of the poetry of Mao Tse-Tung into Bengali, which was published in 2012.

Mukherjee, who has completed his higher education from JNU and had grown up on the campus of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, had a penchant for learning new languages since he was a young boy. His father, who taught at IIT, spoke several languages - French, Ger- man, Chinese and Russian among others - and Mukherjee picked up smatterings. As per sources, His CV on the JNU website lists over a dozen languages he knows well enough to read and write, as reported by a daily.

He said that when they started, China wasn't a big economic power. 1978-79 saw just the beginning of the reform that made it one. Their generation studied the language simply because they were passionate about it and that the focus has changed now as most of the students take jobs in MNCs right after graduation and that they haven't even caught up the language properly by then.

Mukherjee has also translated several works from Chinese to other languages and to Chinese as well. Many of his contemporary Chinese poems were translated from Chinese to Hindi. He covered various languages like Chinese and Spanish, which he did individually and sometimes with the help of other translators.
